I Will Sing of the Steadfast Love of the Lord

89 ^(B)I will sing of ^(C)the steadfast love of the Lord, forever;
    with my mouth I will make known your ^(D)faithfulness to all generations.
²For I said, ^(E)“Steadfast love will be built up forever;
    in the heavens ^(F)you will establish your ^(G)faithfulness.”
³You have said, “I have made ^(H)a covenant with my ^(I)chosen one;
    I have ^(J)sworn to David my servant:
⁴‘I will establish your ^(K)offspring forever,
    and build your ^(L)throne for all generations.’” Selah

⁵Let ^(M)the heavens praise your ^(N)wonders, O Lord,
    your faithfulness in the assembly of ^(O)the holy ones!
⁶For ^(P)who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?
    ^(Q)Who among the heavenly beings^[b] is like the Lord,
⁷a God greatly ^(R)to be feared in the council of ^(S)the holy ones,
    and awesome above all ^(T)who are around him?
⁸O Lord God of hosts,
    ^(U)who is mighty as you are, O ^(V)Lord,
    with your faithfulness all around you?
⁹You rule the raging of the sea;
    when its waves rise, you ^(W)still them.
¹⁰You ^(X)crushed ^(Y)Rahab like a carcass;
    you ^(Z)scattered your enemies with your mighty arm.
¹¹^(AA)The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours;
    ^(AB)the world and all that is in it, you have ^(AC)founded them.
¹²^(AD)The north and the south, you have created them;
    ^(AE)Tabor and ^(AF)Hermon ^(AG)joyously praise your name.
¹³You have a mighty arm;
    strong is your hand, high your right hand.
¹⁴^(AH)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne;
    ^(AI)steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.
¹⁵Blessed are the people who know ^(AJ)the festal shout,
    who walk, O Lord, in ^(AK)the light of your face,
¹⁶who exult in your ^(AL)name all the day
    and in your righteousness are ^(AM)exalted.
¹⁷For you are ^(AN)the glory of their strength;
    by your favor our ^(AO)horn is exalted.
¹⁸For our ^(AP)shield belongs to the Lord,
    our king to ^(AQ)the Holy One of Israel.

¹⁹^(AR)Of old you spoke in a vision to your godly one,^[c] and said:
    “I have ^(AS)granted help to one who is ^(AT)mighty;
    I have exalted one ^(AU)chosen from the people.
²⁰^(AV)I have found David, my servant;
    with my holy oil I have ^(AW)anointed him,
²¹so that my ^(AX)hand shall be established with him;
    my arm also shall strengthen him.
²²The enemy shall not outwit him;
    ^(AY)the wicked shall not humble him.
²³I will ^(AZ)crush his foes before him
    and strike down those who hate him.
²⁴My ^(BA)faithfulness and my ^(BB)steadfast love shall be with him,
    and in my name shall his ^(BC)horn be exalted.
²⁵I will set his hand on ^(BD)the sea
    and his right hand on ^(BE)the rivers.
²⁶He shall cry to me, ‘You are my ^(BF)Father,
    my God, and ^(BG)the Rock of my salvation.’
²⁷And I will make him the ^(BH)firstborn,
    ^(BI)the highest of the kings of the earth.
²⁸My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,
    and my ^(BJ)covenant will stand firm^[d] for him.
²⁹I will establish his ^(BK)offspring forever
    and his ^(BL)throne as ^(BM)the days of the heavens.
³⁰^(BN)If his children forsake my law
    and do not walk according to my rules,^[e]
³¹if they violate my statutes
    and do not keep my commandments,
³²then I will punish their transgression with ^(BO)the rod
    and their iniquity with stripes,
³³but I will not remove from him my steadfast love
    or be false to my faithfulness.
³⁴I will not violate my ^(BP)covenant
    or alter the word that went forth from my lips.
³⁵Once for all I have sworn ^(BQ)by my holiness;
    I will not ^(BR)lie to David.
³⁶His ^(BS)offspring shall endure forever,
    ^(BT)his ^(BU)throne as long as ^(BV)the sun before me.
³⁷Like ^(BW)the moon it shall be established forever,
    ^(BX)a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah

³⁸But now you have ^(BY)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your ^(BZ)anointed.
³⁹You have ^(CA)renounced ^(CB)the covenant with your servant;
    you have ^(CC)defiled his ^(CD)crown in the dust.
⁴⁰You have ^(CE)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
⁴¹^(CF)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become ^(CG)the scorn of his neighbors.
⁴²You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
⁴³You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
⁴⁴You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
⁴⁵You have cut short ^(CH)the days of his youth;
    you have ^(CI)covered him with shame. Selah

⁴⁶^(CJ)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath ^(CK)burn like fire?
⁴⁷^(CL)Remember ^(CM)how short my ^(CN)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
⁴⁸^(CO)What man can live and never ^(CP)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of ^(CQ)Sheol? Selah

⁴⁹Lord, where is your ^(CR)steadfast love of old,
    which by your ^(CS)faithfulness you swore to David?
⁵⁰^(CT)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my ^(CU)heart the insults^[f] of all the many nations,
⁵¹with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock ^(CV)the footsteps of your ^(CW)anointed.

