Psalm 87-89
New American Standard Bible 1995
The Privileges of Citizenship in Zion.
A Psalm of the sons of Korah. A Song.
87 His (A)foundation is in the holy mountains.
2 The Lord (B)loves the gates of Zion
More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob.
3 (C)Glorious things are spoken of you,
O (D)city of God. [a]Selah.
4 “I shall mention [b](E)Rahab and Babylon [c]among those who know Me;
Behold, Philistia and (F)Tyre with [d](G)Ethiopia:
‘This one was born there.’”
5 But of Zion it shall be said, “This one and that one were born in her”;
And the Most High Himself will (H)establish her.
6 The Lord will count when He (I)registers the peoples,
“This one was born there.” Selah.
7 Then those who (J)sing as well as those who [e](K)play the flutes shall say,
“All my (L)springs of joy are in you.”
A Petition to Be Saved from Death.
A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah. For the choir director; according to Mahalath Leannoth. A [f]Maskil of Heman [g]the Ezrahite.
88 O Lord, the (M)God of my salvation,
I have (N)cried out by day and in the night before You.
2 Let my prayer (O)come before You;
(P)Incline Your ear to my cry!
3 For my (Q)soul has [h]had enough troubles,
And (R)my life has drawn near to [i]Sheol.
4 I am reckoned among those who (S)go down to the pit;
I have become like a man (T)without strength,
5 [j]Forsaken (U)among the dead,
Like the slain who lie in the grave,
Whom You remember no more,
And they are (V)cut off from Your hand.
6 You have put me in (W)the lowest pit,
In (X)dark places, in the (Y)depths.
7 Your wrath (Z)has rested upon me,
And You have afflicted me with (AA)all Your waves. [k]Selah.
8 You have removed (AB)my acquaintances far from me;
You have made me an [l](AC)object of loathing to them;
I am (AD)shut up and cannot go out.
9 My (AE)eye has wasted away because of affliction;
I have (AF)called upon You every day, O Lord;
I have (AG)spread out my [m]hands to You.
10 Will You perform wonders for the dead?
Will (AH)the [n]departed spirits rise and praise You? Selah.
11 Will Your lovingkindness be declared in the grave,
Your faithfulness in [o]Abaddon?
12 Will Your wonders be made known in the (AI)darkness?
And Your [p]righteousness in the land of forgetfulness?
13 But I, O Lord, have cried out (AJ)to You for help,
And (AK)in the morning my prayer comes before You.
14 O Lord, why (AL)do You reject my soul?
Why do You (AM)hide Your face from me?
15 I was afflicted and (AN)about to die from my youth on;
I suffer (AO)Your terrors; I am [q]overcome.
16 Your (AP)burning anger has passed over me;
Your terrors have [r](AQ)destroyed me.
17 They have (AR)surrounded me (AS)like water all day long;
They have (AT)encompassed me altogether.
18 You have removed (AU)lover and friend far from me;
My acquaintances are in darkness.
The Lord’s Covenant with David, and Israel’s Afflictions.
A [s]Maskil of [t]Ethan [u]the Ezrahite.
89 I will (AV)sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever;
To all generations I will (AW)make known Your (AX)faithfulness with my mouth.
2 For I have said, “(AY)Lovingkindness will be built up forever;
In the heavens You will establish Your (AZ)faithfulness.”
3 “I have made a covenant with (BA)My chosen;
I have (BB)sworn to David My servant,
4 I will establish your (BC)seed forever
And build up your (BD)throne to all generations.” [v]Selah.
5 The (BE)heavens will praise Your wonders, O Lord;
Your faithfulness also (BF)in the assembly of the (BG)holy ones.
6 For (BH)who in the skies is comparable to the Lord?
Who among the [w](BI)sons of the mighty is like the Lord,
7 A God (BJ)greatly feared in the council of the (BK)holy ones,
And (BL)awesome above all those who are around Him?
8 O Lord God of hosts, (BM)who is like You, O mighty [x]Lord?
Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
9 You rule the swelling of the sea;
When its waves rise, You (BN)still them.
10 You Yourself crushed [y](BO)Rahab like one who is slain;
You (BP)scattered Your enemies with [z]Your mighty arm.
11 The (BQ)heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours;
The (BR)world and [aa]all it contains, You have founded them.
12 The (BS)north and the south, You have created them;
(BT)Tabor and (BU)Hermon (BV)shout for joy at Your name.
13 You have [ab]a strong arm;
Your hand is mighty, Your (BW)right hand is exalted.
14 (BX)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
(BY)Lovingkindness and [ac]truth go before You.
15 How blessed are the people who know the [ad](BZ)joyful sound!
O Lord, they walk in the (CA)light of Your countenance.
16 In (CB)Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the glory of (CC)their strength,
And by Your favor [ae]our (CD)horn is exalted.
18 For our (CE)shield belongs to the Lord,
[af]And our king to the (CF)Holy One of Israel.
