15 Es begab sich aber nach einiger Zeit in den Tagen der Weizenernte, daß Simson sein Weib mit einem Ziegenböcklein besuchte. Als er aber sagte: Ich will zu meinem Weibe in die Kammer gehen, wollte ihr Vater ihn nicht hineinlassen. 2 Denn ihr Vater sprach: Ich dachte, du wärest ihr gram geworden, da habe ich sie deinem Gefährten gegeben! Ist nicht ihre jüngere Schwester schöner als sie? Die soll dein sein statt jener! 3 Da sprach Simson zu ihnen: Diesmal bin ich unschuldig, wenn ich den Philistern Übles tue!
4 Und Simson ging hin und fing dreihundert Füchse und nahm Fackeln, kehrte je einen Schwanz gegen den andern und tat je eine Fackel zwischen zwei Schwänze, 5 zündete dieselben mit Feuer an und ließ sie unter das Korn der Philister laufen und zündete also die Garben an samt dem stehenden Korn und den Olivengärten.
6 Da sprachen die Philister: Wer hat das getan? Da sagte man: Simson, der Tochtermann des Timniters, weil er ihm sein Weib genommen und sie seinem Gefährten gegeben hat! Da zogen die Philister hinauf und verbrannten sie samt ihrem Vater mit Feuer. 7 Simson aber sprach zu ihnen: Wenn ihr solches tut, so will ich nicht eher aufhören, als bis ich an euch Rache genommen habe! 8 Und er zerschlug ihnen Schenkel und Hüften mit gewaltigen Schlägen. Dann stieg er hinab und blieb in der Felsenkluft zu Etam.
9 Da zogen die Philister hinauf und lagerten sich in Juda und ließen sich nieder zu Lechi. 10 Aber die Männer von Juda sprachen: Warum seid ihr wider uns heraufgezogen? Sie antworteten: Wir sind heraufgekommen, Simson zu binden, um ihm zu tun, wie er uns getan hat!
11 Da zogen dreitausend Mann von Juda hinab zur Felsenkluft von Etam und sprachen zu Simson: Weißt du nicht, daß die Philister über uns herrschen? Warum hast du uns denn das getan? Er sprach zu ihnen: Wie sie mir getan haben, so habe ich ihnen getan. 12 Sie sprachen zu ihm: Wir sind herabgekommen, um dich zu binden und in die Hand der Philister zu geben! Simson sprach zu ihnen: So schwört mir, daß ihr mich nicht töten wollt! 13 Sie antworteten ihm: Nein! wir wollen dich nur binden und in ihre Hand geben und wollen dich nicht töten! Und sie banden ihn mit zwei neuen Stricken und führten ihn von der Kluft herauf.
14 Als er nun nach Lechi kam, jauchzten ihm die Philister entgegen. Da kam der Geist des Herrn über ihn; und die Stricke an seinen Armen wurden wie Fäden, die das Feuer versengt hat, so daß die Bande von seinen Händen fielen. 15 Und er fand einen frischen Eselskinnbacken; da streckte er seine Hand aus und nahm ihn und erschlug damit tausend Mann.
16 Und Simson sprach:
„Mit dem Eselskinnbacken färbte ich sie rot, mit dem Eselskinnbacken schlug ich tausend Mann tot!“
17 Und als er diesen Ausspruch getan, warf er den Kinnbacken aus seiner Hand und hieß jenen Ort Ramat-Lechi[a].
18 Da ihn aber sehr dürstete, rief er den Herrn an und sprach: Du hast durch die Hand deines Knechtes dieses große Heil gegeben; soll ich nun aber vor Durst sterben und in die Hand der Unbeschnittenen fallen? 19 Da spaltete Gott die Höhlung, die bei Lechi ist, so daß Wasser herausfloß; und als er trank, kehrte sein Geist wieder, und er lebte auf. Darum heißt man sie noch heute „Quelle des Anrufers“; sie ist bei Lechi.
