Lament Over Babylon the Great
18 After these things I saw another angel descending from heaven, who had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. 2 And he cried out with a powerful voice, saying,
“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great,
and it has become a dwelling place of demons
and a haunt of every unclean spirit
and a haunt of every unclean bird
and a haunt of every unclean and detested animal.
3 For all the nations have drunk[a]
from the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality with her,
and the merchants of the earth have become rich
from the power of her sensuality.”
4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying,
“Come out from her, my people,
so that you will not participate in her sins,
and so that you will not receive her plagues,
5 because her sins have reached up to heaven,
and God has remembered her crimes.
6 Pay back to her as she herself also paid out,
and pay back double[b] according to her deeds;
in the cup that she mixed, mix double for her.
7 As much as she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
give to her so much torment and mourning,
because in her heart she said,
‘I sit as a queen, and am not a widow,
and I will never see mourning!’
8 Because of this her plagues will come in one day—
death and mourning and famine—
and she will be burned up with fire,
because the Lord God who passes judgment on her is powerful!”
9 And the kings of the earth will weep and mourn over her, those who committed sexual immorality and lived sensually with her, when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing far off[c] because of the fear of her torment, saying,
“Woe, woe, the great city,
Babylon the powerful city,
because in one hour your judgment has come!”
11 And the merchants of the earth weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more— 12 cargo of gold and silver and precious stones and pearls and fine linen and purple cloth and silk and scarlet cloth and all kinds of scented wood and all kinds of ivory goods and all kinds of goods of precious wood and bronze and iron and marble 13 and cinnamon and amomum[d] and incense and ointment and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine wheat flour and wheat and domesticated animals and sheep and horses and carriages and slaves[e] and human lives.
14 “And the fruit your soul desires[f] has departed from you,
and all the luxury and the splendor has perished from you,
and they will never find them any more.”
15 The merchants of these things, who became rich from them, will stand far off[g], weeping and mourning because of the fear of her torment, 16 saying,
“Woe, woe, the great city,
dressed in fine linen and purple cloth and scarlet cloth,
and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls,
17 because in one hour such great wealth has been laid waste!”
And every shipmaster and every seafarer[h] and sailors and all those who labor on the sea stood far off[i] 18 and began to cry out when they[j] saw the smoke of her burning, saying, “Who is like the great city?” 19 And they threw dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying,
“Woe, woe, the great city,
in which all those who had ships on the sea
became rich from her prosperity,
because in one hour she has been laid waste!”
20 Rejoice over her, heaven
and the saints and the apostles and the prophets,
because God has pronounced your judgment on her!”
21 And one powerful angel picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,
“In this way Babylon the great city will be thrown down with violence,
and will never be found again!
22 And the sound of harpists and musicians and flute players and trumpeters
will never be heard in you again!
And every craftsman of every trade
will never be found in you again!
And the sound of a mill
will never be heard in you again!
23 And the light of a lamp
will never shine in you again!
And the sound of a bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again!
For your merchants were the most important people of the earth,
because with your sorcery they deceived all the nations.
24 And in her was found the blood of prophets and saints
and all those who had been slaughtered on the earth.

18 (A)Dopo queste cose vidi scendere dal cielo un altro angelo che aveva una grande autorità, e la terra fu illuminata dal suo splendore[a]. 2 Egli gridò con voce potente: «È caduta, è caduta *Babilonia[b] la grande! È diventata ricettacolo di demòni, covo di ogni spirito immondo, rifugio di ogni uccello impuro e abominevole[c]. 3 Perché tutte le nazioni hanno bevuto del vino della sua prostituzione furente, e i re della terra hanno fornicato con lei, e i mercanti della terra si sono arricchiti con gli eccessi del suo lusso».
4 Poi udii un'altra voce dal cielo che diceva: «Uscite da essa, o popolo mio, affinché non siate complici dei suoi peccati e non siate coinvolti nei suoi castighi[d]; 5 perché i suoi peccati si sono accumulati fino al cielo[e] e Dio si è ricordato delle sue *iniquità. 6 Usatele il trattamento che lei usava, datele doppia retribuzione per le sue opere; nel calice in cui ha versato ad altri, versatele il doppio. 7 Datele tormento e afflizione nella stessa misura in cui ha glorificato sé stessa e vissuto nel lusso. Poiché dice in cuor suo: “Io sono regina, non sono vedova e non vedrò mai lutto”. 8 Perciò in uno stesso giorno verranno i suoi flagelli: morte, lutto e fame, e sarà consumata dal fuoco[f]; poiché potente è Dio, il Signore che l'ha giudicata[g].
9 (B)«I re della terra, che fornicavano e vivevano in lascivie con lei, quando vedranno il fumo del suo incendio piangeranno e faranno cordoglio per lei. 10 Spaventati dai suoi tormenti se ne staranno lontani e diranno: “Ahi! ahi! Babilonia, la gran città, la potente città! Il tuo giudizio è venuto in un momento!” 11 I mercanti della terra piangeranno e faranno cordoglio per lei, perché nessuno compra piú le loro merci: 12 oro, argento, pietre preziose, perle, lino pregiato, porpora, seta, scarlatto, ogni varietà di legno odoroso, ogni varietà di oggetti d'avorio e di legno preziosissimo, rame, ferro, marmo, 13 cannella, spezie, profumi, unguenti, incenso, vino, olio, fior di farina, grano, buoi, pecore, cavalli, carri e persino i corpi e le anime di uomini. 14 I frutti che l'anima tua desiderava sono andati lontani da te; tutte le cose delicate e sontuose sono perdute per te e non si troveranno mai piú. 15 I mercanti di queste cose che sono stati arricchiti da lei se ne staranno lontani per timore del suo tormento, piangeranno e faranno cordoglio dicendo: 16 “Ahi! ahi! La gran città ch'era vestita di lino fino, di porpora e di scarlatto, adorna d'oro, di pietre preziose e di perle! In un attimo una ricchezza cosí grande è stata distrutta”. 17 Tutti i piloti, tutti i naviganti, i marinai e quanti trafficano sul mare se ne staranno lontano 18 e vedendo il fumo del suo incendio esclameranno: “Quale città fu mai simile a questa grande città?” 19 E si getteranno della polvere sul capo e grideranno, piangeranno e faranno cordoglio dicendo: “Ahi! ahi! La gran città nella quale tutti quelli che avevano navi in mare si erano arricchiti con la sua opulenza! In un attimo è stata ridotta a un deserto.
20 (C)«“Rallègrati, o cielo, per la sua rovina! E voi, santi, *apostoli e *profeti, rallegratevi perché Dio, giudicandola, vi ha reso giustizia”».
21 Poi un potente angelo sollevò una pietra grossa come una grande *macina, e la gettò nel mare dicendo: «Cosí, con violenza, sarà precipitata Babilonia, la gran città, e non sarà piú trovata. 22 In te non si udranno piú le armonie degli arpisti né dei musicisti né dei flautisti né dei sonatori di tromba; né sarà piú trovato in te artefice di qualunque arte, e non si udrà piú in te rumore di macina. 23 In te non brillerà piú luce di lampada, e non si udrà piú in te voce di sposo e di sposa; perché i tuoi mercanti erano i príncipi della terra e perché tutte le nazioni sono state sedotte dalle tue *magie. 24 In lei è stato trovato il sangue dei profeti e dei santi e di tutti quelli che sono stati uccisi sulla terra».

