¹⁷ As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.^(A)

²⁰ Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.^(A)

⁸ What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing^(A) Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ^{(B) 9} and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,^(C) but that which is through faith in^[a] Christ—the righteousness^(D) that comes from God on the basis of faith.^(E)

¹⁸ For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.^[a](A) For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

⁵ Or do you think Scripture says without reason that he jealously longs for the spirit he has caused to dwell in us^[a]?^{(A) 6} But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says:

¹² For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has,^(A) not according to what one does not have.

²³ but I see another law at work in me, waging war^(A) against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin^(B) at work within me.
