The Woman, Israel

12 A great (A)sign appeared (B)in heaven: (C)a woman (D)clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; and she was pregnant and she *(E)cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth.

The Red Dragon, Satan

Then (F)another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red (G)dragon having (H)seven heads and (I)ten horns, and on his heads were (J)seven crowns. And his tail *swept away a (K)third of the stars of heaven and (L)hurled them to the earth. And the (M)dragon stood before the woman who was about to give birth, so that when she gave birth (N)he might devour her Child.

The Male Child, Christ

And (O)she gave birth to a Son, a male, who is going to [a](P)rule all the [b]nations with a rod of iron; and her Child was (Q)caught up to God and to His throne. Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she *had a place prepared by God, so that there [c]she would be nourished for (R)1,260 days.

The Angel, Michael

And there was war in heaven, (S)Michael and his angels waging war with the (T)dragon. The dragon and (U)his angels waged war, and they did not prevail, and there was no longer a place found for them in heaven. And the great (V)dragon was thrown down, the (W)serpent of old who is called the devil and (X)Satan, who (Y)deceives the whole [d]world; he was (Z)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 Then I heard (AA)a loud voice in heaven, saying,

“Now the (AB)salvation, and the power, and the (AC)kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the (AD)accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down, the one who accuses them before our God day and night. 11 And they (AE)overcame him because of (AF)the blood of the Lamb and because of (AG)the word of their testimony, and they (AH)did not love their life even [e]when faced with death. 12 For this reason, (AI)rejoice, you heavens and (AJ)you who dwell in them. (AK)Woe to the earth and the sea, because (AL)the devil has come down to you with great wrath, knowing that he has only (AM)a short time.”

13 And when the (AN)dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted (AO)the woman who gave birth to the male Child. 14 But the (AP)two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly (AQ)into the wilderness to her place, where she *was nourished for (AR)a time, times, and half a time, away from the presence of the serpent. 15 And the (AS)serpent hurled water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 [f]But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon had hurled out of his mouth. 17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to (AT)make war with the rest of her [g](AU)children, who (AV)keep the commandments of God and (AW)hold to the testimony of Jesus.

The Beast from the Sea

13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [h]seashore.

Then I saw a (AX)beast coming up out of the sea, having (AY)ten horns and (AZ)seven heads, and on his horns were (BA)ten crowns, and on his heads were (BB)blasphemous names. And the beast that I saw was (BC)like a leopard, and his feet were like those of (BD)a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of (BE)a lion. And the (BF)dragon gave him his power and his (BG)throne, and great authority. I saw one of his heads as if it had been [i]fatally wounded, and his (BH)fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth (BI)was amazed and followed after the beast; they worshiped the (BJ)dragon because he (BK)gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, “(BL)Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?” A mouth was given to him (BM)speaking [j]arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for (BN)forty-two months was given to him. And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, (BO)those who dwell in heaven.

It was also given to him to (BP)make war with the [k]saints and to overcome them, and authority was given to him over (BQ)every tribe, people, language, and nation. All who (BR)live on the earth will worship him, everyone (BS)whose name has not been [l]written (BT)since the foundation of the world in the (BU)book of life of (BV)the Lamb who has been slaughtered. (BW)If anyone has an ear, let him hear. 10 (BX)If anyone [m]is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; (BY)if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is (BZ)the [n]perseverance and the faith of the [o]saints.

The Beast from the Earth

11 Then (CA)I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had (CB)two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a (CC)dragon. 12 He (CD)exercises all the authority of the first beast [p](CE)in his presence. And he makes (CF)the earth and those who live on it (CG)worship the first beast, whose (CH)fatal wound was healed. 13 He (CI)performs great signs, so that he even makes (CJ)fire come down out of the sky to the earth in the presence of people. 14 And he (CK)deceives (CL)those who live on the earth because of (CM)the signs which it was given him to perform [q](CN)in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image to the beast who *had the (CO)wound of the sword and has come to life. 15 And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even [r]speak and cause (CP)all who do not (CQ)worship the image of the beast to be killed. 16 And he causes all, (CR)the small and the great, the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, [s]to be given a (CS)mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, 17 and he decrees that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the (CT)mark, either (CU)the name of the beast or (CV)the number of his name. 18 (CW)Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that (CX)of a [t]man; and his number is [u]six hundred and sixty-six.

