Psalm 58^[a]

¹Do you rulers indeed speak justly?^(A)
Do you judge people with equity?
²No, in your heart you devise injustice,^(B)
and your hands mete out violence on the earth.^(C)

³Even from birth the wicked go astray;
    from the womb they are wayward, spreading lies.
⁴Their venom is like the venom of a snake,^(D)
    like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,
⁵that will not heed^(E) the tune of the charmer,^(F)
    however skillful the enchanter may be.

⁶Break the teeth in their mouths, O God;^(G)
    Lord, tear out the fangs of those lions!^(H)
⁷Let them vanish like water that flows away;^(I)
    when they draw the bow, let their arrows fall short.^(J)
⁸May they be like a slug that melts away as it moves along,^(K)
    like a stillborn child^(L) that never sees the sun.

⁹Before your pots can feel the heat of the thorns^(M)—
    whether they be green or dry—the wicked will be swept away.^[c]^(N)
¹⁰The righteous will be glad^(O) when they are avenged,^(P)
    when they dip their feet in the blood of the wicked.^(Q)
¹¹Then people will say,
    “Surely the righteous still are rewarded;^(R)
    surely there is a God who judges the earth.”^(S)

¹Deliver me from my enemies, O God;^(U)
be my fortress against those who are attacking me.^(V)
²Deliver me from evildoers^(W)
and save me from those who are after my blood.^(X)

³See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire^(Y) against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
⁴I have done no wrong,^(Z) yet they are ready to attack me.^(AA)
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!^(AB)
⁵You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,^(AC)
rouse yourself^(AD) to punish all the nations;^(AE)
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.^[f]^(AF)

⁶They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,^(AG)
    and prowl about the city.
⁷See what they spew from their mouths^(AH)—
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,^(AI)
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”^(AJ)
⁸But you laugh at them, Lord;^(AK)
    you scoff at all those nations.^(AL)

⁹You are my strength,^(AM) I watch for you;
you, God, are my fortress,^(AN)
¹⁰ my God on whom I can rely.

God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
¹¹But do not kill them, Lord our shield,^[g]^(AO)
    or my people will forget.^(AP)
In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.^(AQ)
¹²For the sins of their mouths,^(AR)
    for the words of their lips,^(AS)
    let them be caught in their pride.^(AT)
For the curses and lies they utter,
¹³    consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.^(AU)
Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.^(AV)

¹⁴They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
¹⁵They wander about for food^(AW)
    and howl if not satisfied.
¹⁶But I will sing^(AX) of your strength,^(AY)
    in the morning^(AZ) I will sing of your love;^(BA)
for you are my fortress,^(BB)
    my refuge in times of trouble.^(BC)

¹⁷You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
you, God, are my fortress,
my God on whom I can rely.^(BD)

¹You have rejected us,^(BG) God, and burst upon us;
    you have been angry^(BH)—now restore us!^(BI)
²You have shaken the land^(BJ) and torn it open;
    mend its fractures,^(BK) for it is quaking.
³You have shown your people desperate times;^(BL)
    you have given us wine that makes us stagger.^(BM)
⁴But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner^(BN)
    to be unfurled against the bow.^[l]

⁵Save us and help us with your right hand,^(BO)
    that those you love^(BP) may be delivered.
⁶God has spoken from his sanctuary:
    “In triumph I will parcel out Shechem^(BQ)
    and measure off the Valley of Sukkoth.^(BR)
⁷Gilead^(BS) is mine, and Manasseh is mine;
    Ephraim^(BT) is my helmet,
    Judah^(BU) is my scepter.^(BV)
⁸Moab is my washbasin,
    on Edom I toss my sandal;
    over Philistia I shout in triumph.^(BW)”

⁹Who will bring me to the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
¹⁰Is it not you, God, you who have now rejected us
    and no longer go out with our armies?^(BX)
¹¹Give us aid against the enemy,
    for human help is worthless.^(BY)
¹²With God we will gain the victory,
    and he will trample down our enemies.^(BZ)

¹Hear my cry, O God;^(CA)
listen to my prayer.^(CB)

²From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;^(CC)
    lead me to the rock^(CD) that is higher than I.
³For you have been my refuge,^(CE)
    a strong tower against the foe.^(CF)

⁴I long to dwell^(CG) in your tent forever
and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.^[n]^(CH)
⁵For you, God, have heard my vows;^(CI)
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.^(CJ)

⁶Increase the days of the king’s life,^(CK)
his years for many generations.^(CL)
⁷May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;^(CM)
appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.^(CN)

⁸Then I will ever sing in praise of your name^(CO)
and fulfill my vows day after day.^(CP)

1 Paul, called to be an apostle^(A) of Christ Jesus by the will of God,^(B) and our brother Sosthenes,^(C)

²To the church of God^(D) in Corinth,^(E) to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called^(F) to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name^(G) of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours:

³Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.^(H)

Thanksgiving

⁴I always thank my God for you^(I) because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. ⁵For in him you have been enriched^(J) in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge^(K)— ⁶God thus confirming our testimony^(L) about Christ among you. ⁷Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift^(M) as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed.^(N) ⁸He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless^(O) on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.^(P) ⁹God is faithful,^(Q) who has called you^(R) into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.^(S)

A Church Divided Over Leaders

¹⁰I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,^[a]^(T) in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you,^(U) but that you be perfectly united^(V) in mind and thought. ¹¹My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe’s household^(W) have informed me that there are quarrels among you. ¹²What I mean is this: One of you says, “I follow Paul”;^(X) another, “I follow Apollos”;^(Y) another, “I follow Cephas^[b]”;^(Z) still another, “I follow Christ.”

¹³Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?^(AA) ¹⁴I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus^(AB) and Gaius,^(AC) ¹⁵so no one can say that you were baptized in my name. ¹⁶(Yes, I also baptized the household^(AD) of Stephanas;^(AE) beyond that, I don’t remember if I baptized anyone else.) ¹⁷For Christ did not send me to baptize,^(AF) but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom^(AG) and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ Crucified Is God’s Power and Wisdom

¹⁸For the message of the cross is foolishness^(AH) to those who are perishing,^(AI) but to us who are being saved^(AJ) it is the power of God.^(AK) ¹⁹For it is written:

“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”^[c]^(AL)

²⁰Where is the wise person?^(AM) Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age?^(AN) Has not God made foolish^(AO) the wisdom of the world? ²¹For since in the wisdom of God the world^(AP) through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save^(AQ) those who believe.^(AR) ²²Jews demand signs^(AS) and Greeks look for wisdom, ²³but we preach Christ crucified:^(AT) a stumbling block^(AU) to Jews and foolishness^(AV) to Gentiles, ²⁴but to those whom God has called,^(AW) both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God^(AX) and the wisdom of God.^(AY) ²⁵For the foolishness^(AZ) of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness^(BA) of God is stronger than human strength.

²⁶Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called.^(BB) Not many of you were wise^(BC) by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. ²⁷But God chose^(BD) the foolish^(BE) things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. ²⁸God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things—and the things that are not^(BF)—to nullify the things that are, ²⁹so that no one may boast before him.^(BG) ³⁰It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,^(BH) who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness,^(BI) holiness^(BJ) and redemption.^(BK) ³¹Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.”^[d]^(BL)
