14 For they are (A)demonic spirits, (B)performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, (C)to assemble them for battle on (D)the great day of God the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, (E)I am coming like a thief! (F)Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, (G)that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!”) 16 And (H)they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called (I)Armageddon.

The Seventh Bowl

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into (J)the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, (K)“It is done!” 18 And there were (L)flashes of lightning, rumblings,[a] peals of thunder, and (M)a great earthquake (N)such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake. 19 (O)The great city (P)was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God (Q)remembered (R)Babylon the great, (S)to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. 20 And (T)every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found. 21 And (U)great hailstones, about one hundred pounds[b] each, fell from heaven on people; and (V)they cursed God for (W)the plague of the hail, because the plague was so severe.

The Great Prostitute and the Beast

17 Then (X)one of the seven angels who had (Y)the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of (Z)the great prostitute (AA)who is seated on many waters, (AB)with whom the kings of the earth have committed sexual immorality, and (AC)with the wine of whose sexual immorality (AD)the dwellers on earth have become drunk.” And (AE)he carried me away in the Spirit (AF)into a wilderness, and I saw a woman sitting on (AG)a scarlet beast that was full of (AH)blasphemous names, and (AI)it had seven heads and ten horns. The woman (AJ)was arrayed in purple and scarlet, and adorned (AK)with gold and jewels and pearls, holding in her hand (AL)a golden cup full of abominations and the impurities of her sexual immorality. And on her forehead was written a name of (AM)mystery: (AN)“Babylon the great, mother of prostitutes and of earth's abominations.” And I saw the woman, drunk (AO)with the blood of the saints, the blood of (AP)the martyrs of Jesus.[c]

When I saw her, I marveled greatly. But the angel said to me, “Why do you marvel? I will tell you (AQ)the mystery of the woman, and of the beast with seven heads and ten horns that carries her. The beast that you saw (AR)was, and is not, and (AS)is about to rise from (AT)the bottomless pit[d] and (AU)go to destruction. And (AV)the dwellers on earth whose names have not been written in (AW)the book of life from the foundation of the world will marvel to see the beast, because (AX)it was and is not and is to come. (AY)This calls for a mind with wisdom: the seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman is seated; 10 they are also seven kings, five of whom have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come, and when he does come he must remain only a little while. 11 As for the beast (AZ)that was and is not, it is an eighth but it belongs to the seven, and it goes to destruction. 12 And (BA)the ten horns that you saw are ten kings who have not yet received royal power, but they are to receive authority as kings (BB)for one hour, together with the beast. 13 These are of one mind, and they hand over their power and authority to the beast. 14 They (BC)will make war on the Lamb, and (BD)the Lamb will conquer them, for he is (BE)Lord of lords and (BF)King of kings, and those with him are (BG)called and chosen and faithful.”

15 And the angel[e] said to me, (BH)“The waters that you saw, where the prostitute is seated, are peoples and multitudes and nations and languages. 16 And (BI)the ten horns that you saw, they and the beast (BJ)will hate the prostitute. They will make her (BK)desolate and (BL)naked, and (BM)devour her flesh and (BN)burn her up with fire, 17 for (BO)God has put it into their hearts to carry out his purpose by being of one mind and (BP)handing over their royal power to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled. 18 And the woman that you saw is (BQ)the great city that has dominion over the kings of the earth.”

The Fall of Babylon

18 After this I saw (BR)another angel coming down from heaven, having great authority, and (BS)the earth was made bright with his glory. And he called out with a mighty voice,

(BT)“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!
She has become (BU)a dwelling place for demons,
a haunt (BV)for every unclean spirit,
a haunt (BW)for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.

Babylon, the Prostitute on the Beast

17 One of the seven angels(AA) who had the seven bowls(AB) came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the punishment(AC) of the great prostitute,(AD) who sits by many waters.(AE) With her the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries.”(AF)

Then the angel carried me away in the Spirit(AG) into a wilderness.(AH) There I saw a woman sitting on a scarlet(AI) beast that was covered with blasphemous names(AJ) and had seven heads and ten horns.(AK) The woman was dressed in purple and scarlet, and was glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls.(AL) She held a golden cup(AM) in her hand, filled with abominable things and the filth of her adulteries.(AN) The name written on her forehead was a mystery:(AO)

babylon the great(AP)

and of the abominations of the earth.

I saw that the woman was drunk with the blood of God’s holy people,(AR) the blood of those who bore testimony to Jesus.

When I saw her, I was greatly astonished. Then the angel said to me: “Why are you astonished? I will explain to you the mystery(AS) of the woman and of the beast she rides, which has the seven heads and ten horns.(AT) The beast, which you saw, once was, now is not, and yet will come up out of the Abyss(AU) and go to its destruction.(AV) The inhabitants of the earth(AW) whose names have not been written in the book of life(AX) from the creation of the world will be astonished(AY) when they see the beast, because it once was, now is not, and yet will come.

“This calls for a mind with wisdom.(AZ) The seven heads(BA) are seven hills on which the woman sits. 10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for only a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not,(BB) is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.

12 “The ten horns(BC) you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour(BD) will receive authority as kings along with the beast. 13 They have one purpose and will give their power and authority to the beast.(BE) 14 They will wage war(BF) against the Lamb, but the Lamb will triumph over(BG) them because he is Lord of lords and King of kings(BH)—and with him will be his called, chosen(BI) and faithful followers.”

15 Then the angel said to me, “The waters(BJ) you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.(BK) 16 The beast and the ten horns(BL) you saw will hate the prostitute.(BM) They will bring her to ruin(BN) and leave her naked;(BO) they will eat her flesh(BP) and burn her with fire.(BQ) 17 For God has put it into their hearts(BR) to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to hand over to the beast their royal authority,(BS) until God’s words are fulfilled.(BT) 18 The woman you saw is the great city(BU) that rules over the kings of the earth.”

Lament Over Fallen Babylon

18 After this I saw another angel(BV) coming down from heaven.(BW) He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor.(BX) With a mighty voice he shouted:

“‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!’[b](BY)
She has become a dwelling for demons
and a haunt for every impure spirit,(BZ)
a haunt for every unclean bird,
a haunt for every unclean and detestable animal.(CA)