The Lamb and the 144,000 on Mount Zion

14 Then I looked, and behold, (CY)the Lamb was standing on (CZ)Mount Zion, and with Him (DA)144,000 who had (DB)His name and the (DC)name of His Father written (DD)on their foreheads. And I heard a voice from heaven, like (DE)the sound of many waters and like the (DF)sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of (DG)harpists playing on their harps. And they *sang [v](DH)a new song before the throne and before the (DI)four living creatures and the (DJ)elders; and (DK)no one was able to learn the song except the (DL)144,000 who had been (DM)purchased from the earth. (DN)These are the ones who have not defiled themselves with women, for they are celibate. These are the ones who (DO)follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been (DP)purchased from mankind (DQ)as first fruits to God and to the Lamb. And (DR)no lie was found in their mouths; they are (DS)blameless.

Vision of the Angel with the Gospel

And I saw another angel flying in (DT)midheaven with (DU)an eternal gospel to preach to (DV)those who [w]live on the earth, and to (DW)every nation, tribe, language, and people; and he said with a loud voice, “(DX)Fear God and (DY)give Him glory, because the hour of His judgment has come; worship Him who (DZ)made the heaven and the earth, and sea and (EA)springs of waters.”

And another angel, a second one, followed, saying, “[x](EB)Fallen, fallen is (EC)Babylon the great, she who has (ED)made all the nations drink of the (EE)wine of the [y]passion of her sexual immorality.”

Doom for Worshipers of the Beast

Then another angel, a third one, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone (EF)worships the beast and his (EG)image, and receives a (EH)mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 he also will drink of the (EI)wine of the wrath of God, which is mixed [z]in full strength (EJ)in the cup of His anger; and he will be tormented with (EK)fire and [aa]brimstone in the presence of the (EL)holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 And the (EM)smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; (EN)they have no rest day and night, those who (EO)worship the beast and his (EP)image, and [ab]whoever receives the (EQ)mark of his name.” 12 Here is (ER)the [ac]perseverance of the [ad]saints who (ES)keep the commandments of God and [ae](ET)their faith in Jesus.

13 And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write: ‘(EU)Blessed are the dead who (EV)die in the Lord from now on!’” “Yes,” (EW)says the Spirit, “so that they may (EX)rest from their labors, for their (EY)deeds follow with them.”

The Harvest

14 Then I looked, and behold, a (EZ)white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one (FA)like [af]a son of man, with a golden (FB)crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand. 15 And another angel (FC)came out of the [ag]temple, calling out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, “[ah](FD)Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the (FE)harvest of the earth [ai]is ripe.” 16 Then He who sat on the cloud [aj]swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

17 And another angel (FF)came out of the [ak]temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, (FG)the one who has power over fire, came out from (FH)the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “[al](FI)Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters [am]from the vine of the earth, (FJ)because her grapes are ripe.” 19 So the angel [an]swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into (FK)the great wine press of the wrath of God. 20 And (FL)the wine press was trampled (FM)outside the city, and (FN)blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, [ao]for a distance of [ap]1,600 stadia.

A Scene of Heaven

15 Then I saw (FO)another sign in heaven, great and marvelous, (FP)seven angels who had (FQ)seven plagues, which are (FR)the last, because in them the wrath of God is finished.

And I saw something like a (FS)sea of glass mixed with fire, and those who (FT)were victorious [aq]over the (FU)beast and (FV)his image and the (FW)number of his name, standing on the (FX)sea of glass, holding (FY)harps of God. And they *sang the (FZ)song of Moses, (GA)the bond-servant of God, and the (GB)song of the Lamb, saying,

(GC)Great and marvelous are Your works,
(GD)Lord God, the Almighty;
Righteous and true are Your ways,
(GE)King of the [ar]nations!
(GF)Who will not fear You, Lord, and glorify Your name?
For You alone are holy;
For (GG)all the nations will come and worship before You,
For Your [as](GH)righteous acts have been revealed.”

