¹⁴ Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam,^(A) who is a pattern of the one to come.^(B)

⁴⁵ So it is written: “The first man Adam became a living being”^[a];^(A) the last Adam,^(B) a life-giving spirit.^(C)

²² We know that the whole creation has been groaning^(A) as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

²⁰ For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,^(A) in hope

¹⁷ For if, by the trespass of the one man, death^(A) reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life^(B) through the one man, Jesus Christ!
