Psalm 96

A Call to Worship the Lord the Righteous Judge.

96 ^(A)Sing to the Lord a ^(B)new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
²Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
^(C)Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
³Tell of ^(D)His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
⁴For ^(E)great is the Lord, and ^(F)greatly to be praised;
He is to be ^(G)feared ^(H)above all gods.
⁵For ^(I)all the gods of the peoples are ^[a]idols,
But ^(J)the Lord made the heavens.
⁶^(K)Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.

⁷^[b]Ascribe to the Lord, you ^(L)families of the peoples,
^[c]^(M)Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
⁸^[d]Ascribe to the Lord the ^(N)glory of His name;
Bring an ^[e]^(O)offering and come into His courtyards.
⁹^(P)Worship the Lord in ^[f]holy attire;
^(Q)Tremble before Him, all the earth.
¹⁰Say among the nations, “^(R)The Lord reigns;
Indeed, the ^(S)world is firmly established, it will not be moved;
He will ^(T)judge the peoples fairly.”

¹¹May the ^(U)heavens be joyful, and may the ^(V)earth rejoice;
May ^(W)the sea ^[g]roar, and ^[h]all it contains;
¹²May the ^(X)field be jubilant, and all that is in it.
Then all the ^(Y)trees of the forest will sing for joy
¹³Before the Lord, ^(Z)for He is coming,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
^(AA)He will judge the world in righteousness,
And the peoples in His faithfulness.

148 ^[a]Praise ^[b]the Lord!
Praise the Lord ^(A)from the heavens;
Praise Him ^(B)in the heights!
²Praise Him, ^(C)all His angels;
Praise Him, ^(D)all His heavenly armies!
³Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all stars of light!
⁴Praise Him, ^[c]^(E)highest heavens,
And the ^(F)waters that are above the heavens!
⁵They are to praise the name of the Lord,
For ^(G)He commanded and they were created.
⁶He has also ^(H)established them forever and ever;
He has made a ^(I)decree, and it will not pass away.

⁷Praise the Lord from the earth,
^(J)Sea monsters, and all the ocean ^(K)depths;

¹³They are to praise the name of the Lord,

^(Y)Praise for all His godly ones,

Jeremiah 31:27-34

A New Covenant

²⁷“Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will ^(A)sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of mankind and the seed of animals. ²⁸And just as I have ^(B)watched over them to ^(C)uproot them, tear them down, ruin, destroy, and bring disaster on them, so I will watch over them to ^(D)build and to plant them,” declares the Lord.

²⁹“In those days they will no longer say,
‘^(E)The fathers have eaten sour grapes,
^[a]But it is the children’s teeth that have become blunt.’

³⁰But ^(F)everyone will die for his own wrongdoing; each person who eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will become blunt.

³¹“^(G)Behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will make a ^(H)new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, ³²not like the ^(I)covenant which I made with their fathers on the day I ^(J)took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My ^(K)covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the Lord. ³³“For ^(L)this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the Lord: “^(M)I will put My law within them and write it on their heart; and ^(N)I will be their God, and they shall be My people. ³⁴They will ^(O)not teach again, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they will all ^(P)know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the Lord, “for I will ^(Q)forgive their wrongdoing, and their ^(R)sin I will no longer remember.”

Be Imitators of God

5 ^(A)Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; ²and ^(B)walk in love, just as Christ also ^(C)loved ^[a]you and ^(D)gave Himself up for us, an ^(E)offering and a sacrifice to God ^[b]as a ^(F)fragrant aroma.

³But ^(G)sexual immorality ^[c]or any impurity or greed must not even be mentioned among you, as is proper among ^[d]saints; ⁴and there must be no ^(H)filthiness ^[e]or foolish talk, or vulgar joking, which ^(I)are not fitting, but rather ^(J)giving of thanks. ⁵For this you know with certainty, that ^(K)no sexually immoral or ^[f]impure or greedy person, which ^[g]amounts to an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom ^(L)of Christ and God.

⁶^(M)See that no one deceives you with empty words, for because of these things ^(N)the wrath of God comes upon ^(O)the ^[h]sons of disobedience. ⁷Therefore do not become ^(P)partners with them; ⁸for ^(Q)you were once ^(R)darkness, but now you are light in the Lord; walk as ^(S)children of light ⁹(for ^(T)the fruit of the light consists in all ^(U)goodness, righteousness, and truth), ¹⁰^[i]^(V)as you try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. ¹¹^(W)Do not participate in the useless ^(X)deeds of ^(Y)darkness, but instead even ^(Z)expose them; ¹²for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. ¹³But all things become visible ^(AA)when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. ¹⁴For this reason ^[j]it says,

“^(AB)Awake, sleeper,
And arise from ^(AC)the dead,
And Christ ^(AD)will shine on you.”

¹⁵So then, ^[k]be careful how you ^(AE)walk, not ^(AF)as unwise people but as wise, ¹⁶^[l]^(AG)making the most of your time, because ^(AH)the days are evil. ¹⁷Therefore do not be foolish, but ^(AI)understand what the will of the Lord is. ¹⁸And ^(AJ)do not get drunk with wine, ^[m]in which there is ^(AK)debauchery, but be ^(AL)filled with the Spirit, ¹⁹^(AM)speaking to ^[n]one another in ^(AN)psalms and ^(AO)hymns and spiritual ^(AP)songs, ^(AQ)singing and making melody with your hearts to the Lord; ²⁰^(AR)always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to our ^(AS)God and Father; ²¹^[o]^(AT)and subject yourselves to one another in the ^[p]^(AU)fear of Christ.

Marriage like Christ and the Church

²²^(AV)Wives, ^(AW)subject yourselves to your own husbands, ^(AX)as to the Lord. ²³For ^(AY)the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the ^(AZ)head of the church, He Himself ^(BA)being the Savior of the body. ²⁴But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything.

²⁵^(BB)Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and ^(BC)gave Himself up for her, ²⁶^(BD)so that He might sanctify her, having ^(BE)cleansed her by the ^(BF)washing of water with ^(BG)the word, ²⁷that He might ^(BH)present to Himself the church ^[q]in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she would be ^(BI)holy and blameless. ²⁸So husbands also ought to ^(BJ)love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; ²⁹for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, ³⁰because we are ^(BK)parts of His ^(BL)body. ³¹^(BM)For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. ³²This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church.

⁹^(A)As Jesus went on from there, He saw a man called ^(B)Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s office; and He *said to him, “^(C)Follow Me!” And he got up and followed Him.

¹⁰Then it happened that as ^[a]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and ^[b]sinners came and began dining with Jesus and His disciples. ¹¹And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “^(D)Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” ¹²But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not ^(E)those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. ¹³Now go and learn ^[c]^(F)what this means: ‘^(G)I desire ^[d]compassion, ^[e]rather than sacrifice,’ for ^(H)I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

The Question about Fasting

¹⁴Then the disciples of John *came to Him, asking, “Why do we and ^(I)the Pharisees fast, but Your disciples do not fast?” ¹⁵And Jesus said to them, “The ^[f]attendants of the groom cannot mourn as long as the groom is with them, can they? But the days will come when the groom is taken away from them, and then they will fast. ¹⁶But no one puts a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; for ^[g]the patch pulls away from the garment, and a worse tear results. ¹⁷Nor do people put new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the wineskins burst, and the wine pours out and the wineskins are ruined; but they put new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”