After these things I looked, and (GI)the [at]temple of the (GJ)tabernacle of testimony in heaven was opened, and the (GK)seven angels who had the seven plagues (GL)came out of the [au]temple, clothed in [av]linen, clean and bright, and (GM)their chests wrapped with golden sashes. And one of the (GN)four living creatures gave the (GO)seven angels seven (GP)golden bowls full of the (GQ)wrath of God, who (GR)lives forever and ever. And the [aw]temple was filled with (GS)smoke from the glory of God and from His power; and no one was able to enter the [ax]temple until the seven plagues of the seven angels were finished.

The Bowls of Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from (GT)the [ay]temple, saying to the (GU)seven angels, “Go and (GV)pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl (GW)on the earth; and a harmful and painful (GX)sore [az]afflicted the people (GY)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The second angel poured out his bowl (GZ)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living [ba]thing in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (HA)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (HB)became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “(HC)Righteous are You, (HD)the One who is and who was, O (HE)Holy One, because You (HF)judged these things; for they poured out (HG)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (HH)blood to drink. They [bb]deserve it.” And I heard (HI)the altar saying, “Yes, (HJ)Lord God, the Almighty, (HK)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (HL)the sun, (HM)and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with [bc]fierce heat; and they (HN)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (HO)did not repent so as to (HP)give Him glory.

10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (HQ)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (HR)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they (HS)blasphemed the (HT)God of heaven because of their pain and their (HU)sores; and they (HV)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (HW)great river, the Euphrates; and (HX)its water was dried up, so that (HY)the way would be prepared for the kings (HZ)from the [bd]east.

Har-Magedon (Armageddon)

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (IA)dragon, and out of the mouth of the (IB)beast, and out of the mouth of the (IC)false prophet, three (ID)unclean spirits like (IE)frogs; 14 for they are (IF)spirits of demons, (IG)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (IH)entire [be]world, to (II)gather them together for the war of the (IJ)great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (IK)I am coming like a thief. (IL)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (IM)so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.”) 16 And they (IN)gathered them together to the place which (IO)in Hebrew is called (IP)Har-Magedon.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (IQ)the air, and a (IR)loud voice came out of the [bf](IS)temple from the throne, saying, “(IT)It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of (IU)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (IV)a great earthquake, (IW)such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. 19 (IX)The great city [bg]was split into three parts, and the cities of the [bh]nations fell. (IY)Babylon the great was (IZ)remembered in the sight of God, to give her (JA)the cup of the wine of [bi]His fierce wrath. 20 And (JB)every island fled, and no mountains were found. 21 And (JC)huge [bj]hailstones, weighing about [bk]a talent each, *came down from heaven upon people; and people (JD)blasphemed God because of the (JE)plague of the hail, because [bl]the hailstone plague *was extremely [bm]severe.

The Doom of Babylon

17 (JF)Then one of the (JG)seven angels who had the (JH)seven bowls came and spoke with me, saying, “Come here, I will show you (JI)the judgment of the (JJ)great prostitute who (JK)sits on many waters, with whom (JL)the kings of the earth committed acts of sexual immorality, and (JM)those who live on the earth (JN)became drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.” And (JO)he carried me away [bn](JP)in the Spirit (JQ)into a wilderness; and I saw a woman sitting on a (JR)scarlet beast, full of (JS)blasphemous names, having (JT)seven heads and ten horns. The woman (JU)was clothed in purple and scarlet, and [bo]adorned with gold, precious [bp]stones, and pearls, holding in her hand (JV)a gold cup full of abominations and of the unclean things of her sexual immorality, and on her forehead a name was written, [bq]a (JW)mystery: “(JX)BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF (JY)THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH.” And I saw the woman drunk with (JZ)the blood of the [br]saints, and with the blood of the witnesses of Jesus. When I saw her, I wondered [bs]greatly. And the angel said to me, “Why [bt]do you wonder? I will tell you the (KA)mystery of the woman and of the beast that carries her, which has the (KB)seven heads and the ten horns.

