¹⁷ as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”), in the presence of the God in whom he believed,^[a] who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.^(A)

²⁸ God chose what is low and despised in the world, things that are not, to abolish things that are,

⁴ “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations.^{(A) 5} No longer shall your name be Abram,^[a] but your name shall be Abraham,^[b] for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations.^(B)

²¹ Indeed, just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wishes.^(A)

²⁹ For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family.^{[a](A) 30} And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.^(B)

⁶³ It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

From Death to Life

2 You were dead through the trespasses and sins ² in which you once walked, following the course of this world,^[a] following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient.^{[b](A) 3} All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, doing the will of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else,^{(B) 4} but God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us^{(C) 5} even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ^[c]—by grace you have been saved—

¹¹ If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus^[a] from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through^[b] his Spirit that dwells in you.^(A)
