Sự Phán Xét Công Chính Của Chúa
2 Vậy, hỡi ngươi là người lên án người khác, ngươi không làm sao bào chữa được, bởi khi ngươi lên án người khác là ngươi lên án chính mình vì ngươi làm chính những điều ngươi lên án. 2 Vì chúng ta biết rằng Đức Chúa Trời theo chân lý phán xét người làm những việc như thế. 3 Hỡi người, ngươi làm chính điều mà khi người khác làm thì ngươi lên án, ngươi tưởng mình sẽ thoát được sự phán xét của Đức Chúa Trời sao? 4 Hay ngươi khinh thường lòng đầy nhân từ, khoan dung và nhẫn nại của Ngài mà không nhận biết rằng sự nhân từ của Đức Chúa Trời là để dẫn ngươi đến hối cải sao?
5 Nhưng cứ theo lòng chai lì và không hối cải của ngươi, ngươi tích trữ cho mình thịnh nộ vào ngày thịnh nộ, là ngày sự đoán xét công bình của Đức Chúa Trời sẽ bày tỏ. 6 Ngài là Đấng báo ứng từng người tùy theo việc họ làm. 7 Một mặt Ngài ban sự sống vĩnh phúc cho những ai kiên tâm làm lành, tìm kiếm vinh quang, danh dự và sự bất diệt. 8 Mặt khác đối với những kẻ vì tham vọng ích kỷ, không vâng phục chân lý nhưng chạy theo sự bất chính thì Ngài dành cho thịnh nộ và giận dữ. 9 Ngài giáng hoạn nạn và khốn khổ trên mọi kẻ làm ác, trước là người Do Thái, sau là người Hy Lạp, 10 nhưng ban vinh quang, danh dự và bình an cho mọi người làm lành, trước là người Do Thái, sau là người Hy Lạp. 11 Bởi Đức Chúa Trời không thiên vị ai.
12 Vì những ai không có Kinh Luật mà phạm tội thì cũng sẽ không Kinh Luật mà hư mất; còn ai có Kinh Luật mà phạm tội thì sẽ bị xét đoán theo Kinh Luật. 13 Vì không phải hễ nghe suông Kinh Luật là trở thành công chính trước mặt Đức Chúa Trời nhưng ai tuân giữ Kinh Luật mới được xưng công chính. 14 Vì khi người ngoại quốc không có Kinh Luật mà tự nhiên làm những điều Kinh Luật dạy, dù không có Kinh Luật thì đó cũng là Kinh Luật cho họ rồi. 15 Họ tỏ ra rằng những điều Kinh Luật đòi hỏi đã được ghi trong lòng họ, lương tâm họ cũng chứng thực như thế, và tư tưởng họ tranh biện nhau khi thì lên án, khi thì bênh vực 16 vào ngày mà Đức Chúa Trời, bởi Chúa Cứu Thế Giê-su phán xét những điều kín giấu của loài người y theo Phúc Âm của tôi.
Người Do Thái Và Kinh Luật
17 Nhưng nếu ngươi tự đắc mình là dòng giống Do Thái, ỉ lại vào Kinh Luật và khoe mình trong Đức Chúa Trời, 18 hiểu biết ý chỉ Chúa cùng thẩm định được những điều tốt lành, nhờ được giáo huấn trong Kinh Luật, 19 tự thị là người dẫn đường kẻ mù, là ánh sáng cho những người ở trong tối tăm, 20 là người giáo hóa kẻ ngu, là thầy dạy cho những người ấu trĩ, vì trong Kinh Luật ngươi có được hiện thân của tri thức và chân lý. 21 Vậy, ngươi dạy người khác mà sao không dạy chính mình? Ngươi giảng đừng trộm cắp mà sao ngươi lại trộm cắp? 22 Ngươi bảo đừng ngoại tình sao ngươi lại ngoại tình? Ngươi gớm ghét hình tượng sao ngươi lại cướp các đền miếu? 23 Ngươi khoe mình trong Kinh Luật, mà lại phạm pháp, làm nhục Đức Chúa Trời? 24 Như Kinh Thánh chép: “Các ngươi đã làm cho Danh Đức Chúa Trời bị xúc phạm giữa dân ngoại quốc.”[a]
25 Thật vậy, sự cắt bì của ngươi chỉ thật có giá trị nếu ngươi thực hành Kinh Luật, nhưng nếu ngươi vi phạm Kinh Luật thì sự cắt bì của ngươi trở thành như không cắt bì. 26 Vì thế nếu người không cắt bì mà giữ giới răn của Kinh Luật thì người đó sẽ chẳng được kể như đã chịu cắt bì rồi sao? 27 Và những người thể xác không cắt bì nhưng tuân giữ Kinh Luật sẽ đoán xét ngươi là kẻ có Kinh Luật[b] và chịu cắt bì mà vi phạm Kinh Luật. 28 Vì không phải người Do Thái bề ngoài là người Do Thái thật, cũng không phải cắt bì phần xác bên ngoài là cắt bì thật. 29 Nhưng người Do Thái thật là người Do Thái bề trong và cắt bì thật là cắt bì trong lòng, bởi Thánh Linh chứ không phải bởi văn tự. Người như thế thì được khen không phải từ người ta mà từ Đức Chúa Trời.

