7 Da machte sich Jerubbaal, das ist Gideon, früh auf und alles Volk, das mit ihm war, und lagerten sich an den Brunnen Harod, daß er das Heer der Midianiter hatte gegen Mitternacht vom dem Hügel More im Grund.
2 Der HERR aber sprach zu Gideon: Des Volks ist zu viel, das mit dir ist, daß ich sollte Midian in ihre Hände geben; Israel möchte sich rühmen wider mich und sagen: Meine Hand hat mich erlöst.
3 So laß nun ausrufen vor den Ohren des Volks und sagen: Wer blöde und verzagt ist, der kehre um und hebe sich alsbald vom Gebirge Gilead. Da kehrten des Volks um bei zweiundzwanzigtausend, daß nur zehntausend übrigblieben.
4 Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Des Volks ist noch zu viel. Führe sie sie hinab ans Wasser, daselbst will ich sie dir prüfen. Und von welchem ich dir sagen werde, daß er mit dir ziehen soll, der soll mit dir ziehen; von welchem aber ich sagen werde, daß er nicht mit dir ziehen soll, der soll nicht ziehen.
5 Und er führte das Volk hinab ans Wasser. Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Wer mit seiner Zunge Wasser leckt, wie ein Hund leckt, den stelle besonders; des gleichen wer auf seine Kniee fällt, zu trinken.
6 Da war die Zahl derer, die geleckt hatten aus der Hand zum Mund, dreihundert Mann; das andere Volk alles hatte knieend getrunken.
7 Und der HERR sprach zu Gideon: Durch die dreihundert Mann, die geleckt haben, will ich euch erlösen und die Midianiter in deine Hände geben; aber das andere Volk laß alles gehen an seinen Ort.
8 Und sie nahmen Zehrung für das Volk mit sich und ihre Posaunen. Aber die andern Israeliten ließ er alle gehen, einen jeglichen in seine Hütte; die dreihundert Mann aber behielt er. Und das Heer der Midianiter lag unten vor ihm im Grunde.
9 Und der HERR sprach in derselben Nacht zu ihm: Stehe auf und gehe hinab zum Lager; denn ich habe es in deine Hände gegeben.
10 Fürchtest du dich aber hinabzugehen, so laß deinen Diener Pura mit dir hinabgehen zum Lager,
11 daß du hörst, was sie reden. Darnach werden deine Hände stark sein, und du wirst hinabziehen zum Lager. Da ging Gideon mit seinem Diener Pura hinab vorn an den Ort der Schildwächter, die im Lager waren.
12 Und die Midianiter und Amalekiter und alle aus dem Morgenland hatten sich niedergelegt im Grunde wie eine große Menge Heuschrecken; und ihre Kamele waren nicht zu zählen vor der Menge wie der Sand am Ufer des Meers.
13 Da nun Gideon kam, siehe, da erzählte einer einem andern einen Traum und sprach: Siehe, mir hat geträumt: mich deuchte, ein geröstetes Gerstenbrot wälzte sich zum Heer der Midianiter; und da es kam an die Gezelte, schlug es dieselben und warf sie nieder und kehrte sie um, das Oberste zu unterst, daß das Gezelt lag.
14 Da antwortete der andere: Das ist nichts anderes denn das Schwert Gideons, des Sohnes Joas, des Israeliten. Gott hat die Midianiter in seine Hände gegeben mit dem ganzen Heer.
15 Da Gideon den hörte solchen Traum erzählen und seine Auslegung, betete er an und kam wieder ins Heer Israels und sprach: Macht euch auf, denn der HERR hat das Heer der Midianiter in eure Hände gegeben.
16 und er teilte die dreihundert Mann in drei Haufen und gab einem jeglichen eine Posaune in seine Hand und leere Krüge mit Fackeln darin
17 und sprach zu ihnen: Seht auf mich und tut auch also; und siehe, wenn ich vor das Lager komme, wie ich tue so tut ihr auch.
18 Wenn ich die Posaune blase und alle, die mit mir sind, so sollt ihr auch die Posaune blasen ums ganze Heer und sprechen: Hie HERR und Gideon!
19 Also kam Gideon und hundert Mann mit ihm vor das Lager, zu Anfang der mittelsten Nachtwache, da sie eben die Wächter aufgestellt hatten, und bliesen mit Posaunen und zerschlugen die Krüge in ihren Händen.
20 Also bliesen alle drei Haufen mit Posaunen und zerbrachen die Krüge. Sie hielten aber die Fackeln in ihrer linken Hand und die Posaunen in ihrer rechten Hand, daß sie bliesen und riefen: Hie Schwert des HERRN und Gideons!
