38 But now you have (A)cast off and rejected;
    you are full of wrath against your (B)anointed.
39 You have (C)renounced (D)the covenant with your servant;
    you have (E)defiled his (F)crown in the dust.
40 You have (G)breached all his walls;
    you have laid his strongholds in ruins.
41 (H)All who pass by plunder him;
    he has become (I)the scorn of his neighbors.
42 You have exalted the right hand of his foes;
    you have made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You have also turned back the edge of his sword,
    and you have not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his splendor to cease
    and cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have cut short (J)the days of his youth;
    you have (K)covered him with shame. Selah

46 (L)How long, O Lord? Will you hide yourself forever?
    How long will your wrath (M)burn like fire?
47 (N)Remember (O)how short my (P)time is!
    For what vanity you have created all the children of man!
48 (Q)What man can live and never (R)see death?
    Who can deliver his soul from the power of (S)Sheol? Selah

49 Lord, where is your (T)steadfast love of old,
    which by your (U)faithfulness you swore to David?
50 (V)Remember, O Lord, how your servants are mocked,
    and how I bear in my (W)heart the insults[a] of all the many nations,
51 with which your enemies mock, O Lord,
    with which they mock (X)the footsteps of your (Y)anointed.

52 (Z)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Book Four

From Everlasting to Everlasting

A (AA)Prayer of Moses, the (AB)man of God.

90 Lord, you have been our (AC)dwelling place[b]
    in all generations.
(AD)Before the (AE)mountains were brought forth,
    or ever you had formed the earth and the world,
    (AF)from everlasting to everlasting you are God.

You return man to dust
    and say, (AG)“Return, (AH)O children of man!”[c]
For (AI)a thousand years in your sight
    are but as (AJ)yesterday when it is past,
    or as (AK)a watch in the night.

You (AL)sweep them away as with a flood; they are like (AM)a dream,
    like (AN)grass that is renewed in the morning:
in (AO)the morning it flourishes and is renewed;
    in the evening it (AP)fades and (AQ)withers.

For we are brought to an end by your anger;
    by your wrath we are dismayed.
You have (AR)set our iniquities before you,
    our (AS)secret sins in the light of your presence.

For all our days pass away under your wrath;
    we bring our years to an end like a sigh.
10 The years of our life are seventy,
    or even by reason of strength eighty;
yet their span[d] is but toil and trouble;
    they are soon gone, and we fly away.
11 Who considers the power of your anger,
    and your wrath according to the fear of you?

12 (AT)So teach us to number our days
    that we may get a heart of wisdom.
13 (AU)Return, O Lord! (AV)How long?
    Have (AW)pity on your servants!
14 Satisfy us in the (AX)morning with your steadfast love,
    that we may (AY)rejoice and be glad all our days.
15 Make us glad for as many days as you have (AZ)afflicted us,
    and for as many years as we have seen evil.
16 Let your (BA)work be shown to your servants,
    and your glorious power to their children.
17 Let the (BB)favor[e] of the Lord our God be upon us,
    and establish (BC)the work of our hands upon us;
    yes, establish the work of our hands!

My Refuge and My Fortress

91 He who dwells in (BD)the shelter of the Most High
    will abide in (BE)the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say[f] to the Lord, “My (BF)refuge and my (BG)fortress,
    my God, in whom I (BH)trust.”

For he will deliver you from (BI)the snare of the fowler
    and from the deadly pestilence.
He will (BJ)cover you with his pinions,
    and under his (BK)wings you will (BL)find refuge;
    his (BM)faithfulness is (BN)a shield and buckler.
(BO)You will not fear (BP)the terror of the night,
    nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness,
    nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

A thousand may fall at your side,
    ten thousand at your right hand,
    but it will not come near you.
You will only look with your eyes
    and (BQ)see the recompense of the wicked.

Because you have made the Lord your (BR)dwelling place—
    the Most High, who is my (BS)refuge[g]
10 (BT)no evil shall be allowed to befall you,
    (BU)no plague come near your tent.

11 (BV)For he will command his (BW)angels concerning you
    to (BX)guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you (BY)strike your foot against a stone.
13 You will tread on (BZ)the lion and the (CA)adder;
    the young lion and (CB)the serpent you will (CC)trample underfoot.
