⁵ He established ^(I)a testimony in ^(J)Jacob
    and appointed a law in ^(K)Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
⁶ that ^(L)the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
⁷     so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget ^(M)the works of God,
    but ^(N)keep his commandments;
⁸ and that they should not be ^(O)like their fathers,
    ^(P)a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation ^(Q)whose heart was not steadfast,
    whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁹ The Ephraimites, armed with^[b] the bow,
    ^(R)turned back on the day of battle.
¹⁰ They ^(S)did not keep God's covenant,
    but refused to walk according to his law.
¹¹ They ^(T)forgot his works
    and ^(U)the wonders that he had shown them.
¹² In the sight of their fathers ^(V)he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in ^(W)the fields of Zoan.
¹³ He ^(X)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters ^(Y)stand like a heap.
^14 (Z)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
¹⁵ He ^(AA)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
¹⁶ He made streams come out of ^(AB)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

¹⁷ Yet they sinned still more against him,
    ^(AC)rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
¹⁸ They ^(AD)tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
¹⁹ They spoke against God, saying,
    ^(AE)“Can God ^(AF)spread a table in the wilderness?
^20 (AG)He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”

²¹ Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    ^(AH)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
²² because they ^(AI)did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
²³ Yet he commanded the skies above
    and ^(AJ)opened the doors of heaven,
²⁴ and he ^(AK)rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them ^(AL)the grain of heaven.
²⁵ Man ate of the bread of ^(AM)the angels;
    he sent them food ^(AN)in abundance.
²⁶ He ^(AO)caused the east wind to blow in the heavens,
    and by his power he led out the south wind;
²⁷ he rained meat on them like ^(AP)dust,
    winged birds like ^(AQ)the sand of the seas;
²⁸ he ^(AR)let them fall in the midst of their camp,
    all around their dwellings.
²⁹ And they ^(AS)ate and were well filled,
    for he gave them what they ^(AT)craved.
³⁰ But before they had satisfied their craving,
    ^(AU)while the food was still in their mouths,
³¹ the anger of God rose against them,
    and he killed ^(AV)the strongest of them
    and laid low ^(AW)the young men of Israel.

³² In spite of all this, they ^(AX)still sinned;
    ^(AY)despite his wonders, they did not believe.
³³ So he made ^(AZ)their days ^(BA)vanish like^[c] a breath,^[d]
    and their years in terror.
³⁴ When he killed them, they ^(BB)sought him;
    they repented and sought God earnestly.
³⁵ They remembered that God was their ^(BC)rock,
    the Most High God their ^(BD)redeemer.
³⁶ But they ^(BE)flattered him with their mouths;
    they ^(BF)lied to him with their tongues.
³⁷ Their ^(BG)heart was not ^(BH)steadfast toward him;
    they were not faithful to his covenant.
³⁸ Yet he, being ^(BI)compassionate,
    ^(BJ)atoned for their iniquity
    and did not destroy them;
he restrained his anger often
    and did not stir up all his wrath.
³⁹ He ^(BK)remembered that they were but ^(BL)flesh,
    ^(BM)a wind that passes and comes not again.
⁴⁰ How often they ^(BN)rebelled against him in the wilderness
    and ^(BO)grieved him in ^(BP)the desert!
⁴¹ They ^(BQ)tested God again and again
    and provoked ^(BR)the Holy One of Israel.
⁴² They ^(BS)did not remember his power^[e]
    or the day when he redeemed them from the foe,
^43 (BT)when he performed his ^(BU)signs in Egypt
    and his ^(BV)marvels in ^(BW)the fields of Zoan.
⁴⁴ He ^(BX)turned their rivers to blood,
    so that they could not drink of their streams.
⁴⁵ He sent among them swarms of ^(BY)flies, which devoured them,
    and ^(BZ)frogs, which destroyed them.
⁴⁶ He gave their crops to ^(CA)the destroying locust
    and the fruit of their labor to the locust.
⁴⁷ He destroyed their vines with ^(CB)hail
    and their sycamores with frost.
⁴⁸ He gave over their ^(CC)cattle to the hail
    and their flocks to thunderbolts.
⁴⁹ He let loose on them his burning anger,
    wrath, indignation, and distress,
    a company of ^(CD)destroying angels.
⁵⁰ He made a path for his anger;
    he did not spare them from death,
    but gave their lives over to the plague.
⁵¹ He struck down every ^(CE)firstborn in Egypt,
    the firstfruits of their strength in the tents of ^(CF)Ham.
⁵² Then he led out his people ^(CG)like sheep
    and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.
^53 (CH)He led them in safety, so that they ^(CI)were not afraid,
    but ^(CJ)the sea overwhelmed their enemies.
⁵⁴ And he brought them to his ^(CK)holy land,
    ^(CL)to the mountain which his right hand had ^(CM)won.
⁵⁵ He ^(CN)drove out nations before them;
    he ^(CO)apportioned them for a possession
    and settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.