21 Und ein jeglicher stand auf seinem Ort um das Lager her. Da ward das ganze Heer laufend, und schrieen und flohen.
22 Und indem die dreihundert Mann bliesen die Posaunen, schaffte der HERR, daß sie im ganzen Heer eines jeglichen Schwert wider den andern war. Und das Heer floh bis Beth-Sitta gen Zereda, bis an die Grenze von Abel-Mehola bei Tabbath.
23 Und die Männer Israels von Naphthali, von Asser und vom ganzen Manasse wurden zuhauf gerufen und jagten den Midianitern nach.
24 Und Gideon sandte Botschaft auf das ganze Gebirge Ephraim und ließ sagen: Kommt herab, den Midanitern entgegen, und gewinnt das Wasser vor ihnen bis gen Beth-Bara und auch den Jordan. Da eilten zusammen alle, die von Ephraim waren, und gewannen das Wasser vor ihnen bis gen Beth-Bara und den Jordan
25 und fingen zwei Fürsten der Midianiter, Oreb und Seeb, und erwürgten Oreb auf dem Fels Oreb und Seeb in der Kelter Seeb, und jagten die Midianiter und brachten die Häupter Orebs und Seebs zu Gideon über den Jordan.

Gott wählt Gideons Soldaten aus
7 In aller Frühe führte Gideon, den man auch Jerubbaal nannte, sein Heer zur Quelle Harod. Dort schlugen sie ihr Lager auf. Nördlich von ihnen im Tal lagerten die Midianiter am Fuß des Hügels More.
2 Der Herr sprach zu Gideon: »Du hast zu viele Soldaten! Diesem großen Heer will ich nicht den Sieg über die Midianiter schenken! Sonst werden die Israeliten mir gegenüber prahlen: ›Wir haben uns aus eigener Kraft befreit!‹ 3 Ruf deshalb im Lager aus, dass alle, die Angst haben, umkehren sollen!« So verkleinerte Gideon sein Heer.[a] 22.000 Mann machten kehrt, und 10.000 blieben zurück.
4 Doch der Herr sagte zu Gideon: »Es sind immer noch zu viele! Führ sie zur Quelle hinab. Ich will sie dort selbst noch einmal prüfen und dir dann sagen, wer mit dir ziehen soll und wer nicht.« 5 Gideon ging mit den Männern an die Quelle. Der Herr befahl ihm: »Alle, die das Wasser auflecken wie ein Hund, stell auf die eine Seite! Auf die andere Seite lass alle gehen, die sich zum Trinken hingekniet haben.« 6 300 Mann führten das Wasser mit der Hand zum Mund und leckten es dann auf, alle anderen knieten zum Trinken nieder.[b]
7 Da sprach der Herr zu Gideon: »Durch die 300 Männer, die das Wasser aus der Hand getrunken haben, werde ich Israel befreien und die Midianiter in deine Gewalt geben! Alle anderen sollen nach Hause gehen.« 8 Gideon entließ die Männer und behielt nur die 300 bei sich. Sie übernahmen die Vorräte und die Signalhörner der anderen. All dies geschah oberhalb der Talebene, in der die Midianiter lagerten.
Gideon schlägt die Midianiter in die Flucht
9 In der Nacht sprach der Herr zu Gideon: »Greif die Midianiter an! Ich gebe ihr Lager in deine Gewalt! 10 Wenn du aber Angst hast, dann geh vorher mit deinem Diener Pura hinunter 11 und hör dir an, was sie dort reden. Das wird dir Mut geben, sie anzugreifen!«
Da ging Gideon mit Pura zum Lager hinab und schlich sich an die bewaffneten Vorposten heran. 12 Die Midianiter, Amalekiter und andere Völker aus dem Osten hatten sich im Tal ausgebreitet wie ein Heuschreckenschwarm. Ihre Kamele waren so zahlreich wie der Sand am Meer.