2 O homme, qui que tu sois, toi qui juges, tu es donc inexcusable; car, en jugeant les autres, tu te condamnes toi-même, puisque toi qui juges, tu fais les mêmes choses.
2 Nous savons, en effet, que le jugement de Dieu contre ceux qui commettent de telles choses est selon la vérité.
3 Et penses-tu, ô homme, qui juges ceux qui commettent de telles choses, et qui les fais, que tu échapperas au jugement de Dieu?
4 Ou méprises-tu les richesses de sa bonté, de sa patience et de sa longanimité, ne reconnaissant pas que la bonté de Dieu te pousse à la repentance?
5 Mais, par ton endurcissement et par ton coeur impénitent, tu t'amasses un trésor de colère pour le jour de la colère et de la manifestation du juste jugement de Dieu,
6 qui rendra à chacun selon ses oeuvres;
7 réservant la vie éternelle à ceux qui, par la persévérance à bien faire, cherchent l'honneur, la gloire et l'immortalité;
8 mais l'irritation et la colère à ceux qui, par esprit de dispute, sont rebelles à la vérité et obéissent à l'injustice.
9 Tribulation et angoisse sur toute âme d'homme qui fait le mal, sur le Juif premièrement, puis sur le Grec!
10 Gloire, honneur et paix pour quiconque fait le bien, pour le Juif premièrement, puis pour le Grec!
11 Car devant Dieu il n'y a point d'acception de personnes.
12 Tous ceux qui ont péché sans la loi périront aussi sans la loi, et tous ceux qui ont péché avec la loi seront jugés par la loi.
13 Ce ne sont pas, en effet, ceux qui écoutent la loi qui sont justes devant Dieu, mais ce sont ceux qui la mettent en pratique qui seront justifiés.
14 Quand les païens, qui n'ont point la loi, font naturellement ce que prescrit la loi, ils sont, eux qui n'ont point la loi, une loi pour eux-mêmes;
15 ils montrent que l'oeuvre de la loi est écrite dans leurs coeurs, leur conscience en rendant témoignage, et leurs pensées s'accusant ou se défendant tour à tour.
16 C'est ce qui paraîtra au jour où, selon mon Évangile, Dieu jugera par Jésus Christ les actions secrètes des hommes.
17 Toi qui te donnes le nom de Juif, qui te reposes sur la loi, qui te glorifies de Dieu,
18 qui connais sa volonté, qui apprécies la différence des choses, étant instruit par la loi;
19 toi qui te flattes d'être le conducteur des aveugles, la lumière de ceux qui sont dans les ténèbres,
20 le docteur des insensés, le maître des ignorants, parce que tu as dans la loi la règle de la science et de la vérité;
21 toi donc, qui enseignes les autres, tu ne t'enseignes pas toi-même! Toi qui prêches de ne pas dérober, tu dérobes!
22 Toi qui dis de ne pas commettre d'adultère, tu commets l'adultère! Toi qui as en abomination les idoles, tu commets des sacrilèges!
23 Toi qui te fais une gloire de la loi, tu déshonores Dieu par la transgression de la loi!
24 Car le nom de Dieu est à cause de vous blasphémé parmi les païens, comme cela est écrit.
25 La circoncision est utile, si tu mets en pratique la loi; mais si tu transgresses la loi, ta circoncision devient incirconcision.
26 Si donc l'incirconcis observe les ordonnances de la loi, son incirconcision ne sera-t-elle pas tenue pour circoncision?
27 L'incirconcis de nature, qui accomplit la loi, ne te condamnera-t-il pas, toi qui la transgresses, tout en ayant la lettre de la loi et la circoncision?