(KC)The beast that you saw (KD)was, and is not, and is about to (KE)come up out of the (KF)abyss and [bu](KG)go to destruction. And (KH)those who live on the earth, (KI)whose names have not been written in the book of life (KJ)from the foundation of the world, will (KK)wonder when they see the beast, that he was, and is not, and will [bv]come. (KL)Here is the mind which has wisdom. The (KM)seven heads are seven mountains upon which the woman sits, 10 and they are seven (KN)kings; five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; and when he comes, he must remain a little while. 11 The beast which (KO)was, and is not, is himself also an eighth and is one of the seven, and he (KP)goes to destruction. 12 The (KQ)ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but they receive authority as kings with the beast (KR)for one hour. 13 These have (KS)one [bw]purpose, and they give their power and authority to the beast.

Victory for the Lamb

14 These will wage (KT)war against the Lamb, and the Lamb will (KU)overcome them because He is (KV)Lord of lords and (KW)King of kings; and (KX)those who are with Him are the (KY)called and chosen and faithful.”

15 And he *said to me, “The (KZ)waters which you saw where the prostitute sits are (LA)peoples and multitudes, and nations and languages. 16 And the (LB)ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the prostitute and will make her (LC)desolate and (LD)naked, and will (LE)eat her flesh and will (LF)burn her up with fire. 17 For (LG)God has put it in their hearts to execute His [bx]purpose [by]by (LH)having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the (LI)words of God will be fulfilled. 18 The woman whom you saw is (LJ)the great city, which [bz]reigns over the kings of the earth.”

Babylon Is Fallen

18 After these things I saw another (LK)angel (LL)coming down from heaven, having great authority, and the earth was (LM)illuminated from his glory. And he cried out with a mighty voice, saying, “[ca](LN)Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great! She (LO)has become a dwelling place of demons and a [cb]prison of every (LP)unclean spirit, and a [cc]prison of every unclean and hateful bird. For all the nations have fallen because of the (LQ)wine of the passion of her sexual immorality, and (LR)the kings of the earth have committed acts of sexual immorality with her, and the (LS)merchants of the earth have become rich from the [cd]excessive wealth of her [ce](LT)luxury.”

I heard another voice from heaven, saying, “(LU)Come out of her, my people, so that you will not participate in her sins and receive any of her plagues; for her sins have [cf](LV)piled up as high as heaven, and God has (LW)remembered her offenses. (LX)Pay her back even as she has paid, and [cg]give back to her double according to her deeds; in the (LY)cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. (LZ)To the extent that she glorified herself and (MA)lived luxuriously, to the same extent give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘(MB)I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ For this reason (MC)in one day her plagues will come, [ch]plague and mourning and famine, and she will be (MD)burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her (ME)is strong.

Grief over Babylon

“And (MF)the kings of the earth, who committed acts of sexual immorality and (MG)lived luxuriously with her, will (MH)weep and mourn over her when they (MI)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (MJ)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(MK)Woe, woe, (ML)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (MM)one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the (MN)merchants of the earth (MO)weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargo any more— 12 cargo of (MP)gold, silver, precious [ci]stones, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; every kind of citron wood, every article of ivory, and every article made from very valuable wood, [cj]bronze, iron, and marble; 13 cinnamon, [ck]spice, incense, perfume, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, and cargo of horses, carriages, [cl]slaves, and (MQ)human lives. 14 The fruit [cm]you long for has left you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and people will no longer find them. 15 The (MR)merchants of (MS)these things, who became rich from her, will (MT)stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘(MU)Woe, woe, (MV)the great city, she who (MW)was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and [cn]adorned with gold, precious [co]stones, and pearls; 17 for in (MX)one hour such great wealth has been laid (MY)waste!’ And (MZ)every shipmaster and every [cp]passenger and sailor, and all who [cq]make their living by the sea, (NA)stood at a distance, 18 and were (NB)crying out as they (NC)saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘(ND)What city is like (NE)the great city?’ 19 And they threw (NF)dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘(NG)Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea (NH)became rich from her prosperity, for in (NI)one hour she has been laid (NJ)waste!’ 20 (NK)Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [cr]saints and (NL)apostles and prophets, because (NM)God has [cs]pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then [ct]a (NN)strong angel (NO)picked up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, (NP)the great city, be thrown down with violence, and (NQ)will never be found again. 22 And (NR)the sound of harpists, musicians, flute players, and trumpeters will never be heard in you again; and no craftsman of any craft will ever be found in you again; and the (NS)sound of a mill will never be heard in you again; 23 and the light of a lamp will never shine in you again; and the (NT)voice of the groom and bride will never be heard in you again; for your (NU)merchants were the powerful people of the earth, because all the nations were deceived (NV)by your witchcraft. 24 And in her was found the (NW)blood of prophets and of [cu]saints, and of (NX)all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”

