^8 (A)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And ^[a]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, ^(B)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, ^(C)and by the beasts of the earth.

² And it shall be, if they say to you, ‘Where should we go?’ then you shall tell them, ‘Thus says the Lord:

³ “And I will ^(C)appoint over them four forms of destruction,” says the Lord: “the sword to slay, the dogs to drag, ^(D)the birds of the heavens and the beasts of the earth to devour and destroy.

³ with the third chariot white horses, and with the fourth chariot dappled horses—strong steeds.

⁴ “They shall die ^(A)gruesome deaths; they shall not be ^(B)lamented nor shall they be ^(C)buried, but they shall be ^(D)like refuse on the face of the earth. They shall be consumed by the sword and by famine, and their ^(E)corpses shall be meat for the birds of heaven and for the beasts of the earth.”

¹⁸ By these three plagues a third of mankind was killed—by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone which came out of their mouths.

^18 (A)I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, ^(B)I am alive forevermore. Amen. And ^(C)I have the keys of ^[a]Hades and of Death.

¹³ The sea gave up the dead who were in it, ^(A)and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. ^(B)And they were judged, each one according to his works. ¹⁴ Then ^(C)Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. ^(D)This is the second ^[a]death.

¹⁵ So the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released to kill a ^(A)third of mankind.