28 Le Juif, ce n'est pas celui qui en a les dehors; et la circoncision, ce n'est pas celle qui est visible dans la chair.
29 Mais le Juif, c'est celui qui l'est intérieurement; et la circoncision, c'est celle du coeur, selon l'esprit et non selon la lettre. La louange de ce Juif ne vient pas des hommes, mais de Dieu.

God’s Righteous Judgment
2 You, therefore, have no excuse,(A) you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.(B) 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches(C) of his kindness,(D) forbearance(E) and patience,(F) not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?(G)
5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath(H), when his righteous judgment(I) will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a](J) 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor(K) and immortality,(L) he will give eternal life.(M) 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil,(N) there will be wrath and anger.(O) 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil:(P) first for the Jew, then for the Gentile;(Q) 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.(R) 11 For God does not show favoritism.(S)
12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law(T) will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey(U) the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law,(V) they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets(W) through Jesus Christ,(X) as my gospel(Y) declares.
The Jews and the Law
17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God;(Z) 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal?(AA) 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?(AB) 23 You who boast in the law,(AC) do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”[b](AD)
25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law,(AE) but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.(AF) 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements,(AG) will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised?(AH) 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you(AI) who, even though you have the[c] written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.
28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly,(AJ) nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.(AK) 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart,(AL) by the Spirit,(AM) not by the written code.(AN) Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.(AO)

God’s Judgment of Sin
2 You may think you can condemn such people, but you are just as bad, and you have no excuse! When you say they are wicked and should be punished, you are condemning yourself, for you who judge others do these very same things. 2 And we know that God, in his justice, will punish anyone who does such things. 3 Since you judge others for doing these things, why do you think you can avoid God’s judgment when you do the same things? 4 Don’t you see how wonderfully kind, tolerant, and patient God is with you? Does this mean nothing to you? Can’t you see that his kindness is intended to turn you from your sin?
5 But because you are stubborn and refuse to turn from your sin, you are storing up terrible punishment for yourself. For a day of anger is coming, when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 He will judge everyone according to what they have done. 7 He will give eternal life to those who keep on doing good, seeking after the glory and honor and immortality that God offers. 8 But he will pour out his anger and wrath on those who live for themselves, who refuse to obey the truth and instead live lives of wickedness. 9 There will be trouble and calamity for everyone who keeps on doing what is evil—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile.[a] 10 But there will be glory and honor and peace from God for all who do good—for the Jew first and also for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.
12 When the Gentiles sin, they will be destroyed, even though they never had God’s written law. And the Jews, who do have God’s law, will be judged by that law when they fail to obey it. 13 For merely listening to the law doesn’t make us right with God. It is obeying the law that makes us right in his sight. 14 Even Gentiles, who do not have God’s written law, show that they know his law when they instinctively obey it, even without having heard it. 15 They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right. 16 And this is the message I proclaim—that the day is coming when God, through Christ Jesus, will judge everyone’s secret life.
The Jews and the Law
17 You who call yourselves Jews are relying on God’s law, and you boast about your special relationship with him. 18 You know what he wants; you know what is right because you have been taught his law. 19 You are convinced that you are a guide for the blind and a light for people who are lost in darkness. 20 You think you can instruct the ignorant and teach children the ways of God. For you are certain that God’s law gives you complete knowledge and truth.
21 Well then, if you teach others, why don’t you teach yourself? You tell others not to steal, but do you steal? 22 You say it is wrong to commit adultery, but do you commit adultery? You condemn idolatry, but do you use items stolen from pagan temples?[b] 23 You are so proud of knowing the law, but you dishonor God by breaking it. 24 No wonder the Scriptures say, “The Gentiles blaspheme the name of God because of you.”[c]
25 The Jewish ceremony of circumcision has value only if you obey God’s law. But if you don’t obey God’s law, you are no better off than an uncircumcised Gentile. 26 And if the Gentiles obey God’s law, won’t God declare them to be his own people? 27 In fact, uncircumcised Gentiles who keep God’s law will condemn you Jews who are circumcised and possess God’s law but don’t obey it.
28 For you are not a true Jew just because you were born of Jewish parents or because you have gone through the ceremony of circumcision. 29 No, a true Jew is one whose heart is right with God. And true circumcision is not merely obeying the letter of the law; rather, it is a change of heart produced by the Spirit. And a person with a changed heart seeks praise[d] from God, not from people.
