⁷ What then? Israel has not achieved what it was pursuing. The elect have achieved it, but the rest were hardened,^(A)

⁴ In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing clearly the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.^(A)

¹⁸ So then he has mercy on whomever he chooses, and he hardens the heart of whomever he chooses.

All Israel Will Be Saved

²⁵ I want you to understand this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not claim to be wiser than you are: a hardening has come upon part of Israel until the full number of the gentiles has come in.^(A)

⁵ So, too, at the present time there is a remnant chosen by grace.

¹⁰ and every kind of wicked deception for those who are perishing because they refused to love the truth and so be saved.^{(A) 11} For this reason God sends them a powerful delusion, leading them to believe what is false,^{(B) 12} so that all who have not believed the truth but took pleasure in unrighteousness will be condemned.^(C)

Chosen for Salvation

¹³ But we must always give thanks to God for you, brothers and sisters beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the first fruits^[a] for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth.^{(D) 14} For this purpose he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.^(E)

³¹ but Israel, who did strive for the law of righteousness, did not attain that law.^{(A) 32} Why not? Because they did not strive for it on the basis of faith but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,^(B)

⁴ just as he chose us in Christ^[a] before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.^(A)

¹⁴ But their minds were hardened. Indeed, to this very day, when they hear the reading of the old covenant, the same veil is still there; it is not unveiled since in Christ it is set aside.^(A)

²³ and what if he has done so in order to make known the riches of his glory for the objects of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory—