The Woman and the Dragon

12 Then I witnessed in heaven an event of great significance. I saw a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon beneath her feet, and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant, and she cried out because of her labor pains and the agony of giving birth.

Then I witnessed in heaven another significant event. I saw a large red dragon with seven heads and ten horns, with seven crowns on his heads. His tail swept away one-third of the stars in the sky, and he threw them to the earth. He stood in front of the woman as she was about to give birth, ready to devour her baby as soon as it was born.

She gave birth to a son who was to rule all nations with an iron rod. And her child was snatched away from the dragon and was caught up to God and to his throne. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where God had prepared a place to care for her for 1,260 days.

Then there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. And the dragon lost the battle, and he and his angels were forced out of heaven. This great dragon—the ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, the one deceiving the whole world—was thrown down to the earth with all his angels.

10 Then I heard a loud voice shouting across the heavens,

“It has come at last—
    salvation and power
and the Kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Christ.[a]
For the accuser of our brothers and sisters[b]
has been thrown down to earth—
the one who accuses them
before our God day and night.
11 And they have defeated him by the blood of the Lamb
    and by their testimony.
And they did not love their lives so much
that they were afraid to die.
12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens!
And you who live in the heavens, rejoice!
But terror will come on the earth and the sea,
for the devil has come down to you in great anger,
knowing that he has little time.”

13 When the dragon realized that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 But she was given two wings like those of a great eagle so she could fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness. There she would be cared for and protected from the dragon[c] for a time, times, and half a time.

15 Then the dragon tried to drown the woman with a flood of water that flowed from his mouth. 16 But the earth helped her by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that gushed out from the mouth of the dragon. 17 And the dragon was angry at the woman and declared war against the rest of her children—all who keep God’s commandments and maintain their testimony for Jesus.

18 Then the dragon took his stand[d] on the shore beside the sea.

The Beast out of the Sea

13 Then I saw a beast rising up out of the sea. It had seven heads and ten horns, with ten crowns on its horns. And written on each head were names that blasphemed God. This beast looked like a leopard, but it had the feet of a bear and the mouth of a lion! And the dragon gave the beast his own power and throne and great authority.

I saw that one of the heads of the beast seemed wounded beyond recovery—but the fatal wound was healed! The whole world marveled at this miracle and gave allegiance to the beast. They worshiped the dragon for giving the beast such power, and they also worshiped the beast. “Who is as great as the beast?” they exclaimed. “Who is able to fight against him?”

Then the beast was allowed to speak great blasphemies against God. And he was given authority to do whatever he wanted for forty-two months. And he spoke terrible words of blasphemy against God, slandering his name and his dwelling—that is, those who dwell in heaven.[e] And the beast was allowed to wage war against God’s holy people and to conquer them. And he was given authority to rule over every tribe and people and language and nation. And all the people who belong to this world worshiped the beast. They are the ones whose names were not written in the Book of Life that belongs to the Lamb who was slaughtered before the world was made.[f]

Anyone with ears to hear
    should listen and understand.
10 Anyone who is destined for prison
    will be taken to prison.
Anyone destined to die by the sword
    will die by the sword.

This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently and remain faithful.