19 [ag]Once You spoke in vision to Your godly [ah]ones,
And said, “I have [ai]given help to one who is (CG)mighty;
I have exalted one (CH)chosen from the people.
20 “I have (CI)found David My servant;
With My holy (CJ)oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom (CK)My hand will be established;
My arm also will (CL)strengthen him.
22 “The enemy will not [aj]deceive him,
Nor the [ak](CM)son of wickedness afflict him.
23 “But I shall (CN)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 “My (CO)faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him,
And in My name his (CP)horn will be exalted.
25 “I shall also set his hand (CQ)on the sea
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 “He will cry to Me, ‘You are (CR)my Father,
My God, and the (CS)rock of my salvation.’
27 “I also shall make him My (CT)firstborn,
The (CU)highest of the kings of the earth.
28 “My (CV)lovingkindness I will keep for him forever,
And My (CW)covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 “So I will establish his [al](CX)descendants forever
And his (CY)throne (CZ)as the days of heaven.
30 “If his sons (DA)forsake My law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they [am]violate My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their transgression with the (DB)rod
And their iniquity with stripes.
33 “But I will not break off (DC)My lovingkindness from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 “My (DD)covenant I will not [an]violate,
Nor will I (DE)alter [ao]the utterance of My lips.
35 “[ap]Once I have (DF)sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 “His [aq](DG)descendants shall endure forever
And his (DH)throne (DI)as the sun before Me.
37 “It shall be established forever (DJ)like the moon,
And the (DK)witness in the sky is faithful.” [ar]Selah.
38 But You have (DL)cast off and (DM)rejected,
You have been full of wrath [as]against Your (DN)anointed.
39 You have (DO)spurned the covenant of Your servant;
You have (DP)profaned (DQ)his crown [at]in the dust.
40 You have (DR)broken down all his walls;
You have (DS)brought his strongholds to ruin.
41 (DT)All who pass along the way plunder him;
He has become a (DU)reproach to his neighbors.
42 You have (DV)exalted the right hand of his adversaries;
You have (DW)made all his enemies rejoice.
43 You also turn back the edge of his sword
And have (DX)not made him stand in battle.
44 You have made his [au](DY)splendor to cease
And cast his throne to the ground.
45 You have (DZ)shortened the days of his youth;
You have (EA)covered him with shame. Selah.
46 (EB)How long, O Lord?
Will You hide Yourself forever?
Will Your (EC)wrath burn like fire?
47 (ED)Remember [av]what my span of life is;
For what (EE)vanity [aw]You have created all the sons of men!
48 What man can live and not (EF)see death?
Can he (EG)deliver his soul from the [ax]power of [ay]Sheol? Selah.
49 Where are Your former lovingkindnesses, O Lord,
Which You (EH)swore to David in Your faithfulness?
50 Remember, O Lord, the (EI)reproach of Your servants;
[az]How I bear in my bosom the reproach of all the many peoples,
51 With which (EJ)Your enemies have reproached, O Lord,
With which they have reproached the footsteps of (EK)Your anointed.
52 (EL)Blessed be the Lord forever!
Amen and Amen.

Man of Lawlessness
2 Now we request you, (A)brethren, with regard to the [a](B)coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our (C)gathering together to Him, 2 that you not be quickly shaken from your [b]composure or be disturbed either by a (D)spirit or a [c](E)message or a (F)letter as if from us, to the effect that (G)the day of the Lord (H)has come. 3 (I)Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the [d](J)apostasy comes first, and the (K)man of lawlessness is revealed, the (L)son of destruction, 4 who opposes and exalts himself above [e](M)every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, (N)displaying himself as being God. 5 Do you not remember that (O)while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? 6 And you know (P)what restrains him now, so that in his time he will be revealed. 7 For (Q)the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only (R)he who now restrains will do so until he is taken out of the way. 8 Then that lawless one (S)will be revealed whom the Lord will slay (T)with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the (U)appearance of His [f]coming; 9 that is, the one whose [g]coming is in accord with the activity of (V)Satan, with all power and [h](W)signs and false wonders, 10 and with [i]all the deception of wickedness for (X)those who perish, because they did not receive the love of (Y)the truth so as to be saved. 11 For this reason (Z)God [j]will send upon them [k]a (AA)deluding influence so that they will believe [l]what is false, 12 in order that they all may be [m]judged who (AB)did not believe the truth, but [n](AC)took pleasure in wickedness.
13 (AD)But we should always give thanks to God for you, (AE)brethren beloved by the Lord, because (AF)God has chosen you [o]from the beginning (AG)for salvation [p](AH)through sanctification [q]by the Spirit and faith in the truth. 14 It was for this He (AI)called you through (AJ)our gospel, [r]that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. 15 So then, brethren, (AK)stand firm and (AL)hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether (AM)by word of mouth or (AN)by letter [s]from us.
16 (AO)Now may our Lord Jesus Christ (AP)Himself and God our Father, who has (AQ)loved us and given us eternal comfort and (AR)good hope by grace, 17 (AS)comfort and (AT)strengthen your hearts in every good work and word.
