⁸ I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!^(A) Its rider was named Death, and Hades^(B) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.^(C)

² And if they ask you, ‘Where shall we go?’ tell them, ‘This is what the Lord says:

³ “I will send four kinds of destroyers^(D) against them,” declares the Lord, “the sword^(E) to kill and the dogs^(F) to drag away and the birds^(G) and the wild animals to devour and destroy.^(H)

³ the third white,^(A) and the fourth dappled—all of them powerful.

⁴ “They will die of deadly diseases. They will not be mourned or buried^(A) but will be like dung lying on the ground.^(B) They will perish by sword and famine,^(C) and their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals.”^(D)

¹⁸ A third^(A) of mankind was killed^(B) by the three plagues of fire, smoke and sulfur^(C) that came out of their mouths.

¹⁸ I am the Living One; I was dead,^(A) and now look, I am alive for ever and ever!^(B) And I hold the keys of death and Hades.^(C)

¹³ The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades^(A) gave up the dead^(B) that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done.^{(C) 14} Then death^(D) and Hades^(E) were thrown into the lake of fire.^(F) The lake of fire is the second death.^(G)

¹⁵ And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released^(A) to kill a third^(B) of mankind.^(C)
