The Seventh Seal: Trumpets

When the Lamb broke the (A)seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour. And I saw (B)the seven angels who stand before God, and seven (C)trumpets were given to them.

(D)Another angel came and stood at the (E)altar, holding a (F)golden censer; and much (G)incense was given to him, so that he might [a]add it to the (H)prayers of all the [b]saints on the (I)golden altar which was before the throne. And (J)the smoke of the incense ascended from the angel’s hand with the prayers of the [c]saints before God. Then the angel [d]took the [e]censer and (K)filled it with the fire of the altar, and (L)hurled it to the earth; and there were (M)peals of thunder and sounds, and flashes of lightning and an (N)earthquake.

(O)And the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared themselves to sound them.

The first sounded, and there was (P)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (Q)a third of the earth was burned up, and (R)a third of the (S)trees were burned up, and all the green (T)grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great (U)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (V)a third of the (W)sea became blood, and (X)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [f]and had life, died; and a third of the (Y)ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (Z)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (AA)third of the rivers and on the (AB)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (AC)third of the waters became (AD)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (AE)third of the (AF)sun, a third of the (AG)moon, and a (AH)third of the (AI)stars were struck, so that a (AJ)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (AK)third of it, and the night in the same way.

13 Then I looked, and I heard [g]an eagle flying in (AL)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(AM)Woe, woe, woe to (AN)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (AO)three angels who are about to sound!”

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

Then the (AP)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (AQ)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (AR)key to the (AS)shaft of the abyss was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (AT)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (AU)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. Then out of the smoke came (AV)locusts [h]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (AW)scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to (AX)hurt the (AY)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (AZ)seal of God on their foreheads. And [i]they were not permitted to kill [j]anyone, but to torment for (BA)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (BB)scorpion when it [k]stings a person. And in those days (BC)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [l]will flee from them!

The [m](BD)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their (BE)teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (BF)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (BG)scorpions, and stings; and in their (BH)tails is their power to hurt people for (BI)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (BJ)abyss; his name in (BK)Hebrew is [n](BL)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [o]Apollyon.

12 (BM)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [p]a voice from the [q]four (BN)horns of the (BO)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the (BP)four angels who are bound at the (BQ)great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were (BR)released, so that they would kill a (BS)third of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was (BT)two hundred million; (BU)I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw (BV)in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of [r](BW)brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and (BX)out of their mouths *came fire and smoke and [s](BY)brimstone. 18 A (BZ)third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the (CA)fire, the smoke, and the [t]brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (CB)did not repent of (CC)the works of their hands so as not to (CD)worship demons and (CE)the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they (CF)did not repent of their murders, nor of their (CG)witchcraft, nor of their (CH)sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

The Seventh Seal and the Golden Censer

When he opened the seventh seal,(A) there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.

And I saw the seven angels(B) who stand before God, and seven trumpets were given to them.(C)

Another angel,(D) who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people,(E) on the golden altar(F) in front of the throne. The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God(G) from the angel’s hand. Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar,(H) and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder,(I) rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.(J)

The Trumpets

Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets(K) prepared to sound them.

The first angel(L) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(M) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(N) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(O)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(P) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(Q) of the sea turned into blood,(R) a third(S) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(T) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(U) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(V) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(W)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(X) of them turned dark.(Y) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(Z)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(AA) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(AB) to the inhabitants of the earth,(AC) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(AD) The star was given the key(AE) to the shaft of the Abyss.(AF) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(AG) The sun and sky were darkened(AH) by the smoke from the Abyss.(AI) And out of the smoke locusts(AJ) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(AK) of the earth. They were told not to harm(AL) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(AM) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(AN) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(AO) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(AP) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(AQ)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(AR) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(AS) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(AT) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(AU) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(AV) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(AW) whose name in Hebrew(AX) is Abaddon(AY) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(AZ)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(BA) of the golden altar that is before God.(BB) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(BC) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(BD) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(BE) to kill a third(BF) of mankind.(BG) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(BH)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(BI) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(BJ) 18 A third(BK) of mankind was killed(BL) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(BM) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(BN) of the work of their hands;(BO) they did not stop worshiping demons,(BP) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(BQ) 21 Nor did they repent(BR) of their murders, their magic arts,(BS) their sexual immorality(BT) or their thefts.

The Seventh Trumpet: Christ’s Reign Foreseen

15 Then the (A)seventh angel sounded; and there were (B)loud voices in heaven, saying,

(C)The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of (D)His [a]Christ; and (E)He will reign forever and ever.” 16 And the twenty-four elders, who (F)sit on their thrones before God, (G)fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

“We give You thanks, (H)Lord God, the Almighty, the One who is and who was, because You have taken Your great power and have begun to (I)reign. 18 And (J)the nations were enraged, and (K)Your wrath came, and (L)the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to [b]reward Your (M)bond-servants the prophets and the [c]saints and those who fear Your name, (N)the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth.”

19 And (O)the [d]temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and (P)the ark of His covenant appeared in His [e]temple, and there were flashes of (Q)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder, and an earthquake, and a (R)great [f]hailstorm.

The Bowls of Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from (A)the [a]temple, saying to the (B)seven angels, “Go and (C)pour out on the earth the seven bowls of the wrath of God.”

