Gaäl komt in opstand tegen Abimelech

22 Toen Abimelech drie jaar over Israël had geregeerd, 23 zorgde God ervoor dat er moeilijkheden ontstonden tussen Abimelech en de bewoners van Sichem. Daardoor werden de bewoners van Sichem ontrouw aan Abimelech. 24 Zo wilde God Abimelech straffen voor de moord op zijn broers, de 70 zonen van Gideon. En Hij wilde de bewoners van Sichem ervoor straffen dat zij hem daarbij hadden geholpen.

22,23 Nadat Abimelech drie jaar over Israël had geregeerd, stuurde God een boze geest die moeilijkheden veroorzaakte tussen Abimelech en de burgers van Sichem, waardoor zij hem ontrouw werden. 24 Tijdens de gebeurtenissen die volgden, kregen zowel Abimelech als de burgers van Sichem, die samen met hem de zeventig zonen van Gideon hadden vermoord, voor deze bloedschuld hun verdiende loon.

22 After Abimelek had governed Israel three years, 23 God stirred up animosity(A) between Abimelek and the citizens of Shechem so that they acted treacherously against Abimelek. 24 God did this in order that the crime against Jerub-Baal’s seventy sons,(B) the shedding(C) of their blood, might be avenged(D) on their brother Abimelek and on the citizens of Shechem, who had helped him(E) murder his brothers.

23 Then God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech:

24 That the cruelty done to the threescore and ten sons of Jerubbaal might come, and their blood be laid upon Abimelech their brother, which slew them; and upon the men of Shechem, which aided him in the killing of his brethren.

Downfall of Abimelech