6 ^[a] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²“If anyone sins and ^(A)commits a breach of faith against the Lord by ^(B)deceiving his neighbor in ^(C)a matter of deposit or security, or through robbery, or ^(D)if he has oppressed his neighbor ³or ^(E)has found something lost and lied about it, ^(F)swearing falsely—in any of all the things that people do and sin thereby— ⁴if he has sinned and has realized his guilt and will restore ^(G)what he took by robbery or what he got by oppression or the deposit that was committed to him or the lost thing that he found ⁵or anything about which he has sworn falsely, he shall ^(H)restore it in full and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him to whom it belongs on the day he realizes his guilt. ⁶And he shall bring to the priest as his compensation to the Lord ^(I)a ram without blemish out of the flock, or its equivalent, for a guilt offering. ⁷^(J)And the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he shall be forgiven for any of the things that one may do and thereby become guilty.”

The Priests and the Offerings

⁸^[b] The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ⁹“Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering. The burnt offering shall be on the hearth on the altar all night until the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. ¹⁰And ^(K)the priest shall put on his linen garment and put his linen undergarment on his body, and he shall take up the ashes to which the fire has reduced the burnt offering on the altar and put them ^(L)beside the altar. ¹¹Then ^(M)he shall take off his garments and put on other garments and carry the ashes ^(N)outside the camp to a clean place. ¹²The fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not go out. The priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and he shall arrange the burnt offering on it and shall burn on it ^(O)the fat of the peace offerings. ¹³Fire shall be kept burning on the altar continually; it shall not go out.

¹⁴“And this is the law of ^(P)the grain offering. The sons of Aaron shall offer it before the Lord in front of the altar. ¹⁵And one shall take from it a handful of the fine flour of the grain offering and its oil and all the frankincense that is on the grain offering and burn this as its ^(Q)memorial portion on the altar, a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ¹⁶And ^(R)the rest of it Aaron and his sons shall eat. It shall be eaten unleavened ^(S)in a holy place. In the court of the tent of meeting they shall eat it. ¹⁷^(T)It shall not be baked with leaven. ^(U)I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. ^(V)It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. ¹⁸Every male among the children of Aaron may eat of it, as decreed forever throughout your generations, from the Lord's food offerings. Whatever touches them shall become holy.”

¹⁹The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁰^(W)“This is the offering that Aaron and his sons shall offer to the Lord on the day when he is anointed: a ^(X)tenth of an ephah^[c] of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half in the evening. ²¹It shall be made with oil ^(Y)on a griddle. You shall bring it ^(Z)well mixed, in baked^[d] pieces like a grain offering, and offer it for a pleasing aroma to the Lord. ²²The priest from among Aaron's sons, who is anointed to succeed him, shall offer it to the Lord as decreed forever. ^(AA)The whole of it shall be burned. ²³Every grain offering of a priest shall be wholly burned. It shall not be eaten.”

²⁴The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ²⁵“Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, ^(AB)This is the law of the sin offering. ^(AC)In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord; ^(AD)it is most holy. ²⁶^(AE)The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it. ^(AF)In a holy place it shall be eaten, in the court of the tent of meeting. ²⁷Whatever touches its flesh shall be holy, and when any of its blood is splashed on a garment, you shall wash that on which it was splashed in a holy place. ²⁸And ^(AG)the earthenware vessel in which it is boiled ^(AH)shall be broken. But if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, that shall be scoured and rinsed in water. ²⁹Every male among the priests may eat of it; ^(AI)it is most holy. ³⁰^(AJ)But no sin offering shall be eaten from which any blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the Holy Place; it shall be burned up with fire.

Jesus Greater Than Moses

3 Therefore, holy brothers,^[a] you who share in ^(A)a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, ^(B)the apostle and high priest of our confession, ²who was faithful to him who appointed him, ^(C)just as Moses also was faithful in all God's^[b] house. ³For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. ⁴(For every house is built by someone, but ^(D)the builder of all things is God.) ⁵^(E)Now Moses was faithful in all God's house ^(F)as a servant, ^(G)to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, ⁶but Christ is faithful over God's house as ^(H)a son. And ^(I)we are his house, if indeed we ^(J)hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope.^[c]

A Rest for the People of God

⁷Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,

^(K)“Today, if you hear his voice,
⁸do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
    on the day of testing in the wilderness,
⁹where your fathers put me to the test
    and saw my works for ^(L)forty years.
¹⁰Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
    they have not known my ways.’
¹¹^(M)As I swore in my wrath,
    ‘They shall not enter my rest.’”

¹²Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from ^(N)the living God. ¹³But ^(O)exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by ^(P)the deceitfulness of sin. ¹⁴For we have come to share in Christ, ^(Q)if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. ¹⁵As it is said,

^(R)“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”

¹⁶For ^(S)who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not ^(T)all those who left Egypt led by Moses? ¹⁷And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, ^(U)whose bodies fell in the wilderness? ¹⁸And to whom did he swear that ^(V)they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? ¹⁹So we see that ^(W)they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
