And the four living creatures, (A)each of them with six wings, are (B)full of eyes all around and within, and (C)day and night they never cease to say,

(D)“Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty,
(E)who was and is and is to come!”

And whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to him who is seated on the throne, (F)who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders (G)fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast (H)their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 (I)“Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for (J)you created all things,
and (K)by your will they existed and were created.”

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne (L)a scroll written within and on the back, (M)sealed with seven seals. And (N)I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, (O)the Lion (P)of the tribe of Judah, (Q)the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.”

And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw (R)a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with (S)seven eyes, which are (T)the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders (U)fell down before the Lamb, (V)each holding a harp, and (W)golden bowls full of incense, (X)which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang (Y)a new song, saying,

“Worthy are you to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
for (Z)you were slain, and by your blood (AA)you ransomed people for God
from (AB)every tribe and language and people and nation,
10 and you have made them (AC)a kingdom and priests to our God,
and they shall reign on the earth.”

11 Then I looked, and I heard around the throne and the living creatures and the elders the voice of many angels, numbering (AD)myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, 12 saying with a loud voice,

(AE)“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain,
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might
and honor and glory and blessing!”

13 And I heard (AF)every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, saying,

“To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb
be blessing and honor and glory and might forever and ever!”

14 And the four living creatures (AG)said, “Amen!” and the elders (AH)fell down and worshiped.

The Seven Seals

Now I watched when the Lamb opened one of (AI)the seven seals, and I heard (AJ)one of the four living creatures say (AK)with a voice like thunder, (AL)“Come!” And I looked, and behold, (AM)a white horse! And (AN)its rider had a bow, and (AO)a crown was given to him, and he came out (AP)conquering, and to conquer.

When he opened the second seal, I heard (AQ)the second living creature say, “Come!” And out came another horse, (AR)bright red. Its rider was permitted (AS)to take peace from the earth, so that people should slay one another, and he was given a great sword.

When he opened the third seal, I heard the (AT)third living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (AU)a black horse! And its rider had a pair of scales in his hand. And I heard what seemed to be a voice in the midst of the four living creatures, saying, (AV)“A quart[a] of wheat for a denarius,[b] and three quarts of barley for a denarius, and (AW)do not harm the oil and wine!”

When he opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of (AX)the fourth living creature say, “Come!” And I looked, and behold, (AY)a pale horse! And its rider's name was Death, and Hades followed him. And they were given authority over a fourth of the earth, to kill (AZ)with sword and with famine and with pestilence and (BA)by wild beasts of the earth.

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under (BB)the altar (BC)the souls of those who had been slain (BD)for the word of God and for (BE)the witness they had borne. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “O Sovereign Lord, (BF)holy and true, (BG)how long (BH)before you will judge and (BI)avenge our blood on (BJ)those who dwell on the earth?” 11 Then they were each given (BK)a white robe and (BL)told to rest a little longer, (BM)until the number of their fellow servants and their brothers[c] (BN)should be complete, who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

12 When he opened the sixth seal, I looked, and behold, (BO)there was a great earthquake, and (BP)the sun became black as (BQ)sackcloth, the full moon became like blood, 13 and (BR)the stars of the sky fell to the earth (BS)as the fig tree sheds its winter fruit when shaken by a gale. 14 (BT)The sky vanished (BU)like a scroll that is being rolled up, and (BV)every mountain and island was removed from its place. 15 Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful, and everyone, slave[d] and free, (BW)hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains, 16 (BX)calling to the mountains and rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of (BY)him who is seated on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb, 17 for (BZ)the great day of their wrath has come, and (CA)who can stand?”

The 144,000 of Israel Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners of the earth, holding back (CB)the four winds of the earth, (CC)that no wind might blow on earth or sea or against any tree. Then I saw another angel ascending (CD)from the rising of the sun, with (CE)the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, (CF)“Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, until we have sealed the servants of our God (CG)on their foreheads.” And (CH)I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel:

12,000 from the tribe of Judah were sealed,
12,000 from the tribe of Reuben,
12,000 from the tribe of Gad,
12,000 from the tribe of Asher,
12,000 from the tribe of Naphtali,
12,000 from the tribe of Manasseh,
12,000 from the tribe of Simeon,
12,000 from the tribe of Levi,
12,000 from the tribe of Issachar,
12,000 from the tribe of Zebulun,
12,000 from the tribe of Joseph,
12,000 from the tribe of Benjamin were sealed.

