Psalm 89
Herrens löfte till David om ett evigt rike
1 En sång av esraiten Etan.
2 I evighet vill jag sjunga
om Herrens nådegärningar,
jag vill låta min mun förkunna din trofasthet
från släkte till släkte.
3 Jag säger: "Din nåd är befäst för evigt,
i himlen är din trofasthet fast grundad."
4 "Jag har slutit ett förbund med min utvalde,
med ed har jag lovat min tjänare David:
5 Din ätt skall jag låta bestå för evig tid
och bygga din tron från släkte till släkte." Sela.
6 Himlarna prisar dina under, Herre,
och din trofasthet i de heligas församling.
7 Ty vem i skyn kan jämföras med Herren?
Vem bland Guds söner är Herren lik?
8 Gud är fruktansvärd i de heligas råd,
mycket fruktansvärd är han för alla omkring honom.
9 Herre, härskarornas Gud, vem är som du?
Stark är Herren, och din trofasthet omger dig.
10 Du är den som råder över det stolta havet.
När dess böljor reser sig stillar du dem.
11 Du krossade Rahab så att han låg som en slagen,
med din mäktiga arm skingrade du dina fiender.
12 Din är himlen, din är också jorden.
Du har grundat världen och allt som finns i den.
13 Norr och söder har du skapat,
Tabor och Hermon jublar i ditt namn.
14 Du har en arm med hjältekraft,
mäktig är din hand, hög är din högra hand.
15 Rättfärdighet och rätt är din trons fäste,
nåd och sanning står inför ditt ansikte.
16 Saligt är det folk som vet vad jubel är,
Herre, i ditt ansiktes ljus vandrar de.
17 I ditt namn gläder de sig alltid,
genom din rättfärdighet upphöjs de.
18 Ty du är deras styrka och prydnad,
genom din nåd upphöjer du vårt horn.
19 Ty han som är vår sköld tillhör Herren,
vår kung tillhör Israels Helige.
20 På den tiden talade du i en syn
till dina fromma och sade:
"Jag har lagt hjälp i en hjältes hand,
jag har upphöjt en yngling ur folket.
21 Jag har funnit min tjänare David
och smort honom med min heliga olja.
22 Min hand skall uppehålla honom,
min arm skall styrka honom.
23 Ingen fiende har något att fordra av honom,
ingen orättfärdig skall förtrycka honom.
24 Jag skall krossa hans ovänner framför honom,
jag skall slå ner dem som hatar honom.
25 Min trofasthet och min nåd skall vara med honom,
i mitt namn skall hans horn bli upphöjt.
26 Jag skall lägga havet under hans hand,
strömmarna under hans högra hand.
27 Han skall ropa till mig: "Du är min Fader,
min Gud och min frälsnings klippa!"
28 Jag skall göra honom till den förstfödde,
till den högste bland kungarna på jorden.
29 Jag skall bevara min nåd åt honom för evigt,
mitt förbund med honom skall stå fast.
30 Jag skall låta hans efterkommande bestå till evig tid
och hans tron så länge himlen varar.
31 Om hans barn överger min undervisning
och inte följer mina befallningar,
32 om de bryter mot mina lagar
och inte håller mina bud,
33 då skall jag straffa deras överträdelse med ris
och deras missgärning med plågor.
34 Men min nåd skall jag inte ta ifrån honom,
jag skall inte svika i trofasthet.
35 Jag skall inte bryta mitt förbund,
vad mina läppar har talat skall jag inte ändra.
36 En gång har jag svurit vid min helighet,
och mitt löfte till David skall jag inte bryta.
37 Hans efterkommande skall bestå för evigt
och hans tron inför mig så länge som solen,
38 som månen skall den bestå för evigt.
Och trofast är vittnet i skyn." Sela.
39 Men nu har du i vrede stött bort
och förkastat din smorde.
40 Du har upplöst förbundet med din tjänare,
du har vanärat hans krona
och kastat den till marken.
41 Du har brutit ner alla hans murar
och lagt hans fästen i spillror.
42 Alla som går förbi på vägen plundrar honom,
han blir hånad av sina grannar.
43 Du har lyft hans ovänners högra hand
till glädje för alla hans fiender.
44 Du har låtit hans skarpa svärd vika tillbaka
och inte hållit honom uppe i striden.
45 Du har gjort slut på hans glans
och slagit hans tron till jorden.
46 Du har förkortat hans ungdoms dagar,
du har höljt honom i skam. Sela.
47 Herre, hur länge
skall du gömma dig helt och hållet?
Hur länge skall din vrede brinna som eld?
48 Tänk på hur kort mitt liv är,
hur förgängliga du skapat alla människors barn.
49 Kan en man leva
och slippa se döden,
kan han rädda sin själ från dödsrikets våld? Sela.
50 Herre, var är dina forna nådegärningar,
som du i trofasthet lovade David med ed?
51 Herre, tänk på din tjänares vanära,
på vad jag måste uthärda av alla folk.
52 Herre, tänk på hur dina fiender hånar,
hur de hånar din smordes fotspår.
53 Lovad vare Herren i evighet! Amen, amen.

