Third Seal: Scarcity on Earth
5 When He opened the third seal, (A)I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, (B)a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of (C)scales[a] in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A [b]quart of wheat for a [c]denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and (D)do not harm the oil and the wine.”

7 When He opened the fourth seal, (E)I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come and see.” 8 (F)So I looked, and behold, a pale horse. And the name of him who sat on it was Death, and Hades followed with him. And [d]power was given to them over a fourth of the earth, (G)to kill with sword, with hunger, with death, (H)and by the beasts of the earth.

5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature(A) say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse!(B) Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. 6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures,(C) saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d](D) and do not damage(E) the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature(F) say, “Come!” 8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse!(G) Its rider was named Death, and Hades(H) was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.(I)
