17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet(A) as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me(B) and said: “Do not be afraid.(C) I am the First and the Last.(D) 18 I am the Living One; I was dead,(E) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!(F) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.(G)

19 “Write, therefore, what you have seen,(H) what is now and what will take place later. 20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand(I) and of the seven golden lampstands(J) is this: The seven stars are the angels[a] of the seven churches,(K) and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.(L)

To the Church in Ephesus

“To the angel[b] of the church in Ephesus(M) write:

These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand(N) and walks among the seven golden lampstands.(O) I know your deeds,(P) your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested(Q) those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.(R) You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name,(S) and have not grown weary.

Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.(T) Consider how far you have fallen! Repent(U) and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand(V) from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans,(W) which I also hate.

Whoever has ears, let them hear(X) what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious,(Y) I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,(Z) which is in the paradise(AA) of God.

  2. Revelation 2:1 Or messenger; also in verses 8, 12 and 18

17 And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

19 Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;

20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks;

I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars:

And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted.

Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

But this thou hast, that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolaitanes, which I also hate.

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
