⁵ However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.^(A)

⁹ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law,^(A) but that which is through faith in^[a] Christ—the righteousness^(B) that comes from God on the basis of faith.^(C)

²² This righteousness^(A) is given through faith^(B) in^[a] Jesus Christ^(C) to all who believe.^(D) There is no difference between Jew and Gentile,^(E)

³ At one time^(A) we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. ⁴ But when the kindness^(B) and love of God our Savior^(C) appeared,^{(D) 5} he saved us,^(E) not because of righteous things we had done,^(F) but because of his mercy.^(G) He saved us through the washing^(H) of rebirth and renewal^(I) by the Holy Spirit, ⁶ whom he poured out on us^(J) generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷ so that, having been justified by his grace,^(K) we might become heirs^(L) having the hope^(M) of eternal life.^(N)

⁸ Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.”^{[a](A) 9} So those who rely on faith^(B) are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.^(C)

¹⁰ For all who rely on the works of the law^(D) are under a curse,^(E) as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.”^{[b](F) 11} Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God,^(G) because “the righteous will live by faith.”^{[c](H) 12} The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.”^{[d](I) 13} Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law^(J) by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.”^{[e](K) 14} He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus,^(L) so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.^(M)

⁹ If you declare^(A) with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”^(B) and believe^(C) in your heart that God raised him from the dead,^(D) you will be saved.^{(E) 10} For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

¹⁶ know that a person is not justified by the works of the law,^(A) but by faith in Jesus Christ.^(B) So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in^[a] Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.^(C)

¹⁷ “But if, in seeking to be justified in Christ, we Jews find ourselves also among the sinners,^(D) doesn’t that mean that Christ promotes sin? Absolutely not!^(E)

³ Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness.^(A)

⁹ Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God?^(A) Do not be deceived:^(B) Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers^(C) nor men who have sex with men^{[a](D) 10} nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers^(E) will inherit the kingdom of God. ¹¹ And that is what some of you were.^(F) But you were washed,^(G) you were sanctified,^(H) you were justified^(I) in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