So the first angel went and poured out his bowl (D)on the earth; and a harmful and painful (E)sore [b]afflicted the people (F)who had the mark of the beast and who worshiped his image.

The second angel poured out his bowl (G)into the sea, and it became blood like that of a dead man; and every living [c]thing in the sea died.

Then the third angel poured out his bowl into the (H)rivers and the springs of waters; and they (I)became blood. And I heard the angel of the waters saying, “(J)Righteous are You, (K)the One who is and who was, O (L)Holy One, because You (M)judged these things; for they poured out (N)the blood of saints and prophets, and You have given them (O)blood to drink. They [d]deserve it.” And I heard (P)the altar saying, “Yes, (Q)Lord God, the Almighty, (R)true and righteous are Your judgments.”

And the fourth angel poured out his bowl upon (S)the sun, (T)and it was given power to scorch people with fire. And the people were scorched with [e]fierce heat; and they (U)blasphemed the name of God who has the power over these plagues, and they (V)did not repent so as to (W)give Him glory.

10 And the fifth angel poured out his bowl on the (X)throne of the beast, and his kingdom became (Y)darkened; and they gnawed their tongues because of pain, 11 and they (Z)blasphemed the (AA)God of heaven because of their pain and their (AB)sores; and they (AC)did not repent of their deeds.

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the (AD)great river, the Euphrates; and (AE)its water was dried up, so that (AF)the way would be prepared for the kings (AG)from the [f]east.

Har-Magedon (Armageddon)

13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the (AH)dragon, and out of the mouth of the (AI)beast, and out of the mouth of the (AJ)false prophet, three (AK)unclean spirits like (AL)frogs; 14 for they are (AM)spirits of demons, (AN)performing signs, which go out to the kings of the (AO)entire [g]world, to (AP)gather them together for the war of the (AQ)great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (AR)I am coming like a thief. (AS)Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, (AT)so that he will not walk about naked and people will not see his shame.”) 16 And they (AU)gathered them together to the place which (AV)in Hebrew is called (AW)Har-Magedon.

The Seventh Bowl of Wrath

17 Then the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon (AX)the air, and a (AY)loud voice came out of the [h](AZ)temple from the throne, saying, “(BA)It is done.” 18 And there were flashes of (BB)lightning and sounds and peals of thunder; and there was (BC)a great earthquake, (BD)such as there had not been since mankind came to be upon the earth, so great an earthquake was it, and so mighty. 19 (BE)The great city [i]was split into three parts, and the cities of the [j]nations fell. (BF)Babylon the great was (BG)remembered in the sight of God, to give her (BH)the cup of the wine of [k]His fierce wrath. 20 And (BI)every island fled, and no mountains were found. 21 And (BJ)huge [l]hailstones, weighing about [m]a talent each, *came down from heaven upon people; and people (BK)blasphemed God because of the (BL)plague of the hail, because [n]the hailstone plague *was extremely [o]severe.

The Seven Bowls of God’s Wrath

16 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple(A) saying to the seven angels,(B) “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”(C)

The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land,(D) and ugly, festering sores(E) broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.(F)

The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.(G)

The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water,(H) and they became blood.(I) Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:

“You are just in these judgments,(J) O Holy One,(K)
you who are and who were;(L)
for they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,(M)
and you have given them blood to drink(N) as they deserve.”

And I heard the altar(O) respond:

“Yes, Lord God Almighty,(P)
true and just are your judgments.”(Q)

The fourth angel(R) poured out his bowl on the sun,(S) and the sun was allowed to scorch people with fire.(T) They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God,(U) who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent(V) and glorify him.(W)

10 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast,(X) and its kingdom was plunged into darkness.(Y) People gnawed their tongues in agony 11 and cursed(Z) the God of heaven(AA) because of their pains and their sores,(AB) but they refused to repent of what they had done.(AC)

12 The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates,(AD) and its water was dried up to prepare the way(AE) for the kings from the East.(AF) 13 Then I saw three impure spirits(AG) that looked like frogs;(AH) they came out of the mouth of the dragon,(AI) out of the mouth of the beast(AJ) and out of the mouth of the false prophet.(AK) 14 They are demonic spirits(AL) that perform signs,(AM) and they go out to the kings of the whole world,(AN) to gather them for the battle(AO) on the great day(AP) of God Almighty.

15 “Look, I come like a thief!(AQ) Blessed is the one who stays awake(AR) and remains clothed, so as not to go naked and be shamefully exposed.”(AS)

16 Then they gathered the kings together(AT) to the place that in Hebrew(AU) is called Armageddon.(AV)

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air,(AW) and out of the temple(AX) came a loud voice(AY) from the throne, saying, “It is done!”(AZ) 18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder(BA) and a severe earthquake.(BB) No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth,(BC) so tremendous was the quake. 19 The great city(BD) split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered(BE) Babylon the Great(BF) and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.(BG) 20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.(BH) 21 From the sky huge hailstones,(BI) each weighing about a hundred pounds,[a] fell on people. And they cursed God(BJ) on account of the plague of hail,(BK) because the plague was so terrible.