The Beast out of the Earth

11 Then I saw another beast come up out of the earth. He had two horns like those of a lamb, but he spoke with the voice of a dragon. 12 He exercised all the authority of the first beast. And he required all the earth and its people to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. 13 He did astounding miracles, even making fire flash down to earth from the sky while everyone was watching. 14 And with all the miracles he was allowed to perform on behalf of the first beast, he deceived all the people who belong to this world. He ordered the people to make a great statue of the first beast, who was fatally wounded and then came back to life. 15 He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die.

16 He required everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to be given a mark on the right hand or on the forehead. 17 And no one could buy or sell anything without that mark, which was either the name of the beast or the number representing his name. 18 Wisdom is needed here. Let the one with understanding solve the meaning of the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man.[g] His number is 666.[h]

The Lamb and the 144,000

14 Then I saw the Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with him were 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads. And I heard a sound from heaven like the roar of mighty ocean waves or the rolling of loud thunder. It was like the sound of many harpists playing together.

This great choir sang a wonderful new song in front of the throne of God and before the four living beings and the twenty-four elders. No one could learn this song except the 144,000 who had been redeemed from the earth. They have kept themselves as pure as virgins,[i] following the Lamb wherever he goes. They have been purchased from among the people on the earth as a special offering[j] to God and to the Lamb. They have told no lies; they are without blame.

The Three Angels

And I saw another angel flying through the sky, carrying the eternal Good News to proclaim to the people who belong to this world—to every nation, tribe, language, and people. “Fear God,” he shouted. “Give glory to him. For the time has come when he will sit as judge. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea, and all the springs of water.”

Then another angel followed him through the sky, shouting, “Babylon is fallen—that great city is fallen—because she made all the nations of the world drink the wine of her passionate immorality.”

Then a third angel followed them, shouting, “Anyone who worships the beast and his statue or who accepts his mark on the forehead or on the hand 10 must drink the wine of God’s anger. It has been poured full strength into God’s cup of wrath. And they will be tormented with fire and burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb. 11 The smoke of their torment will rise forever and ever, and they will have no relief day or night, for they have worshiped the beast and his statue and have accepted the mark of his name.”

12 This means that God’s holy people must endure persecution patiently, obeying his commands and maintaining their faith in Jesus.

13 And I heard a voice from heaven saying, “Write this down: Blessed are those who die in the Lord from now on. Yes, says the Spirit, they are blessed indeed, for they will rest from their hard work; for their good deeds follow them!”

The Harvest of the Earth

14 Then I saw a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was someone like the Son of Man.[k] He had a gold crown on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand.

15 Then another angel came from the Temple and shouted to the one sitting on the cloud, “Swing the sickle, for the time of harvest has come; the crop on earth is ripe.” 16 So the one sitting on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the whole earth was harvested.

17 After that, another angel came from the Temple in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle. 18 Then another angel, who had power to destroy with fire, came from the altar. He shouted to the angel with the sharp sickle, “Swing your sickle now to gather the clusters of grapes from the vines of the earth, for they are ripe for judgment.” 19 So the angel swung his sickle over the earth and loaded the grapes into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20 The grapes were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed from the winepress in a stream about 180 miles[l] long and as high as a horse’s bridle.

The Song of Moses and of the Lamb

15 Then I saw in heaven another marvelous event of great significance. Seven angels were holding the seven last plagues, which would bring God’s wrath to completion. I saw before me what seemed to be a glass sea mixed with fire. And on it stood all the people who had been victorious over the beast and his statue and the number representing his name. They were all holding harps that God had given them. And they were singing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb:

“Great and marvelous are your works,
    O Lord God, the Almighty.
Just and true are your ways,
    O King of the nations.[m]
Who will not fear you, Lord,
    and glorify your name?
    For you alone are holy.
All nations will come and worship before you,
for your righteous deeds have been revealed.”

The Seven Bowls of the Seven Plagues

Then I looked and saw that the Temple in heaven, God’s Tabernacle, was thrown wide open. The seven angels who were holding the seven plagues came out of the Temple. They were clothed in spotless white linen[n] with gold sashes across their chests. Then one of the four living beings handed each of the seven angels a gold bowl filled with the wrath of God, who lives forever and ever. The Temple was filled with smoke from God’s glory and power. No one could enter the Temple until the seven angels had completed pouring out the seven plagues.