20 Und er richtete Israel zur Zeit der Philister zwanzig Jahre lang.

15 Después de algún tiempo, en los días de la siega del trigo, sucedió que Sansón visitó a su mujer con un cabrito(A), y dijo: Llegaré a mi mujer en su recámara. Pero el padre de ella no lo dejó entrar. 2 Y el padre[a] dijo: Realmente pensé que la odiabas intensamente y se la di a tu compañero(B). ¿No es su hermana menor más hermosa[b] que ella? Te ruego que la tomes en su lugar. 3 Entonces Sansón le[c] respondió: Esta vez no tendré culpa en cuanto a los filisteos cuando les haga daño. 4 Y Sansón fue y capturó trescientas zorras, tomó antorchas, juntó las zorras cola con cola y puso una antorcha en medio de cada dos colas. 5 Después de prender fuego a las antorchas, soltó las zorras[d] en los sembrados de los filisteos, quemando la mies recogida, la mies en pie, y además las viñas y los olivares. 6 Entonces los filisteos dijeron: ¿Quién hizo esto? Y les respondieron: Sansón, el yerno del timnateo, porque este tomó a su mujer y se la dio a su compañero. Y los filisteos vinieron y la quemaron a ella y a su padre(C). 7 Y Sansón les dijo: Ya que actuáis así, ciertamente me vengaré de vosotros, y después de eso, cesaré[e]. 8 Y sin piedad los hirió[f] con gran mortandad; y descendió y habitó en la hendidura de la peña de Etam.
La quijada de asno
9 Subieron los filisteos y acamparon en Judá, y se esparcieron por Lehi. 10 Y los hombres de Judá dijeron: ¿Por qué habéis subido contra nosotros? Y ellos dijeron: Hemos subido para prender a Sansón a fin de hacerle como él nos ha hecho. 11 Tres mil hombres de Judá descendieron a la hendidura de la peña de Etam, y dijeron a Sansón: ¿No sabes que los filisteos reinan sobre nosotros(D)? ¿Qué, pues, es esto que nos has hecho? Y él les dijo: Como ellos me hicieron, así les he hecho. 12 Y ellos le dijeron: Hemos descendido para prenderte y entregarte en manos de los filisteos. Y Sansón les dijo: Juradme que no me mataréis[g]. 13 Ellos le respondieron[h]: No, sino que te ataremos bien y te entregaremos en sus manos; ciertamente no te mataremos. Entonces lo ataron con dos sogas nuevas y lo sacaron de la peña.
14 Al llegar él a Lehi, los filisteos salieron a su encuentro gritando. Y el Espíritu del Señor vino[i] sobre él(E) con poder, y las sogas que estaban en sus brazos fueron como lino quemado con fuego y las ataduras cayeron[j] de sus manos. 15 Y halló una quijada de asno fresca aún, y extendiendo su mano, la tomó y mató[k] a mil hombres con ella(F). 16 Entonces Sansón dijo:
Con la quijada de un asno,
montones sobre montones[l],
con la quijada de un asno
he matado[m] a mil hombres.
17 Y[n] al terminar de hablar, arrojó la quijada de su mano, y llamó a aquel lugar Ramat-lehi[o]. 18 Después sintió una gran sed, y clamando al Señor(G), dijo: Tú has dado esta gran liberación por mano de tu siervo, y ahora, ¿moriré yo[p] de sed y[q] caeré en manos de los incircuncisos? 19 Y abrió Dios la cuenca que está en Lehi y salió agua de ella. Cuando bebió, recobró sus fuerzas[r] y se reanimó(H). Por eso llamó a aquel lugar[s] En-hacore[t], el cual está en Lehi hasta el día de hoy. 20 Sansón juzgó a Israel veinte años(I) en los días de los filisteos(J).

Samson’s Vengeance on the Philistines
15 Later on, at the time of wheat harvest,(A) Samson(B) took a young goat(C) and went to visit his wife. He said, “I’m going to my wife’s room.”(D) But her father would not let him go in.
2 “I was so sure you hated her,” he said, “that I gave her to your companion.(E) Isn’t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.”
3 Samson said to them, “This time I have a right to get even with the Philistines; I will really harm them.” 4 So he went out and caught three hundred foxes(F) and tied them tail to tail in pairs. He then fastened a torch(G) to every pair of tails, 5 lit the torches(H) and let the foxes loose in the standing grain of the Philistines. He burned up the shocks(I) and standing grain, together with the vineyards and olive groves.
