¹⁸ The nations were angry,^(A)
    and your wrath has come.
The time has come for judging the dead,^(B)
    and for rewarding your servants the prophets^(C)
and your people who revere your name,
    both great and small^(D)—
and for destroying those who destroy the earth.”

⁸ For the Lord has a day^(A) of vengeance,^(B)
    a year of retribution,^(C) to uphold Zion’s cause.

¹⁷ He put on righteousness as his breastplate,^(A)
    and the helmet^(B) of salvation on his head;
he put on the garments^(C) of vengeance^(D)
    and wrapped himself in zeal^(E) as in a cloak.
¹⁸ According to what they have done,
    so will he repay^(F)
wrath to his enemies
    and retribution to his foes;
    he will repay the islands^(G) their due.
¹⁹ From the west,^(H) people will fear the name of the Lord,
    and from the rising of the sun,^(I) they will revere his glory.^(J)
For he will come like a pent-up flood
    that the breath^(K) of the Lord drives along.^[a]

⁸ “Assyria^(A) will fall by no human sword;
    a sword, not of mortals, will devour^(B) them.
They will flee before the sword
    and their young men will be put to forced labor.^(C)

³ “I have trodden the winepress^(A) alone;
    from the nations no one was with me.
I trampled^(B) them in my anger
    and trod them down in my wrath;^(C)
their blood spattered my garments,^(D)
    and I stained all my clothing.
⁴ It was for me the day of vengeance;^(E)
    the year for me to redeem had come.
⁵ I looked, but there was no one^(F) to help,
    I was appalled that no one gave support;
so my own arm^(G) achieved salvation for me,
    and my own wrath sustained me.^(H)
6 I trampled^(I) the nations in my anger;
    in my wrath I made them drunk^(J)
    and poured their blood^(K) on the ground.”

¹¹ I will punish^(A) the world for its evil,
    the wicked^(B) for their sins.
I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty^(C)
    and will humble^(D) the pride of the ruthless.^(E)