2 Canterò senza fine le grazie del Signore,
con la mia bocca annunzierò la tua fedeltà nei secoli,
3 perché hai detto: «La mia grazia rimane per sempre»;
la tua fedeltà è fondata nei cieli.
4 «Ho stretto un'alleanza con il mio eletto,
ho giurato a Davide mio servo:
5 stabilirò per sempre la tua discendenza,
ti darò un trono che duri nei secoli».
6 I cieli cantano le tue meraviglie, Signore,
la tua fedeltà nell'assemblea dei santi.
7 Chi sulle nubi è uguale al Signore,
chi è simile al Signore tra gli angeli di Dio?
8 Dio è tremendo nell'assemblea dei santi,
grande e terribile tra quanti lo circondano.
9 Chi è uguale a te, Signore, Dio degli eserciti?
Sei potente, Signore, e la tua fedeltà ti fa corona.
10 Tu domini l'orgoglio del mare,
tu plachi il tumulto dei suoi flutti.
11 Tu hai calpestato Raab come un vinto,
con braccio potente hai disperso i tuoi nemici.
12 Tuoi sono i cieli, tua è la terra,
tu hai fondato il mondo e quanto contiene;
13 il settentrione e il mezzogiorno tu li hai creati,
il Tabor e l'Ermon cantano il tuo nome.
14 E' potente il tuo braccio,
forte la tua mano, alta la tua destra.
15 Giustizia e diritto sono la base del tuo trono,
grazia e fedeltà precedono il tuo volto.
16 Beato il popolo che ti sa acclamare
e cammina, o Signore, alla luce del tuo volto:
17 esulta tutto il giorno nel tuo nome,
nella tua giustizia trova la sua gloria.
18 Perché tu sei il vanto della sua forza
e con il tuo favore innalzi la nostra potenza.
19 Perché del Signore è il nostro scudo,
il nostro re, del Santo d'Israele.
20 Un tempo parlasti in visione ai tuoi santi dicendo:
«Ho portato aiuto a un prode,
ho innalzato un eletto tra il mio popolo.
21 Ho trovato Davide, mio servo,
con il mio santo olio l'ho consacrato;
22 la mia mano è il suo sostegno,
il mio braccio è la sua forza.
23 Su di lui non trionferà il nemico,
né l'opprimerà l'iniquo.
24 Annienterò davanti a lui i suoi nemici
e colpirò quelli che lo odiano.
25 La mia fedeltà e la mia grazia saranno con lui
e nel mio nome si innalzerà la sua potenza.
26 Stenderò sul mare la sua mano
e sui fiumi la sua destra.
27 Egli mi invocherà: Tu sei mio padre,
mio Dio e roccia della mia salvezza.
28 Io lo costituirò mio primogenito,
il più alto tra i re della terra.
29 Gli conserverò sempre la mia grazia,
la mia alleanza gli sarà fedele.
30 Stabilirò per sempre la sua discendenza,
il suo trono come i giorni del cielo.
31 Se i suoi figli abbandoneranno la mia legge
e non seguiranno i miei decreti,
32 se violeranno i miei statuti
e non osserveranno i miei comandi,
33 punirò con la verga il loro peccato
e con flagelli la loro colpa.
34 Ma non gli toglierò la mia grazia
e alla mia fedeltà non verrò mai meno.
35 Non violerò la mia alleanza,
non muterò la mia promessa.
36 Sulla mia santità ho giurato una volta per sempre:
certo non mentirò a Davide.
37 In eterno durerà la sua discendenza,
il suo trono davanti a me quanto il sole,
38 sempre saldo come la luna,
testimone fedele nel cielo».
39 Ma tu lo hai respinto e ripudiato,
ti sei adirato contro il tuo consacrato;
40 hai rotto l'alleanza con il tuo servo,
hai profanato nel fango la sua corona.
41 Hai abbattuto tutte le sue mura
e diroccato le sue fortezze;
42 tutti i passanti lo hanno depredato,
è divenuto lo scherno dei suoi vicini.
43 Hai fatto trionfare la destra dei suoi rivali,
hai fatto gioire tutti i suoi nemici.
44 Hai smussato il filo della sua spada
e non l'hai sostenuto nella battaglia.
45 Hai posto fine al suo splendore,
hai rovesciato a terra il suo trono.
46 Hai abbreviato i giorni della sua giovinezza
e lo hai coperto di vergogna.
47 Fino a quando, Signore,
continuerai a tenerti nascosto,
arderà come fuoco la tua ira?
48 Ricorda quant'è breve la mia vita.
Perché quasi un nulla hai creato ogni uomo?
49 Quale vivente non vedrà la morte,
sfuggirà al potere degli inferi?
50 Dove sono, Signore, le tue grazie di un tempo,
che per la tua fedeltà hai giurato a Davide?
51 Ricorda, Signore, l'oltraggio dei tuoi servi:
porto nel cuore le ingiurie di molti popoli,
52 con le quali, Signore, i tuoi nemici insultano,
insultano i passi del tuo consacrato.

