¹⁶ Live in harmony with one another.^(A) Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position.^[a] Do not be conceited.^(B)

¹⁷ Do not repay anyone evil for evil.^(C) Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone.^{(D) 18} If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.^{(E) 19} Do not take revenge,^(F) my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,”^[b](G) says the Lord. ²⁰ On the contrary:

²¹ Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

³¹ Get rid of^(A) all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.^{(B) 32} Be kind and compassionate to one another,^(C) forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.^(D)

²² Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love^(A) and peace, along with those who call on the Lord^(B) out of a pure heart.^{(C) 23} Don’t have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels.^{(D) 24} And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful.^{(E) 25} Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth,^{(F) 26} and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil,^(G) who has taken them captive to do his will.
