(A)Pay her back even as she has paid, and [a]give back to her double according to her deeds; in the (B)cup which she has mixed, mix twice as much for her. (C)To the degree that she glorified herself and (D)lived [b]sensuously, to the same degree give her torment and mourning; for she says in her heart, ‘(E)I sit as a queen and I am not a widow, and will never see mourning.’ For this reason (F)in one day her plagues will come, [c]pestilence and mourning and famine, and she will be (G)burned up with fire; for the Lord God who judges her (H)is strong.

Lament for Babylon

“And (I)the kings of the earth, who committed acts of immorality and (J)lived [d]sensuously with her, will (K)weep and lament over her when they (L)see the smoke of her burning, 10 (M)standing at a distance because of the fear of her torment, saying, ‘(N)Woe, woe, (O)the great city, Babylon, the strong city! For in (P)one hour your judgment has come.’

11 “And the (Q)merchants of the earth (R)weep and mourn over her, because no one buys their cargoes any more— 12 cargoes of (S)gold and silver and precious [e]stones and pearls and fine linen and purple and silk and scarlet, and every kind of citron wood and every article of ivory and every article made from very costly wood and [f]bronze and iron and marble, 13 and cinnamon and [g]spice and incense and perfume and frankincense and wine and olive oil and fine flour and wheat and cattle and sheep, and cargoes of horses and chariots and [h]slaves and [i](T)human lives. 14 The fruit [j]you long for has gone from you, and all things that were luxurious and splendid have passed away from you and men will no longer find them. 15 The (U)merchants of (V)these things, who became rich from her, will (W)stand at a distance because of the fear of her torment, weeping and mourning, 16 saying, ‘(X)Woe, woe, (Y)the great city, she who (Z)was clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, and [k]adorned with gold and precious [l]stones and pearls; 17 for in (AA)one hour such great wealth has been laid (AB)waste!’ And (AC)every shipmaster and every [m]passenger and sailor, and as many as make their living by the sea, (AD)stood at a distance, 18 and were (AE)crying out as they (AF)saw the smoke of her burning, saying, ‘(AG)What city is like (AH)the great city?’ 19 And they threw (AI)dust on their heads and were crying out, weeping and mourning, saying, ‘(AJ)Woe, woe, the great city, in which all who had ships at sea (AK)became rich by her [n]wealth, for in (AL)one hour she has been laid (AM)waste!’ 20 (AN)Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you [o]saints and (AO)apostles and prophets, because (AP)God has [p]pronounced judgment for you against her.”

21 Then [q]a (AQ)strong angel (AR)took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying, “So will Babylon, (AS)the great city, be thrown down with violence, and (AT)will not be found any longer. 22 And (AU)the sound of harpists and musicians and flute-players and trumpeters will not be heard in you any longer; and no craftsman of any craft will be found in you any longer; and the (AV)sound of a mill will not be heard in you any longer; 23 and the light of a lamp will not shine in you any longer; and the (AW)voice of the bridegroom and bride will not be heard in you any longer; for your (AX)merchants were the great men of the earth, because all the nations were deceived (AY)by your sorcery. 24 And in her was found the (AZ)blood of prophets and of [r]saints and of (BA)all who have been slain on the earth.”

Give back to her as she has given;
pay her back(A) double(B) for what she has done.
Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(C)
Give her as much torment and grief
as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(D)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[a]
    I will never mourn.’(E)
Therefore in one day(F) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(G)

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(H) and shared her luxury(I) see the smoke of her burning,(J) they will weep and mourn over her.(K) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(L) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(M)
    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(N) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(O) of the earth will weep and mourn(P) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(Q) 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(R) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(S)

14 “They will say, ‘The fruit you longed for is gone from you. All your luxury and splendor have vanished, never to be recovered.’ 15 The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her(T) will stand far off,(U) terrified at her torment. They will weep and mourn(V) 16 and cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(W)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(X)
17 In one hour(Y) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(Z)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(AA) will stand far off.(AB) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(AC) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(AD)?’(AE) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(AF) and with weeping and mourning(AG) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AH)
where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AI)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AJ)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AK)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(AL) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(AM) and said:

“With such violence
the great city(AN) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(AO)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(AP)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(AQ)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(AR)
By your magic spell(AS) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(AT)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(AU)
