^14 (A)For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.

⁹ and be found in him, not having ^(A)a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but ^(B)that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith—

¹⁸ For if the inheritance comes by the law, it no longer comes by promise; but ^(A)God gave it to Abraham by a promise.

¹⁹ Why then the law? ^(B)It was added because of transgressions, ^(C)until the offspring should come to whom the promise had been made, and it was ^(D)put in place through angels ^(E)by an intermediary. ²⁰ Now ^(F)an intermediary implies more than one, but ^(G)God is one.

²¹ Is the law then contrary to the promises of God? Certainly not! For ^(H)if a law had been given that could give life, then righteousness would indeed be by the law. ²² But the Scripture ^(I)imprisoned everything under sin, so that ^(J)the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given ^(K)to those who believe.

²³ Now before faith came, we were held captive under the law, ^(L)imprisoned until the coming faith would be revealed. ²⁴ So then, ^(M)the law was our ^(N)guardian until Christ came, ^(O)in order that we might be justified by faith.

²⁸ For the law appoints men ^(A)in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made ^(B)perfect forever.

¹⁹ (for ^(A)the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, ^(B)a better hope is introduced, through which ^(C)we draw near to God.

²¹ I do not nullify the grace of God, for ^(A)if righteousness^[a] were through the law, ^(B)then Christ died for no purpose.

¹⁶ That is why it depends on faith, ^(A)in order that the promise may rest on grace and ^(B)be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, ^(C)who is the father of us all,

³¹ Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