A Great Multitude from Every Nation

After this I looked, and behold, (CI)a great multitude that no one could number, (CJ)from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, (CK)clothed in white robes, with (CL)palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, (CM)“Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” 11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and (CN)the four living creatures, and they (CO)fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, 12 (CP)saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

Each of the four living creatures(A) had six wings(B) and was covered with eyes all around,(C) even under its wings. Day and night(D) they never stop saying:

“‘Holy, holy, holy

is the Lord God Almighty,’[a](E)

who was, and is, and is to come.”(F)

Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne(G) and who lives for ever and ever,(H) 10 the twenty-four elders(I) fall down before him(J) who sits on the throne(K) and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say:

11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,(L)
for you created all things,
and by your will they were created
    and have their being.”(M)

The Scroll and the Lamb

Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne(N) a scroll with writing on both sides(O) and sealed(P) with seven seals. And I saw a mighty angel(Q) proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion(R) of the tribe of Judah,(S) the Root of David,(T) has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

Then I saw a Lamb,(U) looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures(V) and the elders.(W) The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes,(X) which are the seven spirits[b](Y) of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne.(Z) And when he had taken it, the four living creatures(AA) and the twenty-four elders(AB) fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp(AC) and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers(AD) of God’s people. And they sang a new song, saying:(AE)

“You are worthy(AF) to take the scroll
    and to open its seals,
because you were slain,
and with your blood(AG) you purchased(AH) for God
persons from every tribe and language and people and nation.(AI)
10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests(AJ) to serve our God,
and they will reign[c] on the earth.”(AK)

11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand.(AL) They encircled the throne and the living creatures(AM) and the elders.(AN) 12 In a loud voice they were saying:

“Worthy is the Lamb,(AO) who was slain,(AP)
to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength
and honor and glory and praise!”(AQ)

13 Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth(AR) and on the sea, and all that is in them, saying:

“To him who sits on the throne(AS) and to the Lamb(AT)
be praise and honor and glory and power,
for ever and ever!”(AU)

14 The four living creatures(AV) said, “Amen,”(AW) and the elders(AX) fell down and worshiped.(AY)

The Seals

I watched as the Lamb(AZ) opened the first of the seven seals.(BA) Then I heard one of the four living creatures(BB) say in a voice like thunder,(BC) “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a white horse!(BD) Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown,(BE) and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.(BF)

When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature(BG) say, “Come!” Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.(BH) Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth(BI) and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(BJ) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(BK) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(BL) saying, “Two pounds[d] of wheat for a day’s wages,[e] and six pounds[f] of barley for a day’s wages,[g](BM) and do not damage(BN) the oil and the wine!”

When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(BO) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(BP) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(BQ) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(BR)

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under(BS) the altar(BT) the souls of those who had been slain(BU) because of the word of God(BV) and the testimony they had maintained. 10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,(BW) Sovereign Lord,(BX) holy and true,(BY) until you judge the inhabitants of the earth(BZ) and avenge our blood?”(CA) 11 Then each of them was given a white robe,(CB) and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[h] were killed just as they had been.(CC)

12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake.(CD) The sun turned black(CE) like sackcloth(CF) made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red, 13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth,(CG) as figs drop from a fig tree(CH) when shaken by a strong wind. 14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up,(CI) and every mountain and island was removed from its place.(CJ)

15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free,(CK) hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.(CL) 16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us(CM) and hide us[i] from the face of him who sits on the throne(CN) and from the wrath of the Lamb! 17 For the great day(CO) of their[j] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”(CP)

144,000 Sealed

After this I saw four angels standing at the four corners(CQ) of the earth, holding back the four winds(CR) of the earth to prevent(CS) any wind from blowing on the land or on the sea or on any tree. Then I saw another angel coming up from the east, having the seal(CT) of the living God.(CU) He called out in a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm the land and the sea:(CV) “Do not harm(CW) the land or the sea or the trees until we put a seal on the foreheads(CX) of the servants of our God.” Then I heard the number(CY) of those who were sealed: 144,000(CZ) from all the tribes of Israel.

From the tribe of Judah 12,000 were sealed,

from the tribe of Reuben 12,000,

from the tribe of Gad 12,000,

from the tribe of Asher 12,000,

from the tribe of Naphtali 12,000,

from the tribe of Manasseh 12,000,

from the tribe of Simeon 12,000,

from the tribe of Levi 12,000,

from the tribe of Issachar 12,000,

from the tribe of Zebulun 12,000,

from the tribe of Joseph 12,000,

from the tribe of Benjamin 12,000.

The Great Multitude in White Robes

After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language,(DA) standing before the throne(DB) and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes(DC) and were holding palm branches in their hands. 10 And they cried out in a loud voice:

“Salvation belongs to our God,(DD)
who sits on the throne,(DE)
and to the Lamb.”

11 All the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders(DF) and the four living creatures.(DG) They fell down on their faces(DH) before the throne and worshiped God, 12 saying:

“Amen!
Praise and glory
and wisdom and thanks and honor
and power and strength
be to our God for ever and ever.
Amen!”(DI)