⁵⁶ Yet they ^(CP)tested and ^(CQ)rebelled against the Most High God
    and did not keep his testimonies,
⁵⁷ but turned away and acted treacherously like their fathers;
    they twisted like ^(CR)a deceitful bow.
⁵⁸ For they ^(CS)provoked him to anger with their ^(CT)high places;
    they ^(CU)moved him to jealousy with their ^(CV)idols.
⁵⁹ When God heard, he was full of ^(CW)wrath,
    and he utterly rejected Israel.
⁶⁰ He ^(CX)forsook his dwelling at ^(CY)Shiloh,
    the tent where he dwelt among mankind,
⁶¹ and delivered his ^(CZ)power to captivity,
    his ^(DA)glory to the hand of the foe.
⁶² He ^(DB)gave his people over to the sword
    and ^(DC)vented his wrath on his heritage.
^63 (DD)Fire devoured their young men,
    and their young women had no ^(DE)marriage song.
⁶⁴ Their ^(DF)priests fell by the sword,
    and their ^(DG)widows made no lamentation.
⁶⁵ Then the Lord ^(DH)awoke as from sleep,
    like a strong man shouting because of wine.
⁶⁶ And he ^(DI)put his adversaries to rout;
    he put them to everlasting shame.

⁶⁷ He rejected the tent of ^(DJ)Joseph;
    he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim,
⁶⁸ but he chose the tribe of Judah,
    Mount Zion, which he ^(DK)loves.
⁶⁹ He ^(DL)built his sanctuary like the high heavens,
    like the earth, which he has founded forever.
⁷⁰ He ^(DM)chose David his servant
    and took him from the sheepfolds;
⁷¹ from ^(DN)following the nursing ewes he brought him
    to ^(DO)shepherd Jacob his people,
    Israel his ^(DP)inheritance.
⁷² With ^(DQ)upright heart he shepherded them
    and ^(DR)guided them with his skillful hand.

⁷ He is the Lord our God;
    his ^(K)judgments are in all the earth.
⁸ He ^(L)remembers his covenant forever,
    the word that he commanded, for ^(M)a thousand generations,
^9 (N)the covenant that he made with Abraham,
    his ^(O)sworn promise to Isaac,
¹⁰ which he confirmed to ^(P)Jacob as a statute,
    to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
¹¹ saying, ^(Q)“To you I will give the land of Canaan
    as ^(R)your portion for an inheritance.”

¹² When they were ^(S)few in number,
    of little account, and ^(T)sojourners in it,
¹³ wandering from nation to nation,
    from one kingdom to another people,
¹⁴ he ^(U)allowed no one to oppress them;
    he ^(V)rebuked kings on their account,
¹⁵ saying, ^(W)“Touch not my anointed ones,
    do my prophets no harm!”

