17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and with a loud voice he called to (A)all the birds that fly directly overhead, (B)“Come, gather for (C)the great supper of God, 18 (D)to eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all men, both free and slave,[a] both small and great.” 19 And I saw (E)the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies (F)gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army. 20 And the beast was captured, and with it (G)the false prophet (H)who in its presence[b] had done the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who (I)worshiped its image. These two were (J)thrown alive into the lake of (K)fire that burns with sulfur. 21 And the rest were slain by the sword (L)that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and (M)all the birds were gorged with their flesh.

The Judgment at Christ's Coming

This is (A)evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be (B)considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering— since indeed God considers it (C)just (D)to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to grant (E)relief to you who are afflicted as well as to us, when (F)the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven (G)with his mighty angels (H)in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those (I)who do not know God and on those who (J)do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will suffer the punishment of (K)eternal destruction, (L)away from[a] the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 10 (M)when he comes on (N)that day (O)to be glorified in his saints, and to be marveled at among all who have believed, because our (P)testimony to you (Q)was believed. 11 To this end we (R)always pray for you, that our God may (S)make you worthy of his calling and may fulfill every resolve for good and every (T)work of faith by his power, 12 so that the name of our Lord Jesus (U)may be glorified in you, and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. 2 Thessalonians 1:9 Or destruction that comes from

All this is evidence(A) that God’s judgment is right, and as a result you will be counted worthy(B) of the kingdom of God, for which you are suffering. God is just:(C) He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you(D) and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven(E) in blazing fire(F) with his powerful angels.(G) He will punish(H) those who do not know God(I) and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.(J) They will be punished with everlasting destruction(K) and shut out from the presence of the Lord(L) and from the glory of his might(M) 10 on the day(N) he comes to be glorified(O) in his holy people and to be marveled at among all those who have believed. This includes you, because you believed our testimony to you.(P)

11 With this in mind, we constantly pray for you,(Q) that our God may make you worthy(R) of his calling,(S) and that by his power he may bring to fruition your every desire for goodness(T) and your every deed prompted by faith.(U) 12 We pray this so that the name of our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you,(V) and you in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.[a]

The Righteous Reign of the Branch

11 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of (A)Jesse,
    and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And (B)the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
    the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
    the Spirit of counsel and might,
    the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
(C)He shall not judge by (D)what his eyes see,
    or decide disputes by (E)what his ears hear,
but (F)with righteousness he shall judge the poor,
    and decide with equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall (G)strike the earth with the rod of his mouth,
    and (H)with the breath of his lips (I)he shall kill the wicked.
