¹³ To be sure, sin was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not charged against anyone’s account where there is no law.^(A)

¹⁵ because the law brings wrath.^(A) And where there is no law there is no transgression.^(B)

⁵⁶ The sting of death is sin,^(A) and the power of sin is the law.^(B)

⁷ But Er, Judah’s firstborn, was wicked in the Lord’s sight;^(A) so the Lord put him to death.^(B)

³⁶ So both of Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.^(A)

³² Let’s get our father to drink wine and then sleep with him and preserve our family line^(A) through our father.”^(B)

⁴ Before they had gone to bed, all the men from every part of the city of Sodom^(A)—both young and old—surrounded the house.

²⁰ Then the Lord said, “The outcry against Sodom^(A) and Gomorrah is so great^(B) and their sin so grievous^(C)

¹³ Now the people of Sodom^(A) were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.^(B)

²¹ The Lord smelled the pleasing aroma^(A) and said in his heart: “Never again will I curse the ground^(B) because of humans, even though^[a] every inclination of the human heart is evil from childhood.^(C) And never again will I destroy^(D) all living creatures,^(E) as I have done.
