²⁰ They were trampled in the winepress^(A) outside the city,^(B) and blood^(C) flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.^[a]

¹⁴ The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen,^(A) white^(B) and clean. ¹⁵ Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword^(C) with which to strike down^(D) the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.”^[a](E) He treads the winepress^(F) of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. ¹⁶ On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:^(G)

¹⁷ And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds^(I) flying in midair,^(J) “Come,^(K) gather together for the great supper of God,^{(L) 18} so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people,^(M) free and slave,^(N) great and small.”^(O)

¹⁹ Then I saw the beast^(P) and the kings of the earth^(Q) and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse^(R) and his army. ²⁰ But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet^(S) who had performed the signs^(T) on its behalf.^(U) With these signs he had deluded^(V) those who had received the mark of the beast^(W) and worshiped its image.^(X) The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake^(Y) of burning sulfur.^{(Z) 21} The rest were killed with the sword^(AA) coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse,^(AB) and all the birds^(AC) gorged themselves on their flesh.

⁸ Their bodies will lie in the public square of the great city^(A)—which is figuratively called Sodom^(B) and Egypt—where also their Lord was crucified.^(C)

¹¹ The high priest carries the blood of animals into the Most Holy Place as a sin offering,^(A) but the bodies are burned outside the camp.^{(B) 12} And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate^(C) to make the people holy^(D) through his own blood.^(E)

²⁴ “And they will go out and look on the dead bodies^(A) of those who rebelled^(B) against me; the worms^(C) that eat them will not die, the fire that burns them will not be quenched,^(D) and they will be loathsome to all mankind.”

God’s Day of Vengeance and Redemption

¹⁷ “Son of man, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Call out to every kind of bird^(A) and all the wild animals: ‘Assemble and come together from all around to the sacrifice I am preparing for you, the great sacrifice on the mountains of Israel. There you will eat flesh and drink blood.^{(B) 18} You will eat the flesh of mighty men and drink the blood of the princes of the earth as if they were rams and lambs, goats and bulls—all of them fattened animals from Bashan.^{(C) 19} At the sacrifice^(D) I am preparing for you, you will eat fat till you are glutted and drink blood till you are drunk. ²⁰ At my table you will eat your fill of horses and riders, mighty men and soldiers of every kind,’ declares the Sovereign Lord.^(E)

²¹ “I will display my glory among the nations, and all the nations will see the punishment I inflict and the hand I lay on them.^(F)
