Psalm 76:8-78:24

⁸From the heavens you uttered judgment;
^(A)the earth feared and was still,
⁹when God ^(B)arose to establish judgment,
to save all the humble of the earth. Selah

¹⁰Surely ^(C)the wrath of man shall praise you;
    the remnant^[a] of wrath you will put on like a belt.
¹¹^(D)Make your vows to the Lord your God and perform them;
    let all around him ^(E)bring gifts
    to him who ^(F)is to be feared,
¹²who ^(G)cuts off the spirit of princes,
    who ^(H)is to be feared by the kings of the earth.

In the Day of Trouble I Seek the Lord

77 I ^(K)cry aloud to God,
    aloud to God, and he will hear me.
²^(L)In the day of my trouble I seek the Lord;
    in ^(M)the night my ^(N)hand is stretched out without wearying;
    my soul ^(O)refuses to be comforted.
³When I remember God, I ^(P)moan;
    when I meditate, my spirit faints. Selah

⁴You hold my eyelids open;
    I am so ^(Q)troubled that I cannot speak.
⁵I consider ^(R)the days of old,
    the years long ago.
⁶I said,^[b] “Let me remember my ^(S)song in the night;
    let me ^(T)meditate in my heart.”
    Then my spirit made a diligent search:
⁷“Will the Lord ^(U)spurn forever,
    and never again ^(V)be favorable?
⁸Has his steadfast love forever ceased?
    Are his ^(W)promises at an end for all time?
⁹^(X)Has God forgotten to be gracious?
    ^(Y)Has he in anger shut up his compassion?” Selah

¹⁰Then I said, “I will appeal to this,
to the years of the ^(Z)right hand of the Most High.”^[c]

¹¹I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will ^(AA)remember your wonders of old.
¹²I will ponder all your ^(AB)work,
    and meditate on your ^(AC)mighty deeds.
¹³Your way, O God, is ^(AD)holy.
    ^(AE)What god is great like our God?
¹⁴You are the God who ^(AF)works wonders;
    you have ^(AG)made known your might among the peoples.
¹⁵You ^(AH)with your arm redeemed your people,
    the children of Jacob and Joseph. Selah

¹⁶When ^(AI)the waters saw you, O God,
    when the waters saw you, they were afraid;
    indeed, the deep trembled.
¹⁷The clouds poured out water;
    the skies ^(AJ)gave forth thunder;
    your ^(AK)arrows flashed on every side.
¹⁸^(AL)The crash of your thunder was in the whirlwind;
    ^(AM)your lightnings lighted up the world;
    the earth ^(AN)trembled and shook.
¹⁹Your ^(AO)way was through the sea,
    your path through the great waters;
    yet your footprints ^(AP)were unseen.^[d]
²⁰You ^(AQ)led your people like a flock
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Tell the Coming Generation

78 ^(AS)Give ear, O my people, to my teaching;
    incline your ears to the words of my mouth!
²^(AT)I will open my mouth ^(AU)in a parable;
    I will utter dark sayings from of old,
³things that we have heard and known,
    that our ^(AV)fathers have told us.
⁴We will not ^(AW)hide them from their children,
    but ^(AX)tell to the coming generation
the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might,
    and ^(AY)the wonders that he has done.

⁵He established ^(AZ)a testimony in ^(BA)Jacob
    and appointed a law in ^(BB)Israel,
which he commanded our fathers
    to teach to their children,
⁶that ^(BC)the next generation might know them,
    the children yet unborn,
and arise and tell them to their children,
⁷    so that they should set their hope in God
and not forget ^(BD)the works of God,
    but ^(BE)keep his commandments;
⁸and that they should not be ^(BF)like their fathers,
    ^(BG)a stubborn and rebellious generation,
a generation ^(BH)whose heart was not steadfast,
    whose spirit was not faithful to God.

⁹The Ephraimites, armed with^[f] the bow,
    ^(BI)turned back on the day of battle.
¹⁰They ^(BJ)did not keep God's covenant,
    but refused to walk according to his law.
¹¹They ^(BK)forgot his works
    and ^(BL)the wonders that he had shown them.
¹²In the sight of their fathers ^(BM)he performed wonders
    in the land of Egypt, in ^(BN)the fields of Zoan.
¹³He ^(BO)divided the sea and let them pass through it,
    and made the waters ^(BP)stand like a heap.
¹⁴^(BQ)In the daytime he led them with a cloud,
    and all the night with a fiery light.
¹⁵He ^(BR)split rocks in the wilderness
    and gave them drink abundantly as from the deep.
¹⁶He made streams come out of ^(BS)the rock
    and caused waters to flow down like rivers.

¹⁷Yet they sinned still more against him,
    ^(BT)rebelling against the Most High in the desert.
¹⁸They ^(BU)tested God in their heart
    by demanding the food they craved.
¹⁹They spoke against God, saying,
    ^(BV)“Can God ^(BW)spread a table in the wilderness?
²⁰^(BX)He struck the rock so that water gushed out
    and streams overflowed.
Can he also give bread
    or provide meat for his people?”

²¹Therefore, when the Lord heard, he was full of wrath;
    ^(BY)a fire was kindled against Jacob;
    his anger rose against Israel,
²²because they ^(BZ)did not believe in God
    and did not trust his saving power.
²³Yet he commanded the skies above
    and ^(CA)opened the doors of heaven,
²⁴and he ^(CB)rained down on them manna to eat
    and gave them ^(CC)the grain of heaven.