13 Gideon kam ganz nahe an die feindlichen Soldaten heran und hörte, wie ein Mann gerade zu seinem Kameraden sagte: »Ich muss dir etwas erzählen! Ich habe geträumt, dass ein riesiges Gerstenbrot in unser Lager gerollt ist. Es hat ein Zelt getroffen und umgerissen. Alles flog durcheinander und stürzte zu Boden.« 14 Der andere erwiderte: »Das kann nur eins bedeuten: das Schwert des Israeliten Gideon, des Sohnes von Joasch! Gott wird ihm den Sieg über uns Midianiter und unser ganzes Lager schenken!«
15 Als Gideon den Traum und die Deutung gehört hatte, warf er sich nieder und betete Gott an. Dann kehrte er ins israelitische Lager zurück und rief: »Los! Der Herr gibt die Midianiter in eure Gewalt!«
16 Er teilte seine 300 Soldaten in drei Gruppen und gab jedem Mann ein Signalhorn und einen Krug mit einer Fackel darin. 17-18 »Stellt euch rings um das ganze Heerlager auf«, befahl er, »und achtet genau auf das, was ich tue! Wenn ich mit meinen Leuten zu den Wachposten komme, blasen wir die Hörner. Sobald ihr das hört, tut ihr das Gleiche und schreit laut: ›Wir kämpfen für den Herrn und für Gideon!‹«
19 Gideon erreichte mit seinen 100 Mann den Rand des Lagers, als die mittlere Nachtwache begann und die Posten gerade abgelöst worden waren. Da bliesen sie die Hörner und zerschlugen ihre Krüge. 20 Sofort taten die Männer der beiden anderen Abteilungen das Gleiche. In der rechten Hand hielten sie die Hörner, in der linken die Fackeln und riefen: »Wir kämpfen für den Herrn und für Gideon!« 21 Dabei blieben sie rings um das Heerlager stehen. Die feindlichen Soldaten liefen durcheinander, schrien und versuchten zu entkommen. 22 Während die 300 Israeliten die Hörner bliesen, ließ der Herr überall im Lager Kämpfe unter den Verbündeten ausbrechen. Schließlich floh das ganze Heer in Richtung Bet-Schitta, Zereda[c], Abel-Mehola und Tabbat.
23 Gideon rief die Männer der Stämme Naftali, Asser und Manasse zusammen, um die Midianiter zu verfolgen. 24 Er sandte auch Boten zum Stamm Ephraim im Gebirge und ließ den Männern dort ausrichten: »Kommt herab und stellt euch den Midianitern in den Weg! Besetzt die Wasserstellen bis nach Bet-Bara und die Übergänge des Jordan!«
Die Ephraimiter folgten der Anordnung, 25 sie nahmen zwei midianitische Fürsten, Oreb und Seeb, gefangen und töteten sie. Die Orte, wo dies geschah, nannten sie Oreb-Fels und Seeb-Kelter. Danach nahmen sie die Verfolgung der Midianiter wieder auf. Als sie den Jordan überquert hatten, trafen sie auf Gideon und übergaben ihm die abgeschlagenen Köpfe der beiden Fürsten.

7 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.
2 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.
3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.
4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.
6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.
7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.
8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.
10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:
11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.
12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.
13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.
14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.
16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.
17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.
18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.
20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.
21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.
22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Bethshittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.
23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.
25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

Gideon Defeats the Midianites
7 Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal(A) (that is, Gideon(B)) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod.(C) The camp of Midian(D) was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh.(E) 2 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against me, ‘My own strength(F) has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.(G)’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
4 But the Lord said to Gideon, “There are still too many(H) men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there. If I say, ‘This one shall go with you,’ he shall go; but if I say, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ he shall not go.”
5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them(I) drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink.
7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands.(J) Let all the others go home.”(K) 8 So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.
Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. 9 During that night the Lord said to Gideon, “Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands.(L) 10 If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 11 and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp.” So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. 12 The Midianites, the Amalekites(M) and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts.(N) Their camels(O) could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.(P)
13 Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. “I had a dream,” he was saying. “A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed.”
14 His friend responded, “This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash,(Q) the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands.”
15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped.(R) He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.”(S) 16 Dividing the three hundred men(T) into three companies,(U) he placed trumpets(V) and empty jars(W) in the hands of all of them, with torches(X) inside.
17 “Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets,(Y) then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.’”
19 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars(Z) that were in their hands. 20 The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches(AA) in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, “A sword(AB) for the Lord and for Gideon!” 21 While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled.(AC)
22 When the three hundred trumpets sounded,(AD) the Lord caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other(AE) with their swords.(AF) The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah(AG) near Tabbath. 23 Israelites from Naphtali, Asher(AH) and all Manasseh were called out,(AI) and they pursued the Midianites.(AJ) 24 Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, “Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan(AK) ahead of them as far as Beth Barah.”
So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they seized the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. 25 They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb(AL). They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb,(AM) and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites(AN) and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan.(AO)