The Fall of Babylon the Great
18 After(A) these things I saw another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, (B)and the earth was illuminated with his glory. 2 And he cried [a]mightily with a loud voice, saying, (C)“Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and (D)has become a dwelling place of demons, a prison for every foul spirit, and (E)a cage for every unclean and hated bird! 3 For all the nations (F)have drunk of the wine of the wrath of her fornication, the kings of the earth have committed fornication with her, (G)and the merchants of the earth have become rich through the [b]abundance of her luxury.”
4 And I heard another voice from heaven saying, (H)“Come out of her, my people, lest you share in her sins, and lest you receive of her plagues. 5 (I)For her sins [c]have reached to heaven, and (J)God has remembered her iniquities. 6 (K)Render to her just as she rendered [d]to you, and repay her double according to her works; (L)in the cup which she has mixed, (M)mix double for her. 7 (N)In the measure that she glorified herself and lived [e]luxuriously, in the same measure give her torment and sorrow; for she says in her heart, ‘I sit as (O)queen, and am no widow, and will not see sorrow.’ 8 Therefore her plagues will come (P)in one day—death and mourning and famine. And (Q)she will be utterly burned with fire, (R)for strong is the Lord God who [f]judges her.
The World Mourns Babylon’s Fall
9 (S)“The kings of the earth who committed fornication and lived luxuriously with her (T)will weep and lament for her, (U)when they see the smoke of her burning, 10 standing at a distance for fear of her torment, saying, (V)‘Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! (W)For in one hour your judgment has come.’
11 “And (X)the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, for no one buys their merchandise anymore: 12 (Y)merchandise of gold and silver, precious stones and pearls, fine linen and purple, silk and scarlet, every kind of citron wood, every kind of object of ivory, every kind of object of most precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble; 13 and cinnamon and incense, fragrant oil and frankincense, wine and oil, fine flour and wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and bodies and (Z)souls of men. 14 The fruit that your soul longed for has gone from you, and all the things which are rich and splendid have [g]gone from you, and you shall find them no more at all. 15 The merchants of these things, who became rich by her, will stand at a distance for fear of her torment, weeping and wailing, 16 and saying, ‘Alas, alas, (AA)that great city (AB)that was clothed in fine linen, purple, and scarlet, and adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls! 17 (AC)For in one hour such great riches [h]came to nothing.’ (AD)Every shipmaster, all who travel by ship, sailors, and as many as trade on the sea, stood at a distance 18 (AE)and cried out when they saw the smoke of her burning, saying, (AF)‘What is like this great city?’

Finality of Babylon’s Fall
21 Then a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, (AK)“Thus with violence the great city Babylon shall be thrown down, and (AL)shall not be found anymore. 22 (AM)The sound of harpists, musicians, flutists, and trumpeters shall not be heard in you anymore. No craftsman of any craft shall be found in you anymore, and the sound of a millstone shall not be heard in you anymore. 23 (AN)The light of a lamp shall not shine in you anymore, (AO)and the voice of bridegroom and bride shall not be heard in you anymore. For (AP)your merchants were the great men of the earth, (AQ)for by your sorcery all the nations were deceived. 24 And (AR)in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who (AS)were slain on the earth.”
