Chapter 16
The Seven Bowls.[a] 1 I heard a loud voice speaking from the temple to the seven angels, “Go and pour out the seven bowls of God’s fury upon the earth.”
2 The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the earth. Festering and ugly sores broke out on those who had the mark of the beast or worshiped its image.[b]
3 [c]The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea. The sea turned to blood like that from a corpse; every creature living in the sea died.
4 The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water. These also turned to blood.(A) 5 Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:
“You are just, O Holy One,
who are and who were,
in passing this sentence.(B)
6 For they have shed the blood of the holy ones and the prophets,
and you [have] given them blood to drink;
it is what they deserve.”(C)
7 Then I heard the altar cry out,
“Yes, Lord God almighty,
your judgments are true and just.”(D)
8 The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun. It was given the power to burn people with fire. 9 People were burned by the scorching heat and blasphemed the name of God who had power over these plagues, but they did not repent or give him glory.(E)
10 (F)The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast.[d] Its kingdom was plunged into darkness, and people bit their tongues in pain 11 and blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their works.(G)
12 The sixth angel emptied his bowl on the great river Euphrates. Its water was dried up to prepare the way for the kings of the East.[e] 13 I saw three unclean spirits like frogs[f] come from the mouth of the dragon, from the mouth of the beast, and from the mouth of the false prophet.(H) 14 These were demonic spirits who performed signs. They went out to the kings of the whole world to assemble them for the battle on the great day of God the almighty.(I) 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief.”[g] Blessed is the one who watches and keeps his clothes ready, so that he may not go naked and people see him exposed.)(J) 16 They then assembled the kings in the place that is named Armageddon[h] in Hebrew.
17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. A loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, “It is done.”(K) 18 Then there were lightning flashes, rumblings, and peals of thunder, and a great earthquake. It was such a violent earthquake that there has never been one like it since the human race began on earth.(L) 19 The great city[i] was split into three parts, and the gentile cities fell. But God remembered great Babylon, giving it the cup filled with the wine of his fury and wrath. 20 [j]Every island fled, and mountains disappeared. 21 Large hailstones like huge weights came down from the sky on people, and they blasphemed God for the plague of hail because this plague was so severe.(M)

- 16:2 Like the sixth Egyptian plague (Ex 9:8–11).
- 16:3–4 Like the first Egyptian plague (Ex 7:20–21). The same woe followed the blowing of the second trumpet (Rev 8:8–9).
- 16:10 The throne of the beast: symbol of the forces of evil. Darkness: like the ninth Egyptian plague (Ex 10:21–23); cf. Rev 9:2.
- 16:12 The kings of the East: Parthians; see notes on Rev 6:2 and Rev 17:12–13. East: literally, “rising of the sun,” as in Rev 7:2.
- 16:13 Frogs: possibly an allusion to the second Egyptian plague (Ex 7:26–8:11). The false prophet: identified with the two-horned second beast (Rev 13:11–18 and the note there).
- 16:15 Like a thief: as in Rev 3:3 (cf. Mt 24:42–44; 1 Thes 5:2). Blessed: see note on Rev 1:3.
- 16:16 Armageddon: in Hebrew, this means “Mountain of Megiddo.” Since Megiddo was the scene of many decisive battles in antiquity (Jgs 5:19–20; 2 Kgs 9:27; 2 Chr 35:20–24), the town became the symbol of the final disastrous rout of the forces of evil.
- 16:19 The great city: Rome and the empire.
- 16:20–21 See note on Rev 6:12–14. Hailstones: as in the seventh Egyptian plague (Ex 9:23–24); cf. Rev 8:7. Like huge weights: literally, “weighing a talent,” about one hundred pounds.

16 Luego, oí una fuerte voz que venía del templo y les decía a los siete ángeles: «Vayan y derramen sobre la tierra las siete copas de la ira de Dios».
2 Entonces, el primer ángel fue y vació su copa sobre la tierra. A todos los que tenían la marca de la bestia y que adoraban su imagen les salieron llagas terribles y muy dolorosas.
3 Después, el segundo ángel vació su copa sobre el mar. El agua se convirtió en sangre como de muerto, y todos los seres del mar murieron.
4 El tercer ángel vació su copa sobre los ríos y los manantiales, y se convirtieron en sangre. 5 Entonces, oí al ángel de las aguas que le decía a Dios:
«Tú eres el que es y ha sido siempre.
Tú eres el Santo y eres justo al hacer estos juicios.
6 Ellos derramaron la sangre de tu pueblo santo y de tus profetas.
Ahora les diste sangre para que bebieran.
Eso es lo que merecen».
