The first sounded, and there was (A)hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and (B)a third of the earth was burned up, and (C)a third of the (D)trees were burned up, and all the green (E)grass was burned up.

The second angel sounded, and something like a great (F)mountain burning with fire was hurled into the sea; and (G)a third of the (H)sea became blood, and (I)a third of the creatures which were in the sea [a]and had life, died; and a third of the (J)ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded, and a great star (K)fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a (L)third of the rivers and on the (M)springs of waters. 11 The star is named Wormwood; and a (N)third of the waters became (O)wormwood, and many people died from the waters because they were made bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded, and a (P)third of the (Q)sun, a third of the (R)moon, and a (S)third of the (T)stars were struck, so that a (U)third of them would be darkened and the day would not shine for a (V)third of it, and the night in the same way.

13 Then I looked, and I heard [b]an eagle flying in (W)midheaven, saying with a loud voice, “(X)Woe, woe, woe to (Y)those who live on the earth, because of the remaining blasts of the trumpet of the (Z)three angels who are about to sound!”

The Fifth Trumpet: Shaft of the Abyss

Then the (AA)fifth angel sounded, and I saw a (AB)star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the (AC)key to the (AD)shaft of the abyss was given to him. He opened the shaft of the abyss, and (AE)smoke ascended out of the shaft like the smoke of a great furnace; and (AF)the sun and the air were darkened from the smoke of the shaft. Then out of the smoke came (AG)locusts [c]upon the earth, and power was given them, as the (AH)scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to (AI)hurt the (AJ)grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the people who do not have the (AK)seal of God on their foreheads. And [d]they were not permitted to kill [e]anyone, but to torment for (AL)five months; and their torment was like the torment of a (AM)scorpion when it [f]stings a person. And in those days (AN)people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death [g]will flee from them!

The [h](AO)appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like human faces. They had hair like the hair of women, and their (AP)teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the (AQ)sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10 They have tails like (AR)scorpions, and stings; and in their (AS)tails is their power to hurt people for (AT)five months. 11 They have as king over them, the angel of the (AU)abyss; his name in (AV)Hebrew is [i](AW)Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name [j]Apollyon.

12 (AX)The first woe has passed; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.

The Sixth Trumpet: Army from the East

13 Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [k]a voice from the [l]four (AY)horns of the (AZ)golden altar which is before God, 14 saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the (BA)four angels who are bound at the (BB)great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were (BC)released, so that they would kill a (BD)third of mankind. 16 The number of the armies of the horsemen was (BE)two hundred million; (BF)I heard the number of them. 17 And this is how I saw (BG)in my vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire, of hyacinth, and of [m](BH)brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and (BI)out of their mouths *came fire and smoke and [n](BJ)brimstone. 18 A (BK)third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the (BL)fire, the smoke, and the [o]brimstone which came out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

20 The rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, (BM)did not repent of (BN)the works of their hands so as not to (BO)worship demons and (BP)the idols of gold, silver, brass, stone, and wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they (BQ)did not repent of their murders, nor of their (BR)witchcraft, nor of their (BS)sexual immorality, nor of their thefts.

The first angel(A) sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire(B) mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third(C) of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.(D)

The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain,(E) all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third(F) of the sea turned into blood,(G) a third(H) of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky(I) on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water(J) 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third(K) of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.(L)

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third(M) of them turned dark.(N) A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.(O)

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair(P) call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe(Q) to the inhabitants of the earth,(R) because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth.(S) The star was given the key(T) to the shaft of the Abyss.(U) When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace.(V) The sun and sky were darkened(W) by the smoke from the Abyss.(X) And out of the smoke locusts(Y) came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions(Z) of the earth. They were told not to harm(AA) the grass of the earth or any plant or tree,(AB) but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads.(AC) They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months.(AD) And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion(AE) when it strikes. During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them.(AF)

The locusts looked like horses prepared for battle.(AG) On their heads they wore something like crowns of gold, and their faces resembled human faces.(AH) Their hair was like women’s hair, and their teeth were like lions’ teeth.(AI) They had breastplates like breastplates of iron, and the sound of their wings was like the thundering of many horses and chariots rushing into battle.(AJ) 10 They had tails with stingers, like scorpions, and in their tails they had power to torment people for five months.(AK) 11 They had as king over them the angel of the Abyss,(AL) whose name in Hebrew(AM) is Abaddon(AN) and in Greek is Apollyon (that is, Destroyer).

12 The first woe is past; two other woes are yet to come.(AO)

13 The sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the four horns(AP) of the golden altar that is before God.(AQ) 14 It said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels(AR) who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”(AS) 15 And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released(AT) to kill a third(AU) of mankind.(AV) 16 The number of the mounted troops was twice ten thousand times ten thousand. I heard their number.(AW)

17 The horses and riders I saw in my vision looked like this: Their breastplates were fiery red, dark blue, and yellow as sulfur. The heads of the horses resembled the heads of lions, and out of their mouths(AX) came fire, smoke and sulfur.(AY) 18 A third(AZ) of mankind was killed(BA) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur(BB) that came out of their mouths. 19 The power of the horses was in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails were like snakes, having heads with which they inflict injury.

20 The rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent(BC) of the work of their hands;(BD) they did not stop worshiping demons,(BE) and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood—idols that cannot see or hear or walk.(BF) 21 Nor did they repent(BG) of their murders, their magic arts,(BH) their sexual immorality(BI) or their thefts.
