²⁰ Moreover ^(A)the law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace ^(B)abounded much more,

³ For ^(A)we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. ⁴ But when ^(B)the kindness and the love of ^(C)God our Savior toward man appeared, ^5 (D)not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through ^(E)the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, ^6 (F)whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ that having been justified by His grace ^(G)we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Dead to Sin, Alive to God

6 What shall we say then? ^(A)Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?

¹⁴ For ^(A)sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.

Purpose of the Law

¹⁹ What purpose then does the law serve? ^(A)It was added because of transgressions, till the ^(B)Seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ^(C)appointed through angels by the hand ^(D)of a mediator. ²⁰ Now a mediator does not mediate for one only, ^(E)but God is one.

²¹ Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. ²² But the Scripture has confined ^(F)all under sin, ^(G)that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. ²³ But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, ^[a]kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. ²⁴ Therefore ^(H)the law was our ^[b]tutor to bring us to Christ, ^(I)that we might be justified by faith. ²⁵ But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.

¹⁵ because ^(A)the law brings about wrath; for where there is no law there is no transgression.

By Grace Through Faith

2 And ^(A)you He made alive, ^(B)who were dead in trespasses and sins, ^2 (C)in which you once walked according to the ^[a]course of this world, according to ^(D)the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in ^(E)the sons of disobedience, ^3 (F)among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in ^(G)the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and ^(H)were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.

⁴ But God, ^(I)who is rich in mercy, because of His ^(J)great love with which He loved us, ^5 (K)even when we were dead in trespasses, ^(L)made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),

¹⁹ Now we know that whatever ^(A)the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that ^(B)every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become ^[a]guilty before God. ²⁰ Therefore ^(C)by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
