And (A)the kings of the earth, who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her, (B)will weep and wail over her (C)when they see the smoke of her burning. 10 (D)They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say,

“Alas! Alas! (E)You great city,
    you mighty city, Babylon!
For (F)in a single hour your judgment has come.”

11 And (G)the merchants of the earth weep and mourn for her, since no one buys their cargo anymore, 12 cargo of gold, silver, jewels, pearls, fine linen, purple cloth, silk, scarlet cloth, all kinds of scented wood, all kinds of articles of ivory, all kinds of articles of costly wood, bronze, iron and marble, 13 cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, frankincense, wine, oil, fine flour, wheat, cattle and sheep, horses and chariots, and slaves, that is, human souls.[a]

14 “The fruit for which your soul longed
    has gone from you,
and all your delicacies and your splendors
    are lost to you,
    never to be found again!”

15 (H)The merchants of these wares, who gained wealth from her, (I)will stand far off, in fear of her torment, weeping and mourning aloud,

16 “Alas, alas, for the great city
(J)that was clothed in fine linen,
        in purple and scarlet,
    adorned with gold,
        with jewels, and with pearls!
17 For (K)in a single hour all this wealth (L)has been laid waste.”

And (M)all shipmasters and seafaring men, sailors and all whose trade is on the sea, stood far off 18 and (N)cried out (O)as they saw the smoke of her burning,

(P)“What city was like the great city?”

19 And they threw (Q)dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out,

“Alas, alas, for the great city
(R)where all who had ships at sea
    grew rich by her wealth!
For (S)in a single hour she has been laid waste.
20 (T)Rejoice over her, O heaven,
and you saints and (U)apostles and prophets,
for (V)God has given judgment for you against her!”

21 Then (W)a mighty angel (X)took up a stone like a great millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

“So will Babylon (Y)the great city be thrown down with violence,
    and will be found no more;
22 and (Z)the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters,
will be heard in you no more,
and a craftsman of any craft
will be found in you no more,
and (AA)the sound of the mill
will be heard in you no more,
23 and the light of a lamp
will shine in you no more,
and (AB)the voice of bridegroom and bride
will be heard in you no more,
for (AC)your merchants were the great ones of the earth,
and all nations were deceived (AD)by your sorcery.
24 And (AE)in her was found the blood of prophets and of saints,
and of (AF)all who have been slain on earth.”

    you mighty city of Babylon!
In one hour(G) your doom has come!’

11 “The merchants(H) of the earth will weep and mourn(I) over her because no one buys their cargoes anymore(J) 12 cargoes of gold, silver, precious stones and pearls; fine linen, purple, silk and scarlet cloth; every sort of citron wood, and articles of every kind made of ivory, costly wood, bronze, iron and marble;(K) 13 cargoes of cinnamon and spice, of incense, myrrh and frankincense, of wine and olive oil, of fine flour and wheat; cattle and sheep; horses and carriages; and human beings sold as slaves.(L)

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(P)
dressed in fine linen, purple and scarlet,
and glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls!(Q)
17 In one hour(R) such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’(S)

“Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea,(T) will stand far off.(U) 18 When they see the smoke of her burning,(V) they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city(W)?’(X) 19 They will throw dust on their heads,(Y) and with weeping and mourning(Z) cry out:

“‘Woe! Woe to you, great city,(AA)
where all who had ships on the sea
    became rich through her wealth!
In one hour she has been brought to ruin!’(AB)

20 “Rejoice over her, you heavens!(AC)
    Rejoice, you people of God!
    Rejoice, apostles and prophets!
For God has judged her
with the judgment she imposed on you.”(AD)

The Finality of Babylon’s Doom

21 Then a mighty angel(AE) picked up a boulder the size of a large millstone and threw it into the sea,(AF) and said:

“With such violence
the great city(AG) of Babylon will be thrown down,
    never to be found again.
22 The music of harpists and musicians, pipers and trumpeters,
will never be heard in you again.(AH)
No worker of any trade
will ever be found in you again.
The sound of a millstone
will never be heard in you again.(AI)
23 The light of a lamp
will never shine in you again.
The voice of bridegroom and bride
will never be heard in you again.(AJ)
Your merchants were the world’s important people.(AK)
By your magic spell(AL) all the nations were led astray.
24 In her was found the blood of prophets and of God’s holy people,(AM)
of all who have been slaughtered on the earth.”(AN)

(A)Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth. 17 (B)For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing, not realizing that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, (C)blind, and naked. 18 I counsel you (D)to buy from me gold refined by fire, so that you may be rich, and (E)white garments so that you may clothe yourself and (F)the shame of your nakedness may not be seen, and salve to anoint your eyes, (G)so that you may see. 19 (H)Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent. 20 Behold, I stand at the door and (I)knock. (J)If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, (K)I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me. 21 (L)The one who conquers, (M)I will grant him to sit with me on my throne, as (N)I also conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.(H) So be earnest and repent.(I) 20 Here I am! I stand at the door(J) and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door,(K) I will come in(L) and eat with that person, and they with me.

21 To the one who is victorious,(M) I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,(N) just as I was victorious(O) and sat down with my Father on his throne.

15 (A)Do not love the world or the things in the world. 60 (A)Jeremiah wrote in a book all the disaster that should come upon Babylon, (B)all these words that are written concerning Babylon. 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah: “When you come to Babylon, see that you read all these words, 62 and say, ‘O Lord, you have said concerning this place that you will cut it off, so (C)that nothing shall dwell in it, neither man nor beast, and it shall be (D)desolate forever.’ 63 When you finish reading this book, (E)(F)tie a stone to it (G)and cast it into the midst of the Euphrates, 64 and say, (H)‘Thus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the disaster that I am bringing upon her, (I)and they shall become exhausted.’”

Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

And her people(E) will fall.’”(F)