16 Then I heard a mighty voice from the Temple say to the seven angels, “Go your ways and pour out on the earth the seven bowls containing God’s wrath.”

So the first angel left the Temple and poured out his bowl on the earth, and horrible, malignant sores broke out on everyone who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his statue.

Then the second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it became like the blood of a corpse. And everything in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs, and they became blood. And I heard the angel who had authority over all water saying,

“You are just, O Holy One, who is and who always was,
because you have sent these judgments.
Since they shed the blood
of your holy people and your prophets,
you have given them blood to drink.
    It is their just reward.”

And I heard a voice from the altar,[o] saying,

“Yes, O Lord God, the Almighty,
your judgments are true and just.”

Then the fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, causing it to scorch everyone with its fire. Everyone was burned by this blast of heat, and they cursed the name of God, who had control over all these plagues. They did not repent of their sins and turn to God and give him glory.

10 Then the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. His subjects ground their teeth[p] in anguish, 11 and they cursed the God of heaven for their pains and sores. But they did not repent of their evil deeds and turn to God.

12 Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great Euphrates River, and it dried up so that the kings from the east could march their armies toward the west without hindrance. 13 And I saw three evil[q] spirits that looked like frogs leap from the mouths of the dragon, the beast, and the false prophet. 14 They are demonic spirits who work miracles and go out to all the rulers of the world to gather them for battle against the Lord on that great judgment day of God the Almighty.

15 “Look, I will come as unexpectedly as a thief! Blessed are all who are watching for me, who keep their clothing ready so they will not have to walk around naked and ashamed.”

16 And the demonic spirits gathered all the rulers and their armies to a place with the Hebrew name Armageddon.[r]

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air. And a mighty shout came from the throne in the Temple, saying, “It is finished!” 18 Then the thunder crashed and rolled, and lightning flashed. And a great earthquake struck—the worst since people were placed on the earth. 19 The great city of Babylon split into three sections, and the cities of many nations fell into heaps of rubble. So God remembered all of Babylon’s sins, and he made her drink the cup that was filled with the wine of his fierce wrath. 20 And every island disappeared, and all the mountains were leveled. 21 There was a terrible hailstorm, and hailstones weighing as much as seventy-five pounds[s] fell from the sky onto the people below. They cursed God because of the terrible plague of the hailstorm.

The Great Prostitute

17 One of the seven angels who had poured out the seven bowls came over and spoke to me. “Come with me,” he said, “and I will show you the judgment that is going to come on the great prostitute, who rules over many waters. The kings of the world have committed adultery with her, and the people who belong to this world have been made drunk by the wine of her immorality.”

So the angel took me in the Spirit[t] into the wilderness. There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet beast that had seven heads and ten horns, and blasphemies against God were written all over it. The woman wore purple and scarlet clothing and beautiful jewelry made of gold and precious gems and pearls. In her hand she held a gold goblet full of obscenities and the impurities of her immorality. A mysterious name was written on her forehead: “Babylon the Great, Mother of All Prostitutes and Obscenities in the World.” I could see that she was drunk—drunk with the blood of God’s holy people who were witnesses for Jesus. I stared at her in complete amazement.

“Why are you so amazed?” the angel asked. “I will tell you the mystery of this woman and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns on which she sits. The beast you saw was once alive but isn’t now. And yet he will soon come up out of the bottomless pit[u] and go to eternal destruction. And the people who belong to this world, whose names were not written in the Book of Life before the world was made, will be amazed at the reappearance of this beast who had died.

“This calls for a mind with understanding: The seven heads of the beast represent the seven hills where the woman rules. They also represent seven kings. 10 Five kings have already fallen, the sixth now reigns, and the seventh is yet to come, but his reign will be brief.