7 Oí también que el altar decía:
«Sí, Señor, Dios Todopoderoso,
tus juicios son correctos y justos».
8 Después, el cuarto ángel vació su copa sobre el sol, y el sol recibió el poder de quemar a la gente con fuego. 9 Los seres humanos sufrieron graves quemaduras, pero no cambiaron su forma de pensar ni de vivir. No honraron a Dios, quien había mandado esas plagas, sino que maldijeron su nombre.
10 El quinto ángel vació su copa sobre el trono de la bestia y su reino se oscureció. La gente se mordía la lengua de dolor. 11 Pero no sintieron remordimiento por sus pecados ni dejaron de hacer maldades, sino que por sus dolores y sus llagas maldijeron al Dios del cielo.
12 Luego, el sexto ángel vació su copa sobre el gran río Éufrates y el agua del río se secó. Así se preparó el camino a los reyes que venían del oriente. 13 Después, vi a tres espíritus malos que parecían ranas. Salieron de la boca del dragón, de la bestia y del falso profeta. 14 Estos eran espíritus de demonios que tenían el poder de hacer milagros. Salían a reunir a los reyes del mundo entero para la batalla del gran día del Dios Todopoderoso.
15 «Escuchen, voy a llegar de sorpresa como un ladrón. Afortunado el que se mantenga despierto y vestido, pues no tendrá que salir desnudo sintiendo vergüenza de que lo vean así».
16 Entonces, los espíritus malos reunieron a los reyes en un lugar que en hebreo se llama Armagedón[a].
17 El séptimo ángel vació su copa en el aire, y del templo salió una fuerte voz desde el trono que decía: «¡Todo se acabó!» 18 Después hubo rayos, ruidos, truenos y un gran terremoto, el peor de todos desde que el hombre apareció en la tierra. 19 La gran ciudad se partió en tres y se destruyeron las ciudades de las naciones. Dios no se olvidó de castigar a la gran Babilonia y le dio la copa llena del vino de su terrible ira. 20 Todas las islas desaparecieron y no quedó ninguna montaña. 21 Sobre la gente cayó del cielo granizo que pesaba cerca de 40 kilos[b]. First Bowl: Loathsome Sores
2 So the first went and poured out his bowl (C)upon the earth, and a [b]foul and (D)loathsome sore came upon the men (E)who had the mark of the beast and those (F)who worshiped his image.
Second Bowl: The Sea Turns to Blood
3 Then the second angel poured out his bowl (G)on the sea, and (H)it became blood as of a dead man; (I)and every living creature in the sea died.
Third Bowl: The Waters Turn to Blood
4 Then the third angel poured out his bowl (J)on the rivers and springs of water, (K)and they became blood. 5 And I heard the angel of the waters saying:
(L)“You are righteous, [c]O Lord,
The One (M)who is and who [d]was and who is to be,
Because You have judged these things.
6 For (N)they have shed the blood (O)of saints and prophets,
(P)And You have given them blood to drink.
[e]For it is their just due.”
7 And I heard [f]another from the altar saying, “Even so, (Q)Lord God Almighty, (R)true and righteous are Your judgments.”
Fourth Bowl: Men Are Scorched
8 Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl (S)on the sun, (T)and power was given to him to scorch men with fire. 9 And men were scorched with great heat, and they (U)blasphemed the name of God who has power over these plagues; (V)and they did not repent (W)and give Him glory.
Fifth Bowl: Darkness and Pain
10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl (X)on the throne of the beast, (Y)and his kingdom became full of darkness; (Z)and they gnawed their tongues because of the pain. 11 They blasphemed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, and did not repent of their deeds.
Sixth Bowl: Euphrates Dried Up
12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl (AA)on the great river Euphrates, (AB)and its water was dried up, (AC)so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared. 13 And I saw three unclean (AD)spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of (AE)the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of (AF)the false prophet. 14 For they are spirits of demons, (AG)performing signs, which go out to the kings [g]of the earth and of (AH)the whole world, to gather them to (AI)the battle of that great day of God Almighty.
15 (AJ)“Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps his garments, (AK)lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
16 (AL)And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, [h]Armageddon.
Seventh Bowl: The Earth Utterly Shaken
17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, (AM)“It is done!” 18 And (AN)there were noises and thunderings and lightnings; (AO)and there was a great earthquake, such a mighty and great earthquake (AP)as had not occurred since men were on the earth. 19 Now (AQ)the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And (AR)great Babylon (AS)was remembered before God, (AT)to give her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath. 20 Then (AU)every island fled away, and the mountains were not found. 21 And great hail from heaven fell upon men, each hailstone about the weight of a talent. Men blasphemed God because of the plague of the hail, since that plague was exceedingly great.
