Death Through Adam, Life Through Christ

¹² Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man,^(A) and death through sin,^(B) and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned^(C)—

¹⁵ But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man,^(A) how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ,^(B) overflow to the many!

¹⁷ For if, by the trespass of the one man, death^(A) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life^(B) through the one man, Jesus Christ!

¹⁸ Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people,^(C) so also one righteous act resulted in justification^(D) and life^(E) for all people. ¹⁹ For just as through the disobedience of the one man^(F) the many were made sinners,^(G) so also through the obedience^(H) of the one man the many will be made righteous.

²⁰ The law was brought in so that the trespass might increase.^(I) But where sin increased, grace increased all the more,^{(J) 21} so that, just as sin reigned in death,^(K) so also grace^(L) might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life^(M) through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Watchfulness^(A)(B)

³⁵ “Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, ³⁶ like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. ³⁷ It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes.^(C) Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them.^{(D) 38} It will be good for those servants whose master finds them ready, even if he comes in the middle of the night or toward daybreak.