¹⁶ When he ^(X)summoned a famine on the land
    and ^(Y)broke all supply^[a] of bread,
¹⁷ he had ^(Z)sent a man ahead of them,
    Joseph, who was ^(AA)sold as a slave.
¹⁸ His ^(AB)feet were hurt with fetters;
    his neck was put in a collar of iron;
¹⁹ until ^(AC)what he had said came to pass,
    the word of the Lord ^(AD)tested him.
^20 (AE)The king sent and ^(AF)released him;
    the ruler of the peoples set him free;
²¹ he ^(AG)made him lord of his house
    and ruler of all his possessions,
²² to bind^[b] his princes at his pleasure
    and to teach his elders wisdom.

²³ Then ^(AH)Israel came to Egypt;
    Jacob ^(AI)sojourned in ^(AJ)the land of Ham.
²⁴ And the Lord ^(AK)made his people very fruitful
    and made them stronger than their foes.
²⁵ He ^(AL)turned their hearts to hate his people,
    to ^(AM)deal craftily with his servants.

²⁶ He ^(AN)sent Moses, his servant,
    and Aaron, ^(AO)whom he had chosen.
^27 (AP)They performed his signs among them
    and miracles in ^(AQ)the land of Ham.
²⁸ He ^(AR)sent darkness, and made the land dark;
    they ^(AS)did not rebel^[c] against his words.
²⁹ He turned their waters into blood
    and ^(AT)caused their fish to die.
³⁰ Their land swarmed with frogs,
    even in ^(AU)the chambers of their kings.
³¹ He spoke, and there came ^(AV)swarms of flies,
    ^(AW)and gnats throughout their country.
³² He gave them hail for rain,
    and fiery ^(AX)lightning bolts through their land.
³³ He struck down their vines and fig trees,
    and ^(AY)shattered the trees of their country.
³⁴ He spoke, and the ^(AZ)locusts came,
    young locusts without number,
³⁵ which devoured all the vegetation in their land
    and ate up the fruit of their ground.
³⁶ He ^(BA)struck down all the firstborn in their land,
    ^(BB)the firstfruits of all their strength.

³⁷ Then he brought out Israel with ^(BC)silver and gold,
    and there was none among his tribes who stumbled.
^38 (BD)Egypt was glad when they departed,
    for ^(BE)dread of them had fallen upon it.

³⁹ He ^(BF)spread a cloud for a covering,
    and fire to give light by night.
^40 (BG)They asked, and he ^(BH)brought quail,
    and gave them ^(BI)bread from heaven in abundance.
⁴¹ He opened the rock, and ^(BJ)water gushed out;
    it flowed through ^(BK)the desert like a river.
⁴² For he ^(BL)remembered his holy promise,
    and ^(BM)Abraham, his servant.

⁴³ So he brought his people out with joy,
    his ^(BN)chosen ones with ^(BO)singing.
⁴⁴ And he ^(BP)gave them the lands of the nations,
    and they took possession of the fruit of the peoples' toil,
⁴⁵ that they might ^(BQ)keep his statutes
    and ^(BR)observe his laws.
^(BS)Praise the Lord!

^4 (F)Remember me, O Lord, when you show favor to your people;
    help me when you save them,^[a]
5 that I may look upon the prosperity of your ^(G)chosen ones,
    that I may rejoice in the gladness of your nation,
    that I may glory with your inheritance.

^6 (H)Both we and ^(I)our fathers have sinned;
    we have committed iniquity; we have done wickedness.
⁷ Our fathers, when they were in Egypt,
    did not consider your wondrous works;
they ^(J)did not remember the abundance of your steadfast love,
    but ^(K)rebelled by the sea, at the Red Sea.
⁸ Yet he saved them ^(L)for his name's sake,
    ^(M)that he might make known his mighty power.
⁹ He ^(N)rebuked the Red Sea, and it ^(O)became dry,
    and he ^(P)led them through the deep as through a desert.
¹⁰ So he ^(Q)saved them from the hand of the foe
    and ^(R)redeemed them from the power of the enemy.
¹¹ And ^(S)the waters covered their adversaries;
    not one of them was left.
¹² Then ^(T)they believed his words;
    they ^(U)sang his praise.

