Debora
4 Nadat Ehud was gestorven, werden de Israëlieten opnieuw ongehoorzaam aan de Heer. Ze leefden niet meer zoals Hij het wilde. 2 Daarom gaf de Heer hen in de macht van koning Jabin van Kanaän, die in Hazor woonde. Zijn legeraanvoerder heette Sisera. Sisera woonde in Haroset. 3 De Israëlieten begonnen de Heer om hulp te roepen, want Jabin was erg machtig: hij had 900 ijzeren strijdwagens. Al 20 jaar lang had hij Israël wreed verdrukt.
4 In die tijd was de profetes Debora, de vrouw van Lappidot, leider van Israël. 5 Ze was rechter. Ze woonde bij de 'palm van Debora'. Die staat tussen Rama en Bet-El, in de bergen van Efraïm. De Israëlieten kwamen daar naar haar toe met hun rechtszaken.
6 Op een keer liet ze Barak roepen. Hij was de zoon van Abinoam uit Kedes. Kedes ligt in het gebied van de stam van Naftali. Ze zei tegen hem: "De Heer, de God van Israël, beveelt jou: 'Ga naar de berg Tabor met een leger van 10.000 mannen uit de stammen van Naftali en Zebulon. 7 Dan zal Ik ervoor zorgen dat Sisera, de legeraanvoerder van Jabin, met zijn strijdwagens en zijn troepen naar jullie toe komt bij de beek Kison. Ik zal jullie de overwinning geven.' " 8 Maar Barak zei tegen haar: "Ik ga alleen als jij meegaat. Anders ga ik niet." 9 Ze zei: "Ik zal met je meegaan. Maar jij zal niet de eer krijgen voor deze overwinning. Want de Heer zal Sisera laten doden door een vrouw." Toen ging Debora met Barak naar Kedes.
Barak verslaat de Kanaänieten
10 Barak riep 10.000 mannen van de stammen van Zebulon en Naftali bij Kedes bij elkaar. Ook Debora ging met hen mee. 11 In de buurt van Kedes woonde een Keniet, die Heber heette. Hij woonde niet bij de andere Kenieten. (De Kenieten waren familie van Mozes' vrouw.)[a] Hij had zijn tenten opgezet bij de eikenboom van Zaänaïm, dat bij Kedes ligt.
12 Sisera hoorde dat Barak, de zoon van Abinoam, de berg Tabor had bezet. 13 Toen trok Sisera met al zijn 900 strijdwagens naar de beek Kison. Ook nam hij het hele leger mee dat bij hem in Haroset was. 14 Debora zei tegen Barak: "Ga, want vandaag zal de Heer Sisera in je macht geven. Want de Heer is voor je uit gegaan." Barak kwam met zijn 10.000 mannen de berg Tabor af. 15 En de Heer zorgde ervoor dat Sisera met al zijn strijdwagens en zijn hele leger voor Barak moest vluchten. Sisera sprong van zijn strijdwagen en vluchtte te voet. 16 Barak achtervolgde de strijdwagens en het leger tot aan Haroset. Het hele leger van Sisera werd gedood. Niemand bleef in leven.
Aanvoerder Sisera wordt gedood
17 Maar Sisera vluchtte te voet naar de tent van Jaël, de vrouw van de Keniet Heber. Want koning Jabin van Hazor en de familie van Heber waren met elkaar bevriend. 18 Jaël kwam naar buiten, Sisera tegemoet. Ze zei: "Kom gauw binnen, heer, verberg u hier. U hoeft niet bang te zijn." Hij ging met Jaël de tent in. Daar verborg ze hem onder een deken. 19 Hij zei tegen haar: "Geef me alsjeblieft wat water te drinken. Ik heb dorst." Ze gaf hem te drinken uit een zak met melk. Daarna legde ze de deken weer over hem heen. 20 Hij zei tegen haar: "Ga bij de ingang van de tent staan. Als er iemand komt vragen of hier iemand is, dan zeg je: 'Nee, niemand.' " 21 Hij was zó uitgeput, dat hij in slaap viel. Toen pakte Jaël een tentpin en een hamer. Ze sloop naar hem toe en sloeg de pin door de zijkant van zijn schedel. De pin ging dwars door zijn hoofd de grond in. Zo doodde ze Sisera.
22 Toen zag ze Barak aankomen, op zoek naar Sisera. Jaël liep naar hem toe en zei tegen hem: "Kom, ik zal je de man laten zien die je zoekt." Hij ging met haar de tent in. Daar zag hij Sisera dood op de grond liggen, met de pin door zijn hoofd. 23 Zo versloeg God op die dag koning Jabin van Kanaän voor de Israëlieten. 24 En de Israëlieten maakten het koning Jabin steeds moeilijker, totdat ze hem helemaal verslagen hadden.

