Praise in the Night

A Song of Ascents.

Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord,
    who stand by night in the house of the Lord!(A)
Lift up your hands to the holy place,
    and bless the Lord.(B)

May the Lord, maker of heaven and earth,
    bless you from Zion.

Psalm 135

Praise for God’s Goodness and Might

Praise the Lord!
    Praise the name of the Lord;
    give praise, O servants of the Lord,
you who stand in the house of the Lord,
    in the courts of the house of our God.(C)

    sing to his name, for he is gracious.(D)

    Israel as his own possession.(E)

For I know that the Lord is great;
    our Lord is above all gods.(F)
Whatever the Lord pleases he does,
    in heaven and on earth,
    in the seas and all deeps.(G)

    and killed mighty kings—(K)

12 and gave their land as a heritage,
    a heritage to his people Israel.(M)

13 Your name, O Lord, endures forever,
    your renown, O Lord, throughout all ages.(N)
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people
    and have compassion on his servants.(O)

15 The idols of the nations are silver and gold,
    the work of human hands.(P)
16 They have mouths, but they do not speak;
    they have eyes, but they do not see;
17 they have ears, but they do not hear,
    a nose, but there is no breath in their mouths.
18 Those who make them
    and all who trust them
    shall become like them.

19 O house of Israel, bless the Lord!
    O house of Aaron, bless the Lord!(Q)
20 O house of Levi, bless the Lord!

21 Blessed be the Lord from Zion,
    he who resides in Jerusalem.
Praise the Lord!(S)

Psalm 137

Lament over the Destruction of Jerusalem

By the rivers of Babylon—
    there we sat down, and there we wept
    when we remembered Zion.(AM)
On the willows[d] there
    we hung up our harps.
For there our captors
    asked us for songs,
and our tormentors asked for mirth, saying,
    “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”(AN)

How could we sing the Lord’s song
    in a foreign land?
If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
    let my right hand wither!
Let my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth,
    if I do not remember you,
if I do not set Jerusalem
    above my highest joy.(AO)

Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites
    the day of Jerusalem’s fall,
how they said, “Tear it down! Tear it down!
    Down to its foundations!”(AP)
O daughter Babylon, you devastator![e]
    Happy shall they be who pay you back
    what you have done to us!(AQ)
Happy shall they be who take your little ones
    and dash them against the rock!(AR)