¹³ But they soon ^(V)forgot his works;
    they did not wait for ^(W)his counsel.
¹⁴ But they had ^(X)a wanton craving in the wilderness,
    and ^(Y)put God to the test in the desert;
¹⁵ he ^(Z)gave them what they asked,
    but sent ^(AA)a wasting disease among them.

¹⁶ When men in the camp ^(AB)were jealous of Moses
    and Aaron, ^(AC)the holy one of the Lord,
^17 (AD)the earth opened and swallowed up Dathan,
    and covered the company of Abiram.
^18 (AE)Fire also broke out in their company;
    the flame burned up the wicked.

¹⁹ They ^(AF)made a calf in Horeb
    and worshiped a metal image.
²⁰ They ^(AG)exchanged the glory of God^[b]
    for the image of an ox that eats grass.
²¹ They ^(AH)forgot God, their Savior,
    who had done great things in Egypt,
²² wondrous works in ^(AI)the land of Ham,
    and awesome deeds by the Red Sea.
²³ Therefore ^(AJ)he said he would destroy them—
    had not Moses, his ^(AK)chosen one,
^(AL)stood in the breach before him,
    to turn away his wrath from destroying them.

²⁴ Then they ^(AM)despised ^(AN)the pleasant land,
    having ^(AO)no faith in his promise.
²⁵ They ^(AP)murmured in their tents,
    and did not obey the voice of the Lord.
²⁶ Therefore he ^(AQ)raised his hand and swore to them
    that he would make them fall in the wilderness,
²⁷ and would make their offspring fall among the nations,
    ^(AR)scattering them among the lands.

²⁸ Then they ^(AS)yoked themselves to the ^(AT)Baal of Peor,
    and ate sacrifices offered to ^(AU)the dead;
²⁹ they provoked the Lord to anger with their deeds,
    and a plague broke out among them.
³⁰ Then ^(AV)Phinehas stood up and intervened,
    and the plague was stayed.
³¹ And that was ^(AW)counted to him as righteousness
    from generation to generation forever.

³² They ^(AX)angered him at the waters of Meribah,
    and it went ill with Moses on their account,
³³ for they ^(AY)made his spirit bitter,^[c]
    and he ^(AZ)spoke rashly with his lips.

³⁴ They did not ^(BA)destroy the peoples,
    ^(BB)as the Lord commanded them,
³⁵ but they ^(BC)mixed with the nations
    and learned to do as they did.
³⁶ They served their idols,
    which became ^(BD)a snare to them.
³⁷ They ^(BE)sacrificed their sons
    and their daughters to ^(BF)the demons;
³⁸ they poured out innocent blood,
    the blood of their sons and daughters,
whom they sacrificed to the idols of Canaan,
    and the land was ^(BG)polluted with blood.
³⁹ Thus they ^(BH)became unclean by their acts,
    and ^(BI)played the whore in their deeds.

⁴⁰ Then ^(BJ)the anger of the Lord was kindled against ^(BK)his people,
    and he abhorred his ^(BL)heritage;
⁴¹ he ^(BM)gave them into the hand of the nations,
    so that those who hated them ruled over them.
⁴² Their enemies ^(BN)oppressed them,
    and they were brought into subjection under their power.
^43 (BO)Many times he delivered them,
    but they were rebellious in their ^(BP)purposes
    and were ^(BQ)brought low through their iniquity.

⁴⁴ Nevertheless, he looked upon their distress,
    when he ^(BR)heard their cry.
⁴⁵ For their sake he ^(BS)remembered his covenant,
    and ^(BT)relented according to ^(BU)the abundance of his steadfast love.
⁴⁶ He caused them to be ^(BV)pitied
    by all those who held them captive.

^47 (BW)Save us, O Lord our God,
    and ^(BX)gather us from among the nations,
that we may give thanks to your holy name
    and glory in your praise.

^48 (BY)Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
    from everlasting to everlasting!
^(BZ)And let all the people say, “Amen!”
    ^(CA)Praise the Lord!
