(A)Then one of the seven angels who have the (B)seven bowls [a]full of the (C)seven last plagues came and spoke with me, saying, “(D)Come here, I will show you the (E)bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

New Jerusalem, the Holy City

10 And (F)he carried me away [b](G)in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me (H)the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, 11 having (I)the glory of God. Her [c]brilliance was like precious stone, as a (J)stone of (K)crystal-clear jasper. 12 [d]It had a great and high wall. [e]It had (L)twelve (M)gates and at those gates, twelve angels; and names [f]have been written on those gates, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east and three gates on the north and three gates on the south and three gates on the west. 14 And the wall of the city had (N)twelve foundation stones, and on them were the twelve names of the (O)twelve apostles of the Lamb.

15 And the one who spoke with me had a [g]gold measuring (P)rod to measure the city and its (Q)gates and its wall. 16 And the city is laid out as a square, and its length is as great as the width; and he measured the city with the [h]rod, [i]12,000 stadia; its length and width and height are equal. 17 And he measured its wall, [j]144 cubits, according to (R)human [k]measurements, which are also (S)angelic measurements. 18 And the material of the wall was (T)jasper, and the city was (U)pure gold, like pure (V)glass. 19 (W)The foundation stones of the city wall were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation stone was (X)jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, (Y)emerald; 20 the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, (Z)sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the twelfth, amethyst. 21 And the twelve (AA)gates were twelve (AB)pearls; each one of the gates was a single pearl. And the street of the city was (AC)pure gold, like transparent (AD)glass.

22 And I saw (AE)no sanctuary in it, for the (AF)Lord God the Almighty and the (AG)Lamb are its sanctuary. 23 And the city (AH)has no need of the sun or of the moon to shine on it, for (AI)the glory of God has illumined it, and its lamp is the (AJ)Lamb. 24 (AK)And the nations will walk by its light, and the (AL)kings of the earth [l]will bring their glory into it. 25 (AM)And its gates (AN)will never be closed by day, for (AO)there will be no night there; 26 and (AP)they will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 And (AQ)nothing defiled, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those [m]whose names are (AR)written in the Lamb’s book of life.

The New Jerusalem

One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls that were filled with the seven last plagues came and spoke with me. He said, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

10 He carried me away in spirit to a great and high mountain, and he showed me the[a] Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It has the glory of God. Its radiance is similar to a very precious stone, like crystal-clear jasper.

12 It has a large, high wall. It has twelve gates. Twelve angels are at the gates, and twelve names are engraved on the gates, the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel. 13 Three gates are on the east, three on the north, three on the south, and three on the west. 14 The city’s wall also has twelve foundations, and on them are the twelve names of the Lamb’s twelve apostles.

15 The one who spoke with me had a gold measuring rod so that he could measure the city, its gates, and its wall. 16 The city is laid out as a square. Its length and width are equal. He measured the city with the measuring rod: 12,000 stadia.[b] Its length, width, and height are equal. 17 He also measured its wall by human measurement, which was what the angel used: 144 cubits.

18 The wall is made of jasper, and the city is pure gold, like pure glass. 19 The foundations of the city’s wall had been adorned with every kind of precious stone.

The first foundation is jasper,
the second sapphire,
the third agate,
the fourth emerald,
20 the fifth onyx,
the sixth ruby,[c]
the seventh diamond,[d]
the eighth beryl,
the ninth topaz,
the tenth turquoise,[e]
the eleventh jacinth,
the twelfth amethyst.

21 The twelve gates are twelve pearls. Each of the gates is made out of one pearl. And the street of the city is pure gold, like transparent glass.

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, because the glory of God has given it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations[f] will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory[g] into it. 25 There is no day when its gates will be shut, for there will be no night in that place. 26 They will bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. 27 Nothing that is unclean and no one who does what is detestable or who tells lies will ever enter it, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.
