5 Étant donc justifiés par la foi, nous avons la paix avec Dieu par notre Seigneur Jésus Christ,

2 à qui nous devons d'avoir eu par la foi accès à cette grâce, dans laquelle nous demeurons fermes, et nous nous glorifions dans l'espérance de la gloire de Dieu.

3 Bien plus, nous nous glorifions même des afflictions, sachant que l'affliction produit la persévérance,

4 la persévérance la victoire dans l'épreuve, et cette victoire l'espérance.

5 Or, l'espérance ne trompe point, parce que l'amour de Dieu est répandu dans nos coeurs par le Saint Esprit qui nous a été donné.

6 Car, lorsque nous étions encore sans force, Christ, au temps marqué, est mort pour des impies.

7 A peine mourrait-on pour un juste; quelqu'un peut-être mourrait-il pour un homme de bien.

8 Mais Dieu prouve son amour envers nous, en ce que, lorsque nous étions encore des pécheurs, Christ est mort pour nous.

9 A plus forte raison donc, maintenant que nous sommes justifiés par son sang, serons-nous sauvés par lui de la colère.

10 Car si, lorsque nous étions ennemis, nous avons été réconciliés avec Dieu par la mort de son Fils, à plus forte raison, étant réconciliés, serons-nous sauvés par sa vie.

11 Et non seulement cela, mais encore nous nous glorifions en Dieu par notre Seigneur Jésus Christ, par qui maintenant nous avons obtenu la réconciliation.

12 C'est pourquoi, comme par un seul homme le péché est entré dans le monde, et par le péché la mort, et qu'ainsi la mort s'est étendue sur tous les hommes, parce que tous ont péché,...

13 car jusqu'à la loi le péché était dans le monde. Or, le péché n'est pas imputé, quand il n'y a point de loi.

14 Cependant la mort a régné depuis Adam jusqu'à Moïse, même sur ceux qui n'avaient pas péché par une transgression semblable à celle d'Adam, lequel est la figure de celui qui devait venir.

15 Mais il n'en est pas du don gratuit comme de l'offense; car, si par l'offense d'un seul il en est beaucoup qui sont morts, à plus forte raison la grâce de Dieu et le don de la grâce venant d'un seul homme, Jésus Christ, ont-ils été abondamment répandus sur beaucoup.

16 Et il n'en est pas du don comme de ce qui est arrivé par un seul qui a péché; car c'est après une seule offense que le jugement est devenu condamnation, tandis que le don gratuit devient justification après plusieurs offenses.

17 Si par l'offense d'un seul la mort a régné par lui seul, à plus forte raison ceux qui reçoivent l'abondance de la grâce et du don de la justice régneront-ils dans la vie par Jésus Christ lui seul.

18 Ainsi donc, comme par une seule offense la condamnation a atteint tous les hommes, de même par un seul acte de justice la justification qui donne la vie s'étend à tous les hommes.

19 Car, comme par la désobéissance d'un seul homme beaucoup ont été rendus pécheurs, de même par l'obéissance d'un seul beaucoup seront rendus justes.

20 Or, la loi est intervenue pour que l'offense abondât, mais là où le péché a abondé, la grâce a surabondé,

21 afin que, comme le péché a régné par la mort, ainsi la grâce régnât par la justice pour la vie éternelle, par Jésus Christ notre Seigneur.

Results of Justification by Faith

5 (A)Therefore, having been justified by faith, [a](B)we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have (C)obtained our introduction by faith into this grace (D)in which we stand; and [b]we boast in hope of the glory of God. 3 (E)And not only this, but [c]we also (F)boast in our afflictions, knowing that affliction brings about (G)perseverance; 4 and (H)perseverance, (I)proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope (J)does not put to shame, because the love of God has been (K)poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

6 For while we were still (L)weak, (M)at the right time (N)Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man, [d]though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God (O)demonstrates (P)His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, (Q)Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified [e](R)by His blood, we shall be saved (S)from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were (T)enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved [f](U)by His life. 11 (V)And not only this, [g]but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received (W)the reconciliation.

The Gift of Righteousness in Christ

12 Therefore, just as through (X)one man sin entered into the world, and (Y)death through sin, and (Z)so death spread to all men, because all sinned— 13 for [h]until the Law sin was in the world, but (AA)sin is not imputed when there is no law. 14 Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned (AB)in the likeness of the trespass of Adam, who is a [i](AC)type of Him who was to come.

15 But [j]the gracious gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of (AD)the one (AE)the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by (AF)the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many. 16 And the gift is not like that which came through the one who sinned; for on the one hand (AG)the judgment arose from one transgression [k]resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the gracious gift arose from many transgressions [l]resulting in justification. 17 For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned (AH)through the one, much more those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will (AI)reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

18 So then as through (AJ)one transgression [m]there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one (AK)act of righteousness [n]there resulted (AL)justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man’s disobedience (AM)the many (AN)were appointed sinners, even so through (AO)the obedience of the One (AP)the many will be appointed righteous. 20 Now [o](AQ)the Law came in so that the transgression would increase, but where sin increased, (AR)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, as (AS)sin reigned in death, even so (AT)grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Peace and Hope

5 Therefore, since we have been justified(A) through faith,(B) we[a] have peace(C) with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,(D) 2 through whom we have gained access(E) by faith into this grace in which we now stand.(F) And we[b] boast in the hope(G) of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we[c] also glory in our sufferings,(H) because we know that suffering produces perseverance;(I) 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope(J) does not put us to shame, because God’s love(K) has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit,(L) who has been given to us.

6 You see, at just the right time,(M) when we were still powerless,(N) Christ died for the ungodly.(O) 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.(P)

9 Since we have now been justified(Q) by his blood,(R) how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath(S) through him! 10 For if, while we were God’s enemies,(T) we were reconciled(U) to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!(V) 11 Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.(W)

Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,(X) and death through sin,(Y) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned(Z)—

13 To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.(AA) 14 Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,(AB) who is a pattern of the one to come.(AC)

15 But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,(AD) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,(AE) overflow to the many! 16 Nor can the gift of God be compared with the result of one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death(AF) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life(AG) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,(AH) so also one righteous act resulted in justification(AI) and life(AJ) for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man(AK) the many were made sinners,(AL) so also through the obedience(AM) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

20 The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.(AN) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,(AO) 21 so that, just as sin reigned in death,(AP) so also grace(AQ) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life(AR) through Jesus Christ our Lord.
