⁴ For if God did not spare angels when they sinned,^(A) but sent them to hell,^[a] putting them in chains of darkness^[b] to be held for judgment;^(B)

⁸ as it is written:

²¹ For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.^(A)

⁶⁴ Then the Lord will scatter^(A) you among all nations,^(B) from one end of the earth to the other.^(C) There you will worship other gods—gods of wood and stone, which neither you nor your ancestors have known.^{(D) 65} Among those nations you will find no repose, no resting place^(E) for the sole of your foot. There the Lord will give you an anxious mind, eyes^(F) weary with longing, and a despairing heart.^{(G) 66} You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life. ⁶⁷ In the morning you will say, “If only it were evening!” and in the evening, “If only it were morning!”—because of the terror that will fill your hearts and the sights that your eyes will see.^{(H) 68} The Lord will send you back in ships to Egypt on a journey I said you should never make again.^(I) There you will offer yourselves for sale to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.

¹³ They are wild waves of the sea,^(A) foaming up their shame;^(B) wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.^(C)

⁶ And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.^(A)

¹⁷ These people are springs without water^(A) and mists driven by a storm. Blackest darkness is reserved for them.^(B)
