Psalm 98

A Call to Praise the Lord for His Righteousness.

A Psalm.

98 Sing a ^(A)new song to the Lord,
For He has done ^(B)wonderful things,
His ^(C)right hand and His ^(D)holy arm have ^[a]gained the victory for Him.
²^(E)The Lord has made His salvation known;
He has ^(F)revealed His righteousness in the sight of the nations.
³He has ^(G)remembered His graciousness and His faithfulness to the house of Israel;
^(H)All the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

⁴^(I)Shout joyfully to the Lord, all the earth;
^(J)Be cheerful and sing for joy and sing praises.
⁵Sing praises to the Lord with the ^(K)lyre,
With the lyre and the ^[b]^(L)sound of melody.
⁶With ^(M)trumpets and the sound of the horn
^(N)Shout joyfully before ^(O)the King, the Lord.

⁷May the ^(P)sea roar and ^[c]all it contains,
The ^(Q)world and those who dwell in it.
⁸May the ^(R)rivers clap their hands,
May the ^(S)mountains sing together for joy
⁹Before the Lord, for He is coming to ^(T)judge the earth;
He will judge the world with righteousness
And ^(U)the peoples with fairness.

^(A)Praise the Lord, my soul!
²I will praise the Lord ^(B)while I live;
I will ^(C)sing praises to my God while I ^[c]have my being.
³^(D)Do not trust in noblemen,
In ^[d]mortal ^(E)man, in whom there is ^(F)no salvation.
⁴His ^(G)spirit departs, he ^(H)returns to ^[e]the earth;
On that very day his ^(I)plans perish.
⁵^(J)Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
Whose ^(K)hope is in the Lord his God,
⁶Who ^(L)made heaven and earth,
The ^(M)sea and everything that is in them;
Who ^(N)keeps ^[f]faith forever;
⁷Who ^(O)executes justice for the oppressed;
Who ^(P)gives food to the hungry.
The Lord ^(Q)frees the prisoners.

⁸The Lord ^(R)opens the eyes of those who are blind;
The Lord ^(S)raises up those who are bowed down;
The Lord ^(T)loves the righteous.
⁹The Lord ^(U)watches over strangers;
He ^[g]^(V)supports the fatherless and the widow,
But He ^[h]thwarts ^(W)the way of the wicked.
¹⁰The Lord will ^(X)reign forever,
Your God, Zion, to all generations.

Leviticus 26:1-20

Blessings of Obedience

26 ‘You shall not make for yourselves ^(A)idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves ^(B)a carved image or ^(C)a memorial stone, nor shall you place a ^(D)figured stone in your land to bow down ^[a]to it; for I am the Lord your God. ²^(E)You shall keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; I am the Lord. ³^(F)If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to carry them out, ⁴then ^(G)I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit. ⁵^(H)Indeed, your threshing season will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. So you will eat your ^[b]food to the full and ^(I)live securely in your land. ⁶^(J)I shall also grant peace in the land, so that ^(K)you may lie down, with no one to make you afraid. ^(L)I shall also eliminate harmful animals from the land, and ^(M)no sword will pass through your land. ⁷Instead, you will chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword; ⁸^(N)five of you will chase a hundred, and a hundred of you will chase ten thousand; and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. ⁹So I will turn toward you and ^(O)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will ^(P)confirm My covenant with you. ¹⁰And ^(Q)you will eat the old supply, and clear out the old because of the new. ¹¹^(R)Moreover, I will make My ^[c]dwelling among you, and My soul will not ^[d]reject you. ¹²^(S)I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. ¹³^(T)I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and ^(U)I broke your yoke and made you walk erect.

Penalties of Disobedience

¹⁴‘^(V)But if you do not obey Me and do not carry out all these commandments, ¹⁵if, instead, you ^(W)reject My statutes, and if your soul loathes My ordinances so as not to carry out all My commandments, but rather to ^(X)break My covenant, ¹⁶I, in turn, will do this to you: I will ^[e]summon a ^(Y)sudden terror against you, consumption and fever that will make the eyes fail and the ^(Z)soul languish; also, ^(AA)you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it. ¹⁷And I will set My face against you so that you will be defeated before your enemies; and ^(AB)those who hate you will rule over you, and ^(AC)you will flee when no one is pursuing you. ¹⁸If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will punish you ^(AD)seven times more for your sins. ¹⁹I will also ^(AE)break down your pride of power; and I will make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. ²⁰^(AF)Your strength will be consumed uselessly, for your land will not yield its produce and the trees of the land will not yield their fruit.

A Call to Prayer

2 First of all, then, I urge that ^(A)requests, prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made in behalf of all people, ²^(B)for kings and all who are in ^[a]authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and ^[b]dignity. ³This is good and acceptable in the sight of ^(C)God our Savior, ⁴^(D)who wants all people to be ^(E)saved and to ^(F)come to the ^[c]knowledge of the truth. ⁵For there is ^(G)one God, and ^(H)one mediator also between God and mankind, the ^(I)man Christ Jesus, ⁶who ^(J)gave Himself as a ransom for all, the ^(K)testimony ^[d]given at ^[e]^(L)the proper time.

The Sower Explained

¹⁸“^(A)Listen then to the parable of the sower. ¹⁹When anyone hears ^(B)the ^[a]word of the kingdom and does not understand it, ^(C)the evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart. This is the one sown with seed beside the road. ²⁰The one sown with seed on the rocky places, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; ²¹yet he has no firm root in himself, but is only temporary, and when affliction or persecution occurs because of the ^[b]word, immediately he ^[c]^(D)falls away. ²²And the one sown with seed among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, and the anxiety of ^(E)the ^[d]world and the ^(F)deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it ^[e]becomes unfruitful. ²³But the one sown with seed on the good soil, this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces, some ^(G)a hundred, some sixty, and some thirty times as much.”
