Psalm 51-57New International Version (NIV)
For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
1 Have mercy on me, O God,
3 For I know my transgressions,
7 Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
For the director of music. A maskil[d] of David. When Doeg the Edomite had gone to Saul and told him: “David has gone to the house of Ahimelek.”
1 Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero?
5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin:
8 But I am like an olive tree
1 The fool says in his heart,
2 God looks down from heaven
4 Do all these evildoers know nothing?
They devour my people as though eating bread;
6 Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil[j] of David. When the Ziphites had gone to Saul and said, “Is not David hiding among us?”
1 Save me, O God, by your name;
3 Arrogant foes are attacking me;
4 Surely God is my help;
5 Let evil recoil on those who slander me;
6 I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you;
For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A maskil[m] of David.
1 Listen to my prayer, O God,
4 My heart is in anguish within me;
9 Lord, confuse the wicked, confound their words,
12 If an enemy were insulting me,
15 Let death take my enemies by surprise;
16 As for me, I call to God,
20 My companion attacks his friends;
22 Cast your cares on the Lord
But as for me, I trust in you.
For the director of music. To the tune of “A Dove on Distant Oaks.” Of David. A miktam.[p] When the Philistines had seized him in Gath.
1 Be merciful to me, my God,
3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.
5 All day long they twist my words;
8 Record my misery;
10 In God, whose word I praise,
12 I am under vows to you, my God;
For the director of music. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” Of David. A miktam.[t] When he had fled from Saul into the cave.
1 Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me,
2 I cry out to God Most High,
4 I am in the midst of lions;
5 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
6 They spread a net for my feet—
7 My heart, O God, is steadfast,
9 I will praise you, Lord, among the nations;
11 Be exalted, O God, above the heavens;