4 (A)And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died. 2 And the Lord (B)sold them into the hand of (C)Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in (D)Hazor. The commander of his army was (E)Sisera, who lived in (F)Harosheth-hagoyim. 3 Then the people of Israel (G)cried out to the Lord for help, for he had (H)900 chariots of iron and he oppressed the people of Israel cruelly for twenty years.
4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 She used to sit under the palm of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in (I)the hill country of Ephraim, and the people of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 She sent and summoned (J)Barak the son of Abinoam from (K)Kedesh-naphtali and said to him, “Has not the Lord, the God of Israel, commanded you, ‘Go, gather your men at Mount (L)Tabor, taking 10,000 from the people of Naphtali and the people of Zebulun. 7 And I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin's army, to meet you by (M)the river Kishon with his chariots and his troops, (N)and I will give him into your hand’?” 8 Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go, but if you will not go with me, I will not go.” 9 And she said, “I will surely go with you. Nevertheless, the road on which you are going will not lead to your glory, for the Lord will (O)sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called out (P)Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh. And 10,000 men went up at his heels, and Deborah went up with him.
11 Now Heber (Q)the Kenite had separated from the Kenites, the descendants of (R)Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, and had pitched his tent as far away as the oak in (S)Zaanannim, which is near Kedesh.
12 When Sisera was told that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor, 13 Sisera called out all his chariots, (T)900 chariots of iron, and all the men who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14 And Deborah said to Barak, “Up! For this is the day in which (U)the Lord has given Sisera into your hand. (V)Does not the Lord go out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him. 15 (W)And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army before Barak by the edge of the sword. And Sisera got down from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 And Barak pursued the chariots and the army to Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left.
17 But Sisera fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael came out to meet Sisera and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord; turn aside to me; do not be afraid.” So he turned aside to her into the tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 And he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened (X)a skin of milk and gave him a drink and covered him. 20 And he said to her, “Stand at the opening of the tent, and if any man comes and asks you, ‘Is anyone here?’ say, ‘No.’” 21 But Jael the wife of Heber took a tent peg, and took a hammer in her hand. Then she went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple until it went down into the ground while he was lying fast asleep from weariness. So he died. 22 And behold, as Barak was pursuing Sisera, Jael went out to meet him and said to him, “Come, and I will show you the man whom you are seeking.” So he went in to her tent, and there lay Sisera dead, with the tent peg in his temple.
23 (Y)So on that day God subdued Jabin the king of Canaan before the people of Israel. 24 And the hand of the people of Israel pressed harder and harder against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.

4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. 5 (I)And she would sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the mountains of Ephraim. And the children of Israel came up to her for judgment. 6 Then she sent and called for (J)Barak the son of Abinoam from (K)Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “Has not the Lord God of Israel commanded, ‘Go and [a]deploy troops at Mount (L)Tabor; take with you ten thousand men of the sons of Naphtali and of the sons of Zebulun; 7 and against you (M)I will deploy Sisera, the commander of Jabin’s army, with his chariots and his multitude at the (N)River Kishon; and I will [b]deliver him into your hand’?”
8 And Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, then I will go; but if you will not go with me, I will not go!”
9 So she said, “I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the Lord will (O)sell Sisera into the hand of a woman.” Then Deborah arose and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 And Barak called (P)Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; he went up with ten thousand men (Q)under[c] his command, and Deborah went up with him.
11 Now Heber (R)the Kenite, of the children of (S)Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had separated himself from the Kenites and pitched his tent near the terebinth tree at Zaanaim, (T)which is beside Kedesh.
12 And they reported to Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. 13 So Sisera gathered together all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth Hagoyim to the River Kishon.
14 Then Deborah said to Barak, [d]“Up! For this is the day in which the Lord has delivered Sisera into your hand. (U)Has not the Lord gone out before you?” So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15 And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth Hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was (V)left.
17 However, Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of (W)Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. 18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, “Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear.” And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a [e]blanket.
19 Then he said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty.” So she opened (X)a jug of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him. 20 And he said to her, “Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and inquires of you, and says, ‘Is there any man here?’ you shall say, ‘No.’ ”
21 Then Jael, Heber’s wife, (Y)took a tent peg and took a hammer in her hand, and went softly to him and drove the peg into his temple, and it went down into the ground; for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died. 22 And then, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, “Come, I will show you the man whom you seek.” And when he went into her tent, there lay Sisera, dead with the peg in his temple.
23 So on that day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan in the presence of the children of Israel. 24 And the hand of the children of Israel grew stronger and stronger against Jabin king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.