89 I will always sing about the Lord's faithful love.
I will tell my children and my grandchildren
that you are always faithful.
2 Yes! Your faithful love will always continue to be strong.
You will always be faithful,
as the skies will always be there.
3 The Lord has said,
‘I have made a covenant with the king that I chose.
I have made this strong promise to my servant David:
4 “Someone from your family will always be king.
They will rule for ever.” ’
Selah.
5 Lord, everything in heaven praises you
for the great things that you have done.
Yes, your angels meet together to praise you,
because you are always faithful.
6 In all the heavens,
there is no one like you, Lord!
No angel in heaven is equal to you.
7 When the angels meet together in heaven,
they respect you with fear.
All who meet round your throne in heaven respect you,
as you deserve.
8 Lord God Almighty,
no one is as powerful as you!
You are always faithful in all that you do!
9 You rule over the powerful sea.
When the waves rise up,
you make them quiet again.
10 You caught the monster Rahab
and you killed it!
With your power,
you chased away your enemies.
11 The heavens belong to you
and so does the earth.
You made the world
and everything that is in it.
12 You made everything,
from the north to the south.
Tabor and Hermon are happy to praise your name.[b]
13 You have great strength,
and you can do great things.
You hold up your right hand,
as you win against your enemies.
14 As King, you rule with justice,
and you always do what is right.
You show your faithful love and you are faithful.
15 You have truly blessed the people
who know how to praise you, Lord.
They know that you are pleased with them.
16 They praise your name all the time.
Your justice makes them happy.
17 You give strength and glory to your people.
Because you are kind to us,
we win against our enemies.
18 Yes! Our king belongs to the Lord,
and he protects us like a shield.
Our king belongs to the Holy One of Israel.
God's covenant with David
19 A long time ago, Lord,
you spoke to your servants.
In a vision, you said to them,
‘I have helped a brave soldier to be strong.
I have chosen as king
a young man from among the people.
20 I have found David, my servant.
I have poured my special oil on him,
to make him king.
21 I will help him with my power,
so that he is strong.
22 No enemy will win against him.
No cruel people will have power to hurt him.
23 I will destroy his enemies in front of him
I will kill those who hate him.
24 I will always be faithful
and show him my faithful love.
By my name he will win against his enemies.
25 I will cause his kingdom to reach
beyond the sea and the rivers.
26 The king will say to me, “You are my Father.
You are my God.
You protect me and you rescue me.”
27 Also, I will make him my firstborn son.
He will be the greatest of the kings of the earth.
28 I will always love him with my faithful love.
I will never change the covenant
that I have made with him.
29 Someone from his family will always be king.
They will rule for ever,
as long as there are skies above us.
30-31 But I will punish his descendants,
if they do not accept my laws.
If they do not obey my teaching, my rules, or my commands,
32 I will punish them.
Because of their sins,
I will give them much pain.
33 But I will not take my faithful love away from David.
I will always be faithful,
and I will do what I have promised to him.
34 I will not spoil the covenant that I have made with him.
I will always keep my promises.
35 I made that promise to David at one time,
and that will not change.
I promised him by my holy name
and I will never deceive him.
36 His descendants will always rule.
His kingdom will continue to be there for ever,
as long as the sun shines.
37 As the moon is always there in the sky,
to show that God is faithful,
David's kingdom will also continue.’

A sad song
38 But now you have turned against your king.
You have become angry with the king that you have chosen.
39 You have spoiled the covenant
that you made with your servant.
You have thrown his crown into the dirt.
40 You have knocked down all the walls of his city.
You have destroyed all his strong places.
41 Every stranger robs him of his things.
His neighbours laugh at him.
42 You have made his enemies strong,
so that they win against him and they are happy.
43 You have made his weapons useless,
so that he cannot beat his enemies in war.
44 You have taken away his authority as king.
You have knocked down his throne to the ground.
45 He no longer has the strength of a young man.
You have dressed him in clothes of shame.

46 Lord, how long will this continue?
Will you hide yourself from us for ever?
Will your anger continue to burn like a fire?
47 Remember that my life is very short!
People are weak and their lives seem useless.
Why do you make people like that?
48 Nobody can continue to live and never die.
Nobody can escape from the power of death.
49 My Lord, where is the faithful love
that you showed to us in past times?
Where are the blessings that you promised to David?
50 My Lord, look at how people are insulting me!
People from all nations laugh at me, your servant.
51 Lord, your enemies insult the king that you have chosen.
Wherever I go, they insult me!
52 Praise the Lord as he deserves!

- 89:1 God had made special promises to David as part of a covenant. See 2 Samuel 7:12-17. He promised that someone from David's family would always be king. In this psalm, the writer sees that all these promises have not yet become true. So the writer is sad. He wants to know if God has forgotten about his promises to David.
- 89:12 Tabor and Hermon are the names of mountains in Israel.
