The Consecration of Aaron and His Sons

8 Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ² “^(A)Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the ^(B)garments and ^(C)the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, ³ and assemble all the congregation at the doorway of the tent of meeting.” ⁴ So Moses did just as the Lord commanded him. When the congregation was assembled at the doorway of the tent of meeting, ⁵ Moses said to the congregation, “This is the thing which the Lord has commanded us to do.”

⁶ Then ^(D)Moses had Aaron and his sons come near, and he ^(E)washed them with water. ⁷ Then he ^(F)put the tunic on ^[a]Aaron and wrapped his waist with the sash, and clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him; and he wrapped his waist with the artistic band of the ephod, ^[b]with which he fitted it to him. ⁸ He then placed the ^[c]breastpiece on him, and in the ^[d]breastpiece he put the ^[e](G)Urim and the Thummim. ⁹ He also placed the turban on his head, and on the turban, at its front, he placed ^(H)the golden plate, the holy crown, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

¹⁰ Moses then took ^(I)the anointing oil and anointed the ^[f]tabernacle and everything that was in it, and consecrated them. ¹¹ He also sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to ^(J)consecrate them. ¹² Then he poured some of the ^(K)anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him. ^13 (L)Next Moses had Aaron’s sons come near, and he clothed them with tunics and wrapped their waists with sashes, and bound ^[g]caps on them, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

³⁰ So Moses ^(A)took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, and his sons, and the garments of his sons with him.

³¹ Then Moses said to Aaron and to his sons, “^(B)Boil the flesh at the doorway of the tent of meeting, and eat it there together with the bread which is in the basket of the ordination offering, just as I commanded, ^(C)saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ ³² And ^(D)the remainder of the flesh and of the bread you shall burn in the fire. ³³ And ^(E)you shall not go outside the doorway of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the day that the period of your ordination is fulfilled; for he will ^[a]ordain you through seven days. ³⁴ The Lord has commanded us to do as has been done this day, to make atonement on your behalf. ³⁵ At the doorway of the tent of meeting, moreover, you shall remain day and night for seven days and ^(F)fulfill your duty to the Lord, so that you will not die; for so I have been commanded.” ³⁶ Aaron and his sons did all the things which the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Jesus, the Example

12 Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s ^(A)rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s ^(B)run with ^(C)endurance the race that is set before us, ² looking only at Jesus, the ^[a](D)originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him ^(E)endured the cross, ^(F)despising the shame, and has ^(G)sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

³ For ^(H)consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary ^[b](I)and lose heart.

A Father’s Discipline

^4 (J)You have not yet resisted ^[c](K)to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin; ⁵ and you have forgotten the exhortation which is addressed to you as sons,

⁷ It is for discipline that you endure; ^(P)God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? ⁸ But if you are without discipline, ^(Q)of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. ⁹ Furthermore, we had ^[d]earthly fathers to discipline us, and we ^(R)respected them; shall we not much more be subject to ^(S)the Father of ^[e]spirits, and ^(T)live? ¹⁰ For they disciplined us for a short time as seemed best to them, but He disciplines us for our good, ^(U)so that we may share His holiness. ^11 (V)For the moment, all discipline seems not to be pleasant, but painful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterward it yields the ^(W)peaceful fruit of righteousness.

¹² Therefore, ^[f](X)strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, ¹³ and ^(Y)make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is impaired may not be dislocated, but rather ^(Z)be healed.

^14 (AA)Pursue peace with all people, and the ^(AB)holiness without which no one will ^(AC)see the Lord.

¹⁶ And He came to ^(A)Nazareth, where He had been brought up; and as was His custom, ^(B)He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath, and ^(C)stood up to read. ¹⁷ And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

²⁰ And He ^(F)rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and ^(G)sat down; and the eyes of all the people in the synagogue were intently directed at Him. ²¹ Now He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your ^[a]hearing.” ²² And all the people were ^[b]speaking well of Him, and admiring the ^[c]gracious words which were coming from His ^[d]lips; and yet they were saying, “^(H)Is this not Joseph’s son?” ²³ And He said to them, “No doubt you will ^[e]quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! All the miracles that we heard were done ^(I)in Capernaum, do here in ^(J)your hometown as well.’” ²⁴ But He said, “Truly I say to you, ^(K)no prophet is welcome in his hometown. ²⁵ But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel ^(L)in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a ^[f]severe famine came over all the land; ²⁶ and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to ^[g](M)Zarephath, in the land of ^(N)Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. ²⁷ And there were many with leprosy in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was ^[h]cleansed, but only ^(O)Naaman the Syrian.” ²⁸ And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things; ²⁹ and they got up and ^(P)drove Him out of the city, and brought Him to the ^[i]crest of the hill on which their city had been built, so that they could throw Him down from the cliff. ³⁰ But He ^(Q)passed through their midst and went on His way.
