9 And the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the bottomless pit;^(A)

¹⁰ The third angel blew his trumpet, and a great star fell from heaven, blazing like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water.^(A)

² he opened the shaft of the bottomless pit, and from the shaft rose smoke like the smoke of a great furnace, and the sun and the air were darkened with the smoke from the shaft.^(A)

⁷ “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’ ” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).

¹⁸ and the Living One. I was dead, and see, I am alive forever and ever, and I have the keys of Death and of Hades.^(A)

Godlessness in the Last Days

3 You must understand this, that in the last days distressing times will come. ² For people will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,^{(A) 3} unfeeling, implacable, slanderers, profligates, brutes, haters of good,^{(B) 4} treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,^{(C) 5} holding to the outward form of godliness but denying its power. Avoid them!

The Thousand Years

20 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain.

⁸ The beast that you saw was and is not and is about to ascend from the bottomless pit and go to destruction. And the inhabitants of the earth, whose names have not been written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, will be amazed when they see the beast, because it was and is not and is to come.^(A)

¹¹ They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon,^[a] and in Greek he is called Apollyon.^[b](A)

¹² The first woe has passed. There are still two woes to come.^(B)

¹³ Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a voice from the horns^[c] of the golden altar before God,^(C)

³¹ They begged him not to order them to go back into the abyss.^(A)
