²³ I looked at the earth,
    and it was formless and empty;^(A)
and at the heavens,
    and their light^(B) was gone.
²⁴ I looked at the mountains,
    and they were quaking;^(C)
    all the hills were swaying.
²⁵ I looked, and there were no people;
    every bird in the sky had flown away.^(D)

¹⁴ for all the towering mountains
    and all the high hills,^(A)
15 for every lofty tower^(B)
    and every fortified wall,^(C)
16 for every trading ship^[a](D)
    and every stately vessel.
¹⁷ The arrogance of man will be brought low^(E)
    and human pride humbled;^(F)
the Lord alone will be exalted in that day,^(G)
