The Fifth Trumpet

9 The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth.^(A) The key for the shaft to the abyss^(B) was given to him. ² He opened the shaft to the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great^[a] furnace^(C) so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft.^{(D) 3} Then locusts came out of the smoke on to the earth,^(E) and power^[b] was given to them^(F) like the power that scorpions have on the earth.^{(G) 4} They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green plant, or any tree,^(H) but only those people who do not have God’s seal on their foreheads.^(I)

13 And I saw a beast coming up out of the sea.^(A) It had ten horns and seven heads. On its horns were ten crowns,^[a](B) and on its heads were blasphemous names.^[b](C)

⁴ They worshiped the dragon^(A) because he gave authority to the beast. And they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast?^(B) Who is able to wage war against it?”

⁷ And it was permitted to wage war against the saints and to conquer them.^(A) It was also given authority^(B) over every tribe, people, language, and nation.^(C)

The Beast from the Earth

¹¹ Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; it had two horns like a lamb,^[a](A) but it spoke like a dragon.

¹⁵ It was permitted to give breath^[a] to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast could both speak and cause whoever would not worship the image of the beast to be killed.^{(A) 16} And it makes everyone—small and great, rich and poor, free and slave—to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead,^{(B) 17} so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark: the beast’s name or the number of its name.

²⁰ for you were bought^(A) at a price. So glorify God with your body.^[a]