11 “The scarlet beast that was, but is no longer, is the eighth king. He is like the other seven, and he, too, is headed for destruction. 12 The ten horns of the beast are ten kings who have not yet risen to power. They will be appointed to their kingdoms for one brief moment to reign with the beast. 13 They will all agree to give him their power and authority. 14 Together they will go to war against the Lamb, but the Lamb will defeat them because he is Lord of all lords and King of all kings. And his called and chosen and faithful ones will be with him.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters where the prostitute is ruling represent masses of people of every nation and language. 16 The scarlet beast and his ten horns all hate the prostitute. They will strip her naked, eat her flesh, and burn her remains with fire. 17 For God has put a plan into their minds, a plan that will carry out his purposes. They will agree to give their authority to the scarlet beast, and so the words of God will be fulfilled. 18 And this woman you saw in your vision represents the great city that rules over the kings of the world.”

The Fall of Babylon

18 After all this I saw another angel come down from heaven with great authority, and the earth grew bright with his splendor. He gave a mighty shout:

“Babylon is fallen—that great city is fallen!
She has become a home for demons.
She is a hideout for every foul[v] spirit,
a hideout for every foul vulture
and every foul and dreadful animal.[w]
For all the nations have fallen[x]
because of the wine of her passionate immorality.
The kings of the world
    have committed adultery with her.
Because of her desires for extravagant luxury,
the merchants of the world have grown rich.”

Then I heard another voice calling from heaven,

“Come away from her, my people.
Do not take part in her sins,
or you will be punished with her.
For her sins are piled as high as heaven,
and God remembers her evil deeds.
Do to her as she has done to others.
Double her penalty[y] for all her evil deeds.
She brewed a cup of terror for others,
so brew twice as much[z] for her.
She glorified herself and lived in luxury,
so match it now with torment and sorrow.
She boasted in her heart,
‘I am queen on my throne.
I am no helpless widow,
and I have no reason to mourn.’
Therefore, these plagues will overtake her in a single day—
    death and mourning and famine.
She will be completely consumed by fire,
for the Lord God who judges her is mighty.”

And the kings of the world who committed adultery with her and enjoyed her great luxury will mourn for her as they see the smoke rising from her charred remains. 10 They will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will cry out,

“How terrible, how terrible for you,
    O Babylon, you great city!
In a single moment
    God’s judgment came on you.”

11 The merchants of the world will weep and mourn for her, for there is no one left to buy their goods. 12 She bought great quantities of gold, silver, jewels, and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet cloth; things made of fragrant thyine wood, ivory goods, and objects made of expensive wood; and bronze, iron, and marble. 13 She also bought cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, olive oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle, sheep, horses, wagons, and bodies—that is, human slaves.

14 “The fancy things you loved so much
    are gone,” they cry.
“All your luxuries and splendor
    are gone forever,
    never to be yours again.”

15 The merchants who became wealthy by selling her these things will stand at a distance, terrified by her great torment. They will weep and cry out,

16 “How terrible, how terrible for that great city!
She was clothed in finest purple and scarlet linens,
decked out with gold and precious stones and pearls!
17 In a single moment
all the wealth of the city is gone!”

And all the captains of the merchant ships and their passengers and sailors and crews will stand at a distance. 18 They will cry out as they watch the smoke ascend, and they will say, “Where is there another city as great as this?” 19 And they will weep and throw dust on their heads to show their grief. And they will cry out,

“How terrible, how terrible for that great city!
    The shipowners became wealthy
by transporting her great wealth on the seas.
In a single moment it is all gone.”

20 Rejoice over her fate, O heaven
and people of God and apostles and prophets!
For at last God has judged her
    for your sakes.

21 Then a mighty angel picked up a boulder the size of a huge millstone. He threw it into the ocean and shouted,

“Just like this, the great city Babylon
will be thrown down with violence
and will never be found again.
22 The sound of harps, singers, flutes, and trumpets
will never be heard in you again.
No craftsmen and no trades
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of the mill
will never be heard in you again.
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The happy voices of brides and grooms
will never be heard in you again.
For your merchants were the greatest in the world,
and you deceived the nations with your sorceries.
24 In your[aa] streets flowed the blood of the prophets and of God’s holy people
and the blood of people slaughtered all over the world.”
