10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast (A)that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. 12 And (B)the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings (C)for one hour, together with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast. 14 They (D)will make war on the Lamb, and (E)the Lamb will conquer them, for he is (F)Lord of lords and (G)King of kings, and those with him are (H)called and chosen and faithful.”

15 And the angel[a] said to me, (I)“The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. 16 And (J)the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast (K)will hate the prostitute. They will make her (L)desolate and (M)naked, and (N)devour her flesh and (O)burn her up with fire, 17 for (P)God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and (Q)handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman that you saw is (R)the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.”

The Fall of Babylon

18 After this I saw (S)another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and (T)the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice,

(U)“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
    She has become (V)a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt (W)for every unclean spirit,
    a haunt (X)for every unclean bird,
    a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.
For all nations have drunk[b]
    (Y)the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality,
and (Z)the kings of the earth have committed immorality with her,
    and (AA)the merchants of the earth have grown rich from the power of her luxurious living.”

Then I heard another voice from heaven saying,

(AB)“Come out of her, my people,
    lest you take part in her sins,
lest you share in her plagues;
for (AC)her sins are heaped high as heaven,
    and (AD)God has remembered her iniquities.
(AE)Pay her back as she herself has paid back others,
    and repay her (AF)double for her deeds;
    mix a double portion for her (AG)in the cup she mixed.
(AH)As she glorified herself and lived in luxury,
    so give her a like measure of torment and mourning,
since in her heart she says,
    (AI)‘I sit as a queen,
I am no widow,
    and mourning I shall never see.’
For this reason her plagues will come (AJ)in a single day,
    death and mourning and famine,
and (AK)she will be burned up with fire;
    for (AL)mighty is the Lord God who has judged her.”

And (AM)the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, (AN)will weep and wail over her (AO)when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 (AP)They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

“Alas! Alas! (AQ)You great city,
    you mighty city, Babylon!
For (AR)in a single hour your judgment has come.”

11 And (AS)the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore,

10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not,(A) is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

12 “The ten horns(B) you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour(C) will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.(D) 14 They will wage war(E) against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over(F) them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings(G)—and with him will be his called, chosen(H) and faithful followers.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters(I) you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.(J) 16 The beast and the ten horns(K) you saw will hate the prostitute.(L) They will bring her to ruin(M) and leave her naked;(N) they will eat her flesh(O) and burn her with fire.(P) 17 For God has put it into their hearts(Q) to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,(R) until God’s words are fulfilled.(S) 18 The woman you saw is the great city(T) that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel(U) coming down from heaven.(V) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(W) With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[a](X)
    She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(Y)
    a haunt for every unclean bird,
    a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(Z)
For all the nations have drunk
    the maddening wine of her adulteries.(AA)
The kings of the earth committed adultery with her,(AB)
    and the merchants of the earth grew rich(AC) from her excessive luxuries.”(AD)

Warning to Escape Babylon’s Judgment

Then I heard another voice from heaven say:

“‘Come out of her, my people,’[b](AE)
    so that you will not share in her sins,
    so that you will not receive any of her plagues;(AF)
for her sins are piled up to heaven,(AG)
    and God has remembered(AH) her crimes.
Give back to her as she has given;
    pay her back(AI) double(AJ) for what she has done.
    Pour her a double portion from her own cup.(AK)
Give her as much torment and grief
    as the glory and luxury she gave herself.(AL)
In her heart she boasts,
    ‘I sit enthroned as queen.
I am not a widow;[c]
    I will never mourn.’(AM)
Therefore in one day(AN) her plagues will overtake her:
    death, mourning and famine.
She will be consumed by fire,(AO)
    for mighty is the Lord God who judges her.

Threefold Woe Over Babylon’s Fall

“When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her(AP) and shared her luxury(AQ) see the smoke of her burning,(AR) they will weep and mourn over her.(AS) 10 Terrified at her torment, they will stand far off(AT) and cry:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AU)
    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(AV) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(AW) of the earth will weep and mourn(AX) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(AY)