6 When the Philistines asked, “Who did this?” they were told, “Samson, the Timnite’s son-in-law, because his wife was given to his companion.(J)”
So the Philistines went up and burned her(K) and her father to death.(L) 7 Samson said to them, “Since you’ve acted like this, I swear that I won’t stop until I get my revenge on you.” 8 He attacked them viciously and slaughtered many of them. Then he went down and stayed in a cave in the rock(M) of Etam.(N)
9 The Philistines went up and camped in Judah, spreading out near Lehi.(O) 10 The people of Judah asked, “Why have you come to fight us?”
“We have come to take Samson prisoner,” they answered, “to do to him as he did to us.”
11 Then three thousand men from Judah went down to the cave in the rock of Etam and said to Samson, “Don’t you realize that the Philistines are rulers over us?(P) What have you done to us?”
He answered, “I merely did to them what they did to me.”
12 They said to him, “We’ve come to tie you up and hand you over to the Philistines.”
Samson said, “Swear to me(Q) that you won’t kill me yourselves.”
13 “Agreed,” they answered. “We will only tie you up and hand you over to them. We will not kill you.” So they bound him with two new ropes(R) and led him up from the rock. 14 As he approached Lehi,(S) the Philistines came toward him shouting. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him.(T) The ropes on his arms became like charred flax,(U) and the bindings dropped from his hands. 15 Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.(V)
16 Then Samson said,
“With a donkey’s jawbone
I have made donkeys of them.[a](W)
With a donkey’s jawbone
I have killed a thousand men.”
17 When he finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone; and the place was called Ramath Lehi.[b](X)
18 Because he was very thirsty, he cried out to the Lord,(Y) “You have given your servant this great victory.(Z) Must I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?” 19 Then God opened up the hollow place in Lehi, and water came out of it. When Samson drank, his strength returned and he revived.(AA) So the spring(AB) was called En Hakkore,[c] and it is still there in Lehi.
20 Samson led[d] Israel for twenty years(AC) in the days of the Philistines.

Samson Defeats the Philistines
15 After a while, in the time of wheat harvest, it happened that Samson visited his wife with a (A)young goat. And he said, “Let me go in to my wife, into her room.” But her father would not permit him to go in.
2 Her father said, “I really thought that you thoroughly (B)hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please, take her instead.”
3 And Samson said to them, “This time I shall be blameless regarding the Philistines if I harm them!” 4 Then Samson went and caught three hundred foxes; and he took torches, turned the foxes tail to tail, and put a torch between each pair of tails. 5 When he had set the torches on fire, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines, and burned up both the shocks and the standing grain, as well as the vineyards and olive groves.
6 Then the Philistines said, “Who has done this?”
And they answered, “Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.” (C)So the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.
7 Samson said to them, “Since you would do a thing like this, I will surely take revenge on you, and after that I will cease.” 8 So he attacked them hip and thigh with a great slaughter; then he went down and dwelt in the cleft of the rock of (D)Etam.
9 Now the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and deployed themselves (E)against Lehi. 10 And the men of Judah said, “Why have you come up against us?”
So they answered, “We have come up to [a]arrest Samson, to do to him as he has done to us.”
11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, “Do you not know that the Philistines (F)rule over us? What is this you have done to us?”
And he said to them, “As they did to me, so I have done to them.”
12 But they said to him, “We have come down to arrest you, that we may deliver you into the hand of the Philistines.”
Then Samson said to them, “Swear to me that you will not kill me yourselves.”
13 So they spoke to him, saying, “No, but we will tie you securely and deliver you into their hand; but we will surely not kill you.” And they bound him with two (G)new ropes and brought him up from the rock.
14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. Then (H)the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him; and the ropes that were on his arms became like flax that is burned with fire, and his bonds [b]broke loose from his hands. 15 He found a fresh jawbone of a donkey, reached out his hand and took it, and (I)killed a thousand men with it. 16 Then Samson said:
“With the jawbone of a donkey,
Heaps upon heaps,
With the jawbone of a donkey
I have slain a thousand men!”
17 And so it was, when he had finished speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and called that place [c]Ramath Lehi.
18 Then he became very thirsty; so he cried out to the Lord and said, (J)“You have given this great deliverance by the hand of Your servant; and now shall I die of thirst and fall into the hand of the uncircumcised?” 19 So God split the hollow place that is in [d]Lehi, and water came out, and he drank; and (K)his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore he called its name [e]En Hakkore, which is in Lehi to this day. 20 And (L)he judged Israel (M)twenty years (N)in the days of the Philistines.
